decided to play this game after a long time, Rockstar Games Launcher is asking for a verification code, sure no problem.

...except they're not sending the code to me. confirmed the e-mail, tried logging in to their website, same thing. Checked inbox and spam, nada

Verification code required. Seems it's a common enough issue for people to post about it :l

Can't play my purchase because their launcher is trash...

The 9-ish hours for my playthrough was well worth it, not sure at full price though, I received a key from a humble bundle choice bundle. Starting off is a bit difficult until you get enough skill points to load the dices your way, but once you get rolling, it's quite the cake walk, especially once you get rid of the time constraints on you

Some of the level 1 perks you can learn are quite powerful, with some kind of being a desperation thing. Fueling yourself by expending dice is not dice-efficient, and you're better off making money with the dice, and then buying food with it. After obtaining the first perk, you can then load the skill's interaction by +1, learn the second perk, and finally max the skill out by loading the dice to +2, making it easy to get 6's to maximize your interactions (in DnD terms, score a crit on most interactions)

That said, keep in mind this game is a point and click kind of story adventure, you're mostly using your mouse to interact with the world, while the movement keys simply control the camera. One playthrough can cover most things, but achievements will require multiple playthroughs as if you leave the world, such as joining a mercenary's crew, or departing on a frontier ship, I believe this ends your playthrough. You can also choose to refuse to join, which unlocks the alternative achievement

Do give the game a try if you think you'll like such a game, especially if it's on sale

For a simple dungeoneering game where you have your movement, dodge button, 3-hit combo button, charge attack, and a potion button, it has a surprising amount of bugs, one which includes a soft lock, forcing you to restart the game and lose your progress(it's when a boss pushes you outside of the arena and you kill it, disabling your teleport item. Can't get back in, can't get out). Parroting another review, the gameplay loop is basic, kill reshaded enemies with slight changes per biome, collect loot, upgrade gear, rinse and repeat until you get to the last stage. Game gives you a brief rundown on what to do before throwing you to the wolves, and doesn't explain what certain things do when you encounter them. When I encountered a teleport home chest, it took me a few teleports until I realized it was a safety deposit box, and not a transform trash loot into expensive loot before placing it somewhere on the map kind of thing. Being able to analyze and come to conclusions will definitely help you

If there's one good thing about the game, it's the artwork, very nice art, including character designs, even though the NPCs will mostly repeat the same thing, with a few variations

2/9/24 Edit: The game is deceptively a game that relies heavily on automaton, but you don't get introduced to this until Level 2, which is where the demo ends. Ideally try not to go too crazy on automaton until Level 3, where geothermal reactors are introduced and electricity becomes the fuel (Level 2 automaton relies on fuel items to power, which gets more expensive as you increase in scale).

THIS GAME HAS A DEMO, PLEASE TRY IT OUT. YOU MAY NEED TO SEARCH FOR THE DEMO BUTTON ON THE SIDE BAR AS IT WILL NOT BE ABOVE THE BUY GAME BUTTON LIKE MOST TITLES

While this is a dislike post, I want to emphasize, I LIKE WHAT THEY'RE COOKING. Once they fix all the things wrong with the game, I feel like this would be a worthwhile game playing. Note I'm only going over the bad parts, the good parts are hard to explain, but I hope you'll understand them when you play the demo

Parroting what the other reviews say-

English translation is really bad, and the pacing is broken. The intro literally cuts to the next scene before they finish posting all the script. At times, conversations with NPCs will be cut off and sometimes makes no sense. Worst of all, if you accidentally click or press space to proceed the conversation, it might at times skip to the next script instead of post all of the immediately for reading, so you might advance without knowing the context. At times, you're kind of forced to wait for the auto-text to play everything, like with Lilith, for some strange reason(probably a bug)

Upgrade loop seems pretty basic. Go to next level, and your previous floor's best-in-slot gear is back to how you were initially in the beginning of that previous floor. Floor 2, your monster girl pickaxe/iron pickaxe is now behaving as if you were using a stone/copper pickaxe. You quite literally need to put in time to upgrade before proceeding the Main Story Quest, as I literally got one shot when an enemy mob in the MSQ 'field dungeon' threw their pickaxe at me. After I switched from Iron to Steel, I could easily sweep them

Mini-Dungeons(?) are very basic. Go down ladder and generate a 1-2 floor that may simply replay the same map. Had one map reuse a map and I spawned on the left, cleared all the mobs, go down the hole to the right, spawn on the right of the EXACT SAME MAP, sweep mobs, leave at the left

Instructions. My god, the instructions. At times, the game will leave you hanging and you'll be unsure what to do. You will need to think outside of the box at times, and rely on your memory on what you've seen previously. Once I assembled everything to drill to level 3 from level 2, I was getting an error message "Drill is not powered". I spent several minutes staring at the super drill, looking for an energy connection but to no avail. It was literally when I decided to revisit the monster grils on level 1, did I realize there was an energy connection on the bottom floor. After hooking it up, was able to progress, but nothing in the Quests tab or anything told me I needed to go back to the first floor to power it, I only figured it out by chance

Mining, one of the main things. The game utilizes your cursor's general position to determine what/where to swing, but at times, it will not register an actual hit until you wiggle around and reposition yourself. You can quite literally run at a wall, position your cursor at the wall, and you will just not mine, but rather whiff and do nothing. Sometimes I may need to bring the cursor closer to the character to get it to mine, sometimes I need to run around and attack it from a different angle because it will not register my mining attempt. Not sure what's causing this bug, but you will at times will not be able to mine something and you'll need to attack it a different way

Speaking about bugs, there are quite a number, but as this is an Early Access, you're encouraged to beta test the game for the developer and report bugs and/or make suggestions. I've noticed your character's outline turns purple if you stand behind the super drill's pillar at specific locations and swing, or sometimes corpses will spawn on top of other assets, and forever be uninteractable after you break the asset. Saw a corpse spawn on top of a bush, and instead of breaking both the bush and the corpse, the bush broke, and the corpse is just sitting there... MENACINGLY. Oops.

All in all, if you can look past all the gross translation and bugs, some fun can be had. I do hope they expand the monster girl interactions though, as the partner system is mostly "run up to them, gift 4 items a day, become friends". The rare conversation gives you two replies, and at times, the innocent looking comment you picked might be you spitting fire at the monster gril. "I've already defeated you once" - > "I can kill you over and over again blah blah blah, give up or I'll keep doing it". NANI (not that it'll affect anything, illusion of choice after all)

+ Lots of campaigns, basics are pretty straightforward to get

- buggy as hell, I'm not sure what's causing it but at times, when I snap to another part of the map (like clicking idle village icon, my computer will freeze completely, forcing me to power cycle it to get it running again :l

Other bugs include sliding units (not sure what causes it, but sometimes this will slide the unit onto water, so they can't escape), or units overlaying each other, making them unresponsive unless you pick one of them and move them to free the stacking units. the hell?

Edit: Originally recommended, but now not, what the hell, I crashed twice trying to do the last Indian campaign, it used to be a crash once in a while

Game suffers from poor unit handling and unbalanced AI. Often, it's a struggle to try to control your units and get them to play nicely with each other, unfortunately, each unit seems to have a square where no movement can overlap, so often times they'll run around because their movement AI is trash

The difficulty of the AI is also hilariously unbalanced to your detriment. I'm playing on 'Standard' difficulty, but often times I'm having to restart the campaign because the game wants you to build in a specific way to deal with the early frequent waves of clubmen. Btw, there's a 3rd party on the side that will keep sending archers your way to snipe your villagers, shame it's a 1v3, eh?

I just spend two hours on the conquest of crete and the game expects you to fight yourway, uphill, against mind-controlling priests, and micromanaged archers who all kite individually. KITE. INDIVIDUALLY.

AI is busted because all of their archers will kite you, meaning if your unit doesn't have the movement or reach to touch an archer, they'll kill you without a scratch to them

I wanna play through the campaign because I like RTS campaigns, but this one... just ain't it.

I wish more companies learn from the unit controls of Starcraft 2, controlling units there is perfect compared to this

It's Monster Hunter on the console! You've been waiting for this ever since forever!

Except it doesn't live up to the hype.

If you wanted a Monster Hunter on the console, you got one, but it isn't as exciting as the portable versions.

The content is quite bare for a monster hunter game, and it heavily favors raw crits. Stacking elements on dual blades can still outdps raw, but outside of that and a few other weapons, you're almost always building towards one particular build, killing the diversity of monster hunter.

That said, you can customize your appearance for once!

For Newcomers, you might wonder why this game got the "Game within a Game" reward.

Well, let me introduce you to a little minigame called "Gwent"...

... after I play a few more matches.

...five more minutes.
