Don't Escape is a horror-themed point-and-click adventures from the same creator as Deep Sleep (and that would be Scriptwelder).

While Deep Sleep are more of a usual adventure, where you explore new territories and try to reach the end, the Don't Escape games,
as the name suggests, are more of a closed-in variations of those.
Instead of getting to the end, you will find yourself in a relatively enclosed spaces, trying to collect the needed tools, items, materials, information,
that will help you do whatever you need to do to Not Escape.
Why are you specifically not escaping is different across all three games, and is explained, so you'll get the reasons for that fast and clear.

Visually this game is very pretty.
Graphics are pixelated and most of the times grim, dark-toned. There is always the white noise effect over your screen, that kind of adds a bit more tension,
as if something isn't particularly right.
Details are done just fine, so even though it is pixelated, you'll understand what is that item lying on the floor, what is this silhouette before you and so on.
There's not much of sound going on, but it is there where it's needed, so all the interactions with items will provide you some acoustic information on what it is.

As for how it plays, it is very satisfying.
All the screen transitions are fast, there's no bugging, unneeded animations that will slower the gameplay process.
The gameplay mostly consists of exploration and puzzle-solving.
You find an item, maybe read something about how it may be used, and then proceed to do whatever you need to reach your goal.

This trilogy is pretty short, I've spent 3 hours to 100% all of it. Like with all the puzzles, once you know what to do, you'll be able to complete all three in less than 15 minutes.
But even so, in my opinion, it provides more than enough entertainment for the price, especially if bought on sale.
Also, as of 2020, both abovementioned game trilogies can be enjoyed for free via Armor Games website. Which is really cool.
But Flash, on which these run, will be closing near the end of the year, and having an alternative to play them on Steam is nice.

In the end, I'd say this is a really really solid Recommended for the Don't Escape Trilogy.
I'd like to thank you for reading, and wish you a great one.

Remember those good old days of flash games, when Newgrounds still had some popularity?
Times when Deep Sleep, Don't Escape, and My Father's long, long legs
were kind of a local must-play?
Well, now they've made their way from your browser to Steam (first two, at least).

First, I'd like to mention that Deep Sleep and Don't Escape games are actually still up on the internet, you can play them on Armor Games free of charge.
But still, many fans came here to pay money for it. Even though they've probably completed them all. Maybe multiple times.
That's a pretty solid statement in regards to quality of the game, at the very least to me.

As for the game itself, it's a horror-themed point-and-click adventure.
It's fast, so you won't get into Deep Sleep (I am sorry.) after every screen transition.
Visuals are very nice. All you see has this sort of decaying feel, like rotting furniture, or chipped walls, musty, dusty atmosphere around.
Sound design isn't anything much, but it does it's job perfectly, feeling crisp and conveying whatever you've interacted with just the right way.
Puzzles aren't hard, but require enough input to be entertaining.
Story isn't the strongest part of the game, but it is there, and it will be enough to explain what is happening and why it is happening.

Maybe it's a bit too pricey for the amount of content there is, as the whole trilogy is very short (I've completed it all in 1.5 hour), but on a sale - it should be fine.
Additionally, this game will survive the horrible, horrible loss of flash when it goes down.

All in all, it is a pretty fun experience, which I'd recommend you, handsome person on the other side of the screen, to play.
If anything, try the browser version. You shouldn't be disappointed.

Tamashii is a cryptic, religion-themed, dark, horror platformer.
This combination was the reason for me to buy this.

  • First of all, I'd like to talk about aesthetics.
Everything in the game looks like it's taken from a gothic church and then corrupted, making it look even more unsettling.
Walls are gray, decorations are gray, the whole atmosphere is gray. If that makes any sense...
Even though seemingly all that is around you made of stone, there are many... Things, that are moving, breathing, twitching and writhing in agony.
There is quite an amount of sections when everything will turn into flesh, creating a contrast and making you disturbed.
I mean, running down hallways made entirely of organics? Cozy.

  • And now a bit about plot.
Oh boy, it's one of those games where you probably won't understand a thing and will try to interpret all the information poured into you however you can.
As it was mentioned before, this game has many references to religion, bible, etc. As I, myself, do not bear any knowledge of that kind,
which means I cannot tell you much, but I do think that at least some things I did get correctly.
You start as a being created by a god of some kind. It tells you that the temple you are in is corrupt by evil forces,
and you were created for the sole reason of cleansing the place. You will be doing that by going into chambers, and completing platforming sections,
some have a bit of puzzles, which aren't really hard. At the end of every chapter, boss will appear, that must be destroyed to proceed.

I will put the spoiler for the next part of it, as I will be going into my thoughts on pretty much the rest of the story,
my interpretations of theme, meaning, ending.

Soon, after completion of the first (and every consecutive) chamber you'll wander into a figure. Person. Something.
She explains that she's basically the corruption that you are meant to destroy, but oh no, an unexpected turn of events! (yeah that was sarcasm)
You were working for the bad guy all along. She gives some insight on who she is - "a demon to some, a deity to others" (I believe I've quoted her correctly).
You won't fight her, but talk and leave to proceed with the errands you've been given, completing chamber by chamber,
uncovering how nothing what it looks like, covered in deception and left to rot in pain.
After completing the last level, she'll explain that even if you want, there's no meaning or reason to fighting her,
and that you will soon understand why she considers your creator evil.
You get back to the beginning, where you've been made, and your god tells you that you've done everything that was required of you, that you can rest now,
but... Something is wrong. It considers you to be corrupted by her. So instead of rest, you'll get to fight your creator.
Well not really fight, you actually will only run away, but in successfully doing so, you will be... Reborn?
As far as I understood, you will be reborn to, basically, become what she was, fighting against corruption, lies, masks that your original creator have made.
So, from what I can tell, the theme is somewhat an infinite cycle of fight between biblic powerful beings, trying to accomplish what they think is right.
That would be all I can say regarding plot, as, once again, I'm not profound in this kind of thing. Thanks for reading though. C:

  • As a closing of this review, gameplay needs to be mentioned.
As for a short game like this, it does it's job.
Tamashii is honestly pretty easy, with checkpoints every screen, levels brief and low variety of obstacles.
Character controls are decent enough, feeling a bit floaty, but playable nonetheless.
Hitboxes are annoying, sometimes. Like, that trap didn't really hit you, but you died anyway.
Bosses aren't hard either, but they look great and fighting them is pretty fun.
For those who want to get some challenge out of it, there are achievements for completing levels on highscore,
and getting highscore requires you to beat as many levels as you can in short amount of time and without dying.
Also, there are plenty of secrets throughout the game.

In the end, if you're looking this up for some gameplay - you may buy it to run through once, but that's about it.
But if you're looking for the atmosphere, weird story, sick visuals - that would be quite a title for you to play.
Oh, and also, there's a sh*tton of jumpscares. Yet, they weren't as stupid/annoying as in many other "horror" games, at least in my opinion.

Thank you for reading, have a great one.

There's no need to hide the fact that this game has fourth wall breaking, meta-stuff, etc.
Clue's in the name.

The game is good. It's about fun, cute girls doing what most meta highschool girls do these days. Eating mochi.
MetaWare High School talks about fictional characters from their own perspective on that topic, going deep enough to be memorable and enjoyable,
but not as deep that you will hate yourself for all the demons you've killed in Doom.
There are fun moments, sad stuff, uneasy talks...
Which, in the end, will leave somewhat of a bittersweet aftertaste. But it is still worth it.

Overall, I'd recommend you, Mr. (or Ms., or Mrs.) Player, to try it out for yourself.
It's free anyway, right?

P.S: Dance ending is canon and I will not consider otherwise.

This game is a predecessor to "Cthulhu Saves the World" (by the date of release, not storywise).
Therefore, there will be lots of comparisons between the two.
Also if you are interested, I've made a review for CStW as well.

To be fair, this game was more enjoyable than the next title from Zeboyd Games.

  • Map design. They're mazelike, but unlike CStW's empty, lifeless, boring maps, these are actually good.
There are cemeteries, libraries, desolate cities and more, and they all have their own decorations, styles and feeling to them.

  • Random encounters. There is a limit to how many encounters you can get per dungeon, which is good on paper, but doesn't help much, since you most likely won't hit the limit,
unless you'll purposely clean the whole map out, running back and forth (or, well, use the "fight" button from the menu to force the battle) into mobs.
Note: the mana is replenished only on checkpoints or at an inn in a town, so if you run out of it while in a middle of a dungeon,
and you cannot brute-force your way through by spamming regular attack, you may get softlocked.
There are ways to avoid it, like exhausting all the encounters while standing near checkpoints, so you'll be able to get mana whenever you need to,
or by saving every 5 tiles, doing so until you run into a fight, reload from save, rinse, repeat.
I had to use the latter method twice, but I've got into this kind of situation right before the finish, so it wasn't as bad.

  • Combat. Once again, unlike BoD's "successor", it felt more bearable.
No enemies that can kill your whole party in 1 turn, no 8 enemies per one fight (it's 6 max in this one, which is somewhat better).
There are enough different abilities, some special skills, for example, a skill that makes Dem more tankier (or more of a berserk, depending on what you'll chose upon levelling up),
or attacks that are extremely powerful, but only against machinery, unique unite abilities, that are used by 2 characters simultaneously, and so on.
Sadly, you won't be using much of the combat spectrum (I've mashed regular attack through most of the encounters), except for bosses, which are pretty decent, actually.

  • Resource management. Probably the only thing that is even worse than CStW. You cannot buy anything except armor and weapons in the game.
There're potions, that heal+revive a character, but you can only find them in chests via exploration.
Weapons and armor, that are class-locked to each character. For example, there are swords for Dem, suits for Erik, glasses for Lita, etc.
Also, there's only one armor slot. Not even one for accessories or anything alike. Oof.

  • Plot. There's not much to it, but in all honesty, I liked it.
After nuclear war has wiped out the whole planet, undead started rising, and became sole inhabitants of the Earth.
Dem the skeleton, hero he considers himself and acts like one, will be your first playable character.
First screen he's on will be the Troll's lair, which Dem has set out to cleanse, to ensure safety of nearby town's residents.
Soon after, he will gain his first companion, Sara the ghost, which will be acting like a healer and magic caster.
You see, she's a psychic, and she can read your mind because of it. Why would she do that?
Well, you're kind of a skeleton, and you cannot speak. Cause, you know... You have no flesh at all, let alone lungs or vocal chords.
Because of it, there will be quite a few OK jokes, her misinterpreting thoughts that you have into something different, creating some parody-like flavour.
When she joins, she explains that she has a mission of her own, that you together will pursue instantly afterwards.
This will lead into more dungeons, more characters, more bosses, more bits of this short story.
I won't write the whole story or the ending, because I think that this RPG won't hurt to complete for yourself. I, myself, enjoyed the simple, yet satisfying ending.

One last comparison: while this game has some parody in it, it doesn't feel as forced down the throat as in Cthulhu Saves the World.
Here it is more of an addition to get a smile out of you here and there.

In a conclusion, there are some frustrating moments, there are some fun moments, there are some joyful moments.
It isn't perfect, but in a span of 3-4 hours that it will take to complete,
Breath of Death won't feel as if it overstayed it's welcome and won't leave a sour taste of "shouldn't have wasted my time on this".
Also, it is dirt-cheap and even goes on 50%+ regularly.

Anyway, thanks for reading, and have a great one.

"A cheap RPG Maker game that has some parody, why not try it out?" - Is what I thought.
It so happens, that cheapness and parody didn't help this game to be entertaining.

Aiming for old school, this RPG has thrown out of the window many things that might've made it better.

  • Map design. It's basically non-existant. Yeah, different dungeons have different tilesets... Cool? But that's all good I can say about it. All the maps (except the world map and towns) are literal mazes. There's nothing to interact with, nothing to look at, and therefore no fun exploring them at all (yes, there are chests here and there, hidden in dead ends, but that didn't help me commit to trying to find them all). It might've been not that much of a chore if it weren't for one thing:
  • Random encounters. Many RPG Maker fans tremble when they hear these two words spoken together.
There is a nice feature that limits the amount of them per dungeon. And still, this feature isn't particulary useful. Why?
Because you'll most likely finish the stage before you hit the limit.
  • Enemies. Some enemies have pretty BS attacks, that best countered by...Reloading save. Or using 1-up (I'll explain what that is a bit later). For example, in the late-game there are encounter of 3 Coleopterous', and every single one of them has an attack against your whole party. If you haven't levelled much into tankiness, then you'll have a bad time. Another example is all the mobs ganging up on one teammate, which may lock you into in a cycle of reviving one member, just so second will die while doing so. It isn't uncommon, especially due to the fact that there's up to 8 enemies per fight. Thankfully, if there's 8 of them, they're the weak types.
  • Resource management. Barely any. I'm one of those people that has infinite amount of unspent consumables at the end of the game, but even so, I disliked the fact that you cannot buy anything except armor and weapons in the game.
Basically, there're potions, that heal+revive a character, 1-up, that let's you re-do the fight if you've failed it (so if you've last saved long ago, you won't lose progress). Weapons, that are class-locked to each character (e.g Swords for Cthulhu, Tridents for Umi, etc.), and armor, that acts the same. Also, there's no variety of it, like helmets, body armor, legwear, accessories, there's just one slot for it.

Okay, so after this much of criticism, maybe at least story will make up for it?

    Ehh...Wouldn't say so.
The amount of story, dialogues, cutscenes is very low. Like, what, about 10 minutes of it in 6 hours of gameplay?
    That isn't very much.
Characters are OK, jokes are OK, but, once again, you barely see it.

As a conclusion, I'd say this game wasn't enjoyable, despite me looking forward to spending some quality time on a Lovecraftian adventure.

Graphics are quite cool, but that doesn't make up for how shallow gameplay is.
As the game has stolen assets, not sure if talking about cool graphics is technically correct.
Also, it is extremely overpriced for what it is.

Utterly broken camera, controls, settings, even main menu.
You have to turn on VSync to be able to shoot. VSync. To shoot. How are they related?..
I've experienced an unbearable amount of technical difficulties, and I've played it for just an hour.
Lara's animations look really bad in this game, to a degree where they feel bugged out as well (what the hell did they do to the swan dive?!).

Two previous games, Legend and Anniversary, were actually a lot better. Go for them instead.

As I do enjoy the fourth wall breaking games, I've picked this game on sale.
Sadly, the meta part of this game was one of the few good points about it.

Pros:
  • Platformer-wise, it is okay, you've got a dash and a double jump which are pretty decent. Due to map simplicity, this moveset does enough. If the game were longer, that wouldn't have sufficed.
  • Combat is kind of enjoyable? Game journalist difficulty though.
  • Meta parts of this game are quite good. Talking to the player, referencing game mechanics, etc. Some jokes are fun too.

But, even this small enjoyment was destroyed by next:

    Cons:
  • Cutscenes. Unskippable. Cutscenes. It wouldn't have been such a problem, if they were short and if there were few.
But oh boy, oh boy, if you're planning to play this game, prepare to sit through 5 minutes (or longer) cutscenes, in which everyone speaks really slowly, with pauses (that will start to feel like eternity) after every change of character, and the cutscenes appear so often, that you, sometimes, won't even get gameplay inbetween them.
(Tip: In the "Danger Zone" category of the settings there's a button that allows you to enable fast-forward mode. Though, it is still not fast enough.)
  • Map design is not good. Since game is trying to go meta, like you're breaking the game, maps are very rough, usually maze-like or corridor-like, and they do not have any appeal to them. Everything looks same-y, and they will become uninteresting very soon into the game.

It would have been an OK game (not good, not great, but OK) if weren't for the pacing problems listed above.
    Cannot recommend.

The game was really entertaining. I liked it a lot. But for every thing that I liked, there was a thing I disliked.
So, I think Pro/Con type of review will explain it better.

Pros:
  • Game is 20-40h long.
  • Story is mature, writing is good. Characters are well-developed, their interactions always felt fun to read.
  • Combat is very well made. It is the usual turn-based but with quite a few changes, such as "Turn order" UI, formation settings, skills that can be changed levelled/unvelevelled at anytime, and crafting, which is crucial for your team to be well equipped.
  • No random encounters. Some encounters can be outrun if you do not want to fight.

    Cons:
  • Scaling in this game is somewhat off. Your teammembers will often be one-shot, therefore making it pretty much required to have "constructs" to take damage for you instead, or staggering the enemies. Ofcourse mass reviving is an option, but it does get pretty tiring...
  • This game is obsessed with it's crafting system. Unless you always craft new gear the moment you get yourself enough of the crafting materials - you're going to have a bad time. Especially if you're playing on hard. A bit of grinding may be needed to get some of the top tier armor/weapons.
  • Map design. Sometimes it's pretty great, sometimes it's mazes built on top of mazes to interconnect with mazes via maze. The map designer seemed to adore the maze-like structure of the maps, which I find to be pretty boring and dull. While graphically these still look good, playing them wasn't fun, and very well repetitive. Especially when you're trying to 100% the game, finding every chest and all that...
  • Combat may feel repetitive sometime. But, well, that's nothing unusual for RPG-maker games.

    In conclusion:
If you're okay with it's flaws, you'll get a very enjoyable RPG-maker experience, the story about team of fighters that are not putting up with the ♥♥♥♥ that is going on in their countries. That is at first, at least...
