This is one of those games where "beating it" just means you've finished the tutorial. 88 hours in, and I've got two "wins" but I still feel like I've only seen a small fraction of what lies beyond the main path.

If you're new to it, do yourself a favor and get the Spell Lab mod once you've died at the Hisii base a couple of times. There's a tutorial on there for learning the intricacies of wand building, and once you get that down, you'll be unstoppable. Until, of course, you're stopped.

What a wild ride. To keep it short and spoiler-free, Enderal is an absolute masterwork of a mod, far, FAR better than the original Skyrim in so many ways. The story is beautiful, the side-quests are all super engaging, often reminding me of DnD plot hooks instead of generic RPG quests. I'd often find myself wanting to level up to get strong enough to do additional quests, because I'd found the quest giver and was super interested in finding out whatever mystery had been presented to me before I'd even begun the actual quest. It took me a good 78 hours to beat the game, and not once did I feel like I was trudging through dialogue or uninteresting lore dumps just to get to the killy bits of the game. It does start super slow, though, so be warned.

As for the gameplay itself, I thoroughly enjoyed my time playing Enderal. The combat is difficult, but (usually) fair, and the world is entirely unlevelled. I went my first 20 hours in game without dying once, because I managed to be super careful about what I did, and played it safe. I fully believe it's possible to beat the entire game on a blind playthrough without dying, simply because with the exception of a few questionable encounters, as long as you're paying attention and being careful, the game doesn't hand you anything you can't deal with if you don't come in informed and prepared. I played as an Elementalist/Phasmalist, so I was a lightning casting death machine with a stand, so your mileage may vary.

The voice acting can be hit-or-miss, with some superb work coming from the actors of Tealor, Jespar, Calia, and Tharael, to name a few. It's clearly not professional at some points, but a lot of whats there is actually really good, even with some mic quality issues and strange performances. Then there's that ONE STUPID KID IN RIVERVILLE who sounds like everything he says is super sarcastic.

I had a decent bit of bugs in my playthrough, but nothing that broke my save or anything. I did have to open the console once or twice, but they came off more as "occasionally annoying" than anything else, except for that one inn that locked me in conversation and I had to close my game. Saving and re-loading fixed most everything though. I found that the subtitles didn't exactly match what people were saying, especially later in the game, and sometimes people would talk over each other, or just stand around, waiting for something, and I had to re-load a zone or bump into people to get them moving again.

Overall, I loved my time in Enderal, and I'm looking forward to some day playing it all over again. I highly recommend this to anyone who wished there were "more" to Skyrim, and/or is looking for a mature, deep story than you typically find in Bethesda's games. Walk blessed, and thank you SureAI for bringing this to Steam, I never would have found out about it otherwise.
