Although it had a lot of heart and ambition for its time I still kinda hated this while i was working my way through it. I was charmed and enjoying it slightly but couldn't shake what a huge dropoff for the series it is. The overworld stuff linking the levels is really annoying and boring. Stylistically and polish-wise it also tarnishes Sonic's good name.

However, once you beat it and start working on the time trials and A rank missions it gets really fun! The surprising depth of the movement and level design begins to shine. I even began to appreciate the non-Sonic campaigns for their diversity while grinding for A-ranks. Yes, even Big the Cat's adventure (as a chill, super easy diversion once you figure out how it works)!

(STRONGLY recommend playing with the SADX mod manager and all the quality of life mods the latest build comes with by default. Crazy easy install that helps run the game in proper widescreen with significantly less bugginess and ugliness.)

wow a good open world game !

The game's twist on platform fighter mechanics feels great and likely makes it my favorite of the genre since Smash Bros. Melee without trying to clone it at all. Awesome game if you're looking for something with sick movement and a high skill ceiling.
Furthermore, the devs have been great about staying on top of the game with fixes. Their transparency and dedication to make NASB as good as it can be instills a ton of faith in me and makes me want to keep playing even more.

The rollback netcode alone already makes this the most worthwhile fighting game purchase on Steam. The fact that it's an incredibly deep and rewarding, yet fully approachable game with a great tutorial, a tight and diverse cast, and solid skill based matchmaking is all just a bonus.
