Hadith (Sunan Abi Dawood 4403, Sunan At-Tirmidhi 1423)
"The Pen has been lifted from three: the sleeping person until he wakes, the child until he reaches maturity, and the insane person until he regains sanity."

This Hadith clarifies that a person who is mentally insane is not held accountable in the same way as a sane individual.
