newton's first law of motion states that an object will stay at rest or continue to move at a constant velocity unless acted on by an unbalanced force. the red block provides an unbalanced force which causes the yellow and blue blocks to accelerate.

newton's second law of motion states that when an object is acted on by an unbalanced force it will accelerate. this acceleration is directly proportional to the unbalanced force and is inversely proportional to the mass. as the red block causes the yellow and blue blocks to accelerate the acceleration can be calculated using the equation: a = Fun / m

newton's third law of motion states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. as the red block exerts a force on the yellow block, the yellow block exerts an equal and opposite force on the red block.

the specific heat capacity of the red block is 4180Jkg-1°C-1. this means it takes 4180J of heat energy to change the temperature of 1kg of the red block by 1°C
