Overall: Worth every filthy lucre if you like old school tactical RPG's like Ogre Battle.

Graphics: Combat scenes are wonderful and stylized. Overworld is serviceable. The cutscene sprites and portraits clash more than a bit with the combat and overworld art, and feel like they are from different games entirely.

Gameplay: Their squad based combat rewards close attention to squad composition as well as enemy movement range and capabilities. It is a little biased in favor of baiting the enemy into allowing you the first attack as a tier 0 strategy though, since mid game onwards a properly built squad can delete most of a defending squad before they can even fight back.

Writing: Unfortunately, like many homages to JRPG's and actual JRPG's, sometimes less is more. I found myself leaning on the skip button very quickly.

Gave it a spin and so far seems pretty decent.

Few points of critique:

1) No first person FOV option. Even with a narrower FOV than 3rd person, this would be nice to have.
2) No crosshair on the Magnum except in ADS mode.
3) 3rd person mode camera is heavily offcenter; mildly disorienting. Makes aiming with the magnum outside of ADS a little difficult/punishing compared to the pulse rifle or shotty.
4) No choice of camera offset in non ADS mode, which is odd given we have a button for swapping that in ADS mode. Let us swap it in non ADS mode too!
5) Bots somewhat OK at killing, main issue with them is they juke around too much and strafe in front of you a lot which is distracting. Plus as far as I can tell they don't have a class loadout. Just guns and some grenades. So they are more like mobile turrets you can bring if you are down a few people. Way better than the B4B bots though. But that's not saying much.

Also, you'll have to raise the default sensitivity in both regular and ADS mode unless you like needing to use half your desk to aim.
I had ammo issues at one point on the Technician, but that may be my fault as I was not heavily leaning on the autoturret as much as I probably should.

Got as far as getting ready to do the tutorial after character creation. Discovered that this game does not have full keymapping and I cannot remap movement to the arrow keys. Uninstall.

The mechanics are good, and if this game as meant to be a testbed for possible design variations in an actual X-COM 3, then that part is a success. Combat was streamlined, and manipulating enemy and ally turn order was definitely well done.

But the character audio, writing and aesthetics? God awful. Too peppy/rah-rah koombayah. Did not fit the setting and lore, especially since in that lore less than even a whole decade had passed since the events of X-COM 2.

After being gone for a while, made a new account to try out the changes- here is an edited transcript of how it went:

[7:28:41 PM] xxxxxx: sweet you can pick your starting weapon now
[7:28:55 PM] xxxxxx: going with the bo instead of the skana
[7:38:07 PM] xxxxxx: ugh forgot how godamn atrocious the mouse and keyboard control scheme was
[7:50:01 PM] xxxxxx: this is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cancer
[7:50:55 PM] xxxxxx: ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ overly complicated ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that does not allow me to simplify it because I don't have 16 double jointed GODAMN FINGER asonj:fhas:acna:sMNJd
e"qw\
[7:51:31 PM] xxxxxx: NEED A GAME WHOSE IDEA OF A CONTROL SCHEME ISNT ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

Alt + F4

DE, please let us map contextual controls - some of us just want to be able to do something simple like use the same button for attacking no matter which weapon we have out. Why for you force this cancer on us? The current state of the control scheme should be on a stone tablet on top a desert mountain under the section titled "Thou shalt not..." right next to a burning bush.

I can't melee attack and use a gun at same instant, but I have to manually swap between them and also have them on separate ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ buttons?

I cant just map MB1 to "attack with current weapon" and MB2 to "alternate weapon action for current weapon"?

No, that would be simple, and logical, and save me medical bills from carpal tunnel.

CAN'T ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ DO THAT!

This game is damn good. Probably helps that it did not come from a AAA mega corp infected dev studio. The UI is slick, performs well, and gameplay aesthetics and elements are very well done. The entire thing just screams polish and actual pride in their work rather than just cranking out game iteration xxxx for a quick buck. Only isse I've had so far is the occasional crash, but the other 99% of the time it runs great.

They've been setting a good track record with releases so far, I hope to see them continue it.
