The content Path of Exile offers is massive. You have 7 “classes”, each can be leveled up to 100, which takes weeks/months of time to reach but that usually isn’t a goal. You also can play every character several times with different builds and those builds will have unique playstyles. A Ranger for example doesn’t have to use a bow, you can do whatever you want with each class. There are tons and tons of skill-gems, materials and other drops that will suck you into the addiction of finding better loot.

The Path of Exile team is always changing the game. A league(season) will last around 3 months and will feature new mechanics, which might get implemented into the core game. Most new mechanics, that have been implemented in a league, stay in the game to expand the things you encounter. Right now, the Game offers 10 acts, split into two halves, while the second half revisits a lot of the older areas, while also changing a lot and offering some new boss fights.

The real game begins right here, after you complete all of the 10 acts. You will work on completing your Atlas which contains 157 maps. Each map is different and 2 of the end-game bosses are constantly fighting over influence across the Atlas. You can take a side and fight the other one to get more and better loot in the end. There are a lot of end-game bosses which will test your character and you will probably have to make some adjustments to your build. The game doesn’t force you to do any of it. If you don’t want to fight bosses or try your luck in the harder maps, you won’t have to.

The community is also a big part of the game. There are tons of videos and guides out there which will help you a lot. The people in chat are usually also really nice and helpful.
There are also a lot of very handy tools like “poe.trade macro” which will show you the current price of an item.

The game technically is completely free 2 play. But I would say that you have to pay at least 5€ for a premium stash tab that will let you sell things a lot easier by setting a price to an item. The other options is selling stuff over the forums/chat.

TL;DR:
The game Diablo 3 should’ve been.
