This game took the series a slightly different direction for this story of the Danganronpa universe.

While some may be mixed on how the game functions, personally, I felt that the game was fun and interesting to play; switching from a logic-based interactive visual novel to an action-driven 3rd person shooter. Though I prefer the former, it was an interesting new experience and gave me hours of quality fun while also providing a good story, like the other games.

The Characters
Our protagonist is Makoto Naegi's sister, Komaru, who, as she says herself, is a "boring, normal high school girl". This characterization doesn't stop her from growing as the game goes on, however, as she seems almost completely different by the end of the game. And while I may be biased towards her for various reasons, her character is amusing at times and is very dynamic as the game progresses. Many characters from previous titles return as well, primarily Toko ♥♥♥♥♥♥, Komaru's partner throughout the game. The main antagonists of the game are the Warriors of Hope, a group of 5 kids bent on genocide to form a kids-only paradise, who all have unique characterizations.

The Gameplay
As stated in the introduction of the review, the game switches to a 3rd person shooter. You spend that time shooting up Monokumas that are trying to kill people with your trusty Hacking Gun given to you by a special someone at the beginning of the game. You get various "truth bullets" as the game progresses that have different abilities for making your way through the city and fending off the Monokumas, each has a significant use. The action is well paced as well, so keep yourself on your toes for killer bears on the loose.

The Plot
It makes sense, for the most part, and it explains itself when it gets a little over-the-top, besides one exception in Chapter 5 where there's a literal ghost. This game tends to have a handful of moments where your mind just draws a blank, but in a good or intriguing way. Trying to keep this as spoiler-free as possible, there's not a lot else to say except that the plot is worth it. Note that this game takes place between the first and second game.

Conclusion
Overall, I believe this game is worth playing; Spike Chunsoft took a risk making the Danganronpa format different for a change and it payed off in the end. The gameplay's solid, the characters are well-written as usual, and the plot is worth your time.
