Early Access Review
No Rest for the Wicked has a lot going for it! Incredible visuals that bring the story telling to life, smooth stamina based combat, & a worth while world to explore. But I had no idea it was also part V Rising (to use another contemporary game with similar mechanics. It is so weird to gather "Tier 1" resources during the tutorial (while not being able to use most of it), get access to the main town, get tantalized with the next plot point + immediate access to the second zone & "Tier 2" resources, but feel I'm chained to the "Tier 1" zone because the Tier 1 resources needed to update the first tier of town buildings only exist there; I can't work towards plot progress and base progression at the same time - being offered both at once produces a unsatisfying dissonance for me.

This says nothing of having to wait over an hour for a building project to be "completed." Why does this exist? The only reason I can think of of there MTX to go faster but there are no such purchases so what benefit to the player is there? Along with the durability system - what does it add to the game? I'm someone who doesn't mind durability systems. When done right they can provided a sense of urgency and extra layer of resource management but in No Rest it's just a countdown to inconvenience.

I feel like I'm being overly negative here, but I only feel the need to speak this much at length because I feel really do like most of what is in No Rest - it's just these aspects hold it back for me because I see systems in conflict with each other and the presence of things that I instead of giving the player creative agency just act as inconveniences. At its base is an extremely detailed world that is satisfying to explore with engaging combat that feels like every frame of animation was made with true artistic passion. For that along I'll say if you enjoy combat game give this one a go - it feels great and I have confidence if left to cook Moon Studious will release something truly epic!
