The pigeon was used in both World War I and World War II by the Australian Forces. They were also awarded with various medals of achievement. Thirty-two pigeons have been decorated with the Dickin Medal, for "brave service" including Commando, G.I. Joe, Paddy, Royal Blue, and William of Orange.
