Game looks alright until you hone in on details, lots of smeary artifacting going on always looks like there's some sort of upscaling and temporal sampling going on meaning you're ending up with ghosting.

To be honest, just also runs a bit ♥♥♥♥ for how it looks, gameplay is mostly how you'd remember but the performance and some aspects of the visuals, once you look past the nostalgia, just isn't up to par at all.

Highly bogged.

If you like (the) Gnorp Apalogue, then this is similar.

Game has Engagement Optimized Matchmaking, in other words the matchmaking is rigged to maximise engagement, you'll get Plat players standing still shooting walls, whilst Bronze players destroy.

Just google OptMatch AI Netease, you purposefully get massive loss streaks followed by massive win streaks all the time.

Game crashes using a 9800X3D and 7900XTX roughly every 45 minutes and only ever during cutscenes. Unacceptable 3 years after launch to have these sorts of issues.

Early Access Review
Half Life + Subnautica with co-op, graphics are good with a low-fi style mixed with modern tech like raytracing, map design is great, performance is mostly decent with some stutters, gameplay is great with some RPG elements like levelling skills and progression is satisfying.

This is probably a 6/10, being slightly above average

Story

The story and premise is interesting, generally it's pretty good in that regard up until the final few hours where it feels like there was at least 2-3 hours of missing content as the characters all of a sudden start acting weird around each other coming up to the end of the game with no context.

Presentation and Technical

Graphically the game looks really good, there's a few lighting glitches here and there but overall it is a pretty game. Character models are detailed and textures are generally high resolution and don't stick out like a sore-thumb. The theme is kept consistent with cars, characters and locations fitting the time period the game is set in.

Performance is fine maxed at 1440p on a 7900xtx and 9800X3D, however this is a top-of-the-line machine, can't comment on performance on a mid-range rig.

The default control scheme for the game is pretty bad, there's many keys which really don't make sense at all. Cars tend to control fine throughout the game for the most part.

Bugs were not that common but when they appeared they could be pretty immersion breaking, lots of AI bugging out. The main thing which I would consider a bug is a specific mission in the game.

I was playing the game on the Hard difficulty until hitting a chapter where you have to win a race. This mission was so insanely difficult that I think it isn't possible to complete without abusing a mechanic in the game. The AI all have faster cars which handle WAY better than your car, the car you are given starts to under-steer and slow down at every single corner. The 'fix' is to abuse the ram mechanic in the game which weirdly gives your car extra traction and makes it turn sharper and go faster. This is definitely not intended but is the only way people are beating the race on Hard difficulty. It's baffling that this wasn't caught in play testing and still to this day has not been patched.

Sound

One of the highlights of the game is definitely the sound design, especially the soundtrack which fits perfectly and makes the game so immersive, it's not quite Fallout Radio soundtrack, but it's getting up there. The voice acting is actually really good, the main cast is great and felt believable.

Good art and music, terrible combat design, some good tactility to parrying but all goes out the window when the game often makes parrying useless by throwing 3 or more enemies at you at the same time which attack at different times. Parrying in these cases just gets you killed. When you get knocked down there are no i-frames so the enemies will just wail on you and kill you. Progression isn't satisfying, I'm constantly feeling lost and if I should be here when I start to run into mobs that deal half my health in one hit and have ridiculous 7 hit combos whilst I deal 5%.

It's everything people complained about with Dark Souls 2 turned up to 11 (minus the world making no sense). I don't see why random mobs in this game have bigger combos, hits and are faster than the final boss from the Elden Ring DLC.
