Early Access Review
Less "Pokemon with Guns" and more "Ark that runs better and doesn't take up a third of your hard drive"

The only downside so far is dedicated servers (the 32 player ones) are basically unplayable with lag.

Hot take here -- I prefer this over Borderlands 2, minus the DLC.

Movement is more fun, characters are more fun, story is at least somewhat more interesting on different playthroughs due to your character actually having a part int he dialogue

-DC right in front of my door in my base
-My neighbor kills my sleeping body and loots all of my ♥♥♥♥
-I wait hidden by his base for 30 minutes
-He comes back with a horse, I wait for him to go inside, grab the horse, run away
-He starts whining in chat, I ask for my ♥♥♥♥ back, he tells me to ♥♥♥♥ off
-Kill his horse, get the meat, run in front of his base while he's home and drop all of the meat in front of his door
-I get raided an hour later

10/10

In all seriousness, think of this less like a "Minecraft for adults" and more like a "Battlefield with extra steps". You WILL lose all of your stuff regularly, that's part of the game. Try not to get too salty about it or you won't be having fun.

Also, trust me on this one, before even ATTEMPTING to use the Assault Rifle, practice with it on an aim train server. The spray pattern on that gun makes every gun in CS:GO look like preschool ♥♥♥♥ by comparison

Note: I have over 400 hours on this game on Xbox and ~30 on Origin.

The best way I can describe this is if PUBG and Overwatch had a baby.

The Good:
-Gunplay feels amazing, and your bullets generally go where they should.
-The character design and character / weapon skins are very high quality.
-Extremely fun to play with friends, even if none of you are very good.
-Completely new maps seemingly every few months, so things stay somewhat fresh.
-The revival / ping mechanics, while since adopted by other BR games, started here and is still the most "polished" version of these systems, IMO.
-The Dev Team is super chill and FREQUENTLY communicates with the community.
-Cross-platform. Play with your friends all you want.

The Bad:
-Unlocking new legends is TIME CONSUMING without paying IRL money. The default champions are good, and there's a large amount of them, but the best / cheapest option to unlock all of them is a $40 DLC.
-The Battle Passes (especially the current one) are also very time consuming with nothing too exciting in terms of rewards.
-Playing with randoms is... a dice roll, to say the least. 50%+ of my games last a matter of seconds because people like to drop from the ship instantly and die in a chaotic 5-squad crossfire.
-Terrain issues. I noticed this mostly in the new map, and it can be pretty annoying sometimes (and keep in mind I'm only 12 hours in with the new map, and this has already happened a few times). There's plenty of terrain where you get into "They can shoot you, but you can't shoot them" situations. I've had to straight-up run from teamfights that I would of won otherwise because I start getting shot by someone I can't even see. I haven't had this happen on my 400 hours on xbox during the first 2 maps.

DLC completely bricked the gameplay loop with numerous bugs and things seemingly tied to framerate now

Either revert the changes and release later or FIX IT, FAST.

Edit: They fixed it :)

Once you get past the initial overload of the game having 40+ classes and a boatload of systems, half of which you ignore, this game has some of the most addicting gameplay out of all. I've been playing this game off and on since it released. My hours on Steam don't do it justice, I've played THOUSANDS of hours off the game's normal launcher.

Just make sure to play on the "Reboot" server, that's where 80% of the population is AND it almost completely negates this game's biggest flaw (pay to win) because you can't trade with players or buy player power with real money.

--PROS--
-Addicting "diablo-esque" gameplay loop
-Leveling is absurdly easy, especially if you have a "burning" character (every level you gain gives you 2 extra levels)
-Gets updates regularly
-Over 40 classes to choose from, there's something for everyone, and any RPG archetype you can think of probably exists.
-Systems in place that make leveling alts encouraged (Link Skills, Legion)

--Either/Or--
-VERY Anime.
-VERY Grindy.
-Terrible character voice acting (not in cons because it can be turned off)

--Cons--
-If you don't play on Reboot, be prepared to pay hundreds of dollars to have a decent character
-Massive information overload, especially at the start
-If you're the type of person that likes to play one character and one character only, you'll be considerably weaker in late game. Alts are important
-The game has a ""soft level cap"" of 200, by that I mean you can level past 200 (I think 300 is the hard cap, don't quote me on that), but the "real game" begins at level 200, kinda like WoW where the "real game" doesn't start until level cap.
-The story is... yeah, just skip through the dialogue
-Some classes (the new Explorers are the biggest offender here) have LOOONG story tutorials, some of which you'll kill maybe 5 monsters from level 1 to 30.

If you haven't gotten this game yet, get it.

My hours on steam don't do justice, I've put well over 2,000 hours on this game on the PS3.

The game is MASSIVE, and every inch of it is filled up with something to do.

Every playthrough is different. You won't get bored.
