If I had to describe Warframe in five words it would be, “Crafty Ninja Space Shooter Looter”. Initially, I disliked the game, thinking it was a PVP arena game when it first released. Sadly, I missed out on the first five years of its life due to this misconception. I finally tried playing the game again when it was released for the Nintendo Switch and was immediately hooked, I ended up playing it for over 80 hours before I gave it a try on PC. As of writing this review, Warframe has become one of my most played PC games with over 200 hours and counting. Unfortunately, Warframe doesn’t seem to show its true face for many players before they inevitably quit from the lack of guidance.

Warframe is unlike any other game of its genre, the game starts off easy but as you progress the layers start to peel away revealing more and more complexity. What starts as a ninja space shooter quickly becomes a space flight shooter, then a space ship simulator and as of the most recent update a mech building shooter, all of which is centered around a resource grinding/crafting loop. Digital Extremes has done a fine job with their Free-to-Play system, while players can buy warframes, weapons, and other items with Platinum, the premium currency, almost everything in the game can be crafted. Players have even found a market for trading in-game items to other players for Platinum.

In the game, players play as the Tenno, a long-forgotten race that use Warframes to fight the three enemy factions: the Corpus, the Grineer, and the Infested. As you progress through the story quests you learn more and more about the Origin System and its inhabitants. Players unlock new quests by performing tasks and meeting requirements. Some of the questlines are as small as a string of fetch quests and some are more elaborate with the player having to solve riddles to find clues. One of the biggest story twists in my entire gaming history happened around the 70-hour mark when I finished the Second Dream questline. The current update, Heart of Deimos is centered around the Entrati family and the corruption that is plaguing their planet of Deimos. It has its own story and features new companions, nechramechs, and other new game mechanics.

Final Verdict: Warframe is a great Free-to-Play looter shooter and has a great community surrounding it. The developers listen to the players and work to continue to make it better and better. Even at 260 hours, I am still finding new things in the game that I didn’t know existed. I recommend it to anyone interested and hope that they will be patient enough to fully wrap their head around what Warframe delivers.
