I knew my choices and every consequence they would cause. I trained and studied, learned everything I could and employed every at my disposal. I took the path I deemed virtuous and tried my best to mediate and bring positive change to everybody's lives.

Everybody was worse for it and the world ended in misery.

This is way too relatable.

Most games (and stories, books and various other works of art), being holistic is crucial (exceptions apply). For an IP like 40k, this is worth double...and this game delivers it. Oh boy, how it delivers! Mechanicus blew my mind off with how excellent its art direction is: designs, sounds, dialogue, and the music, oh the music. It's perfect.

The gameplay is somewhat simple, but engaging. It consists of gearing up your units, choosing a team and a mission, exploring a tomb/dungeon; units have a decent variety since you can customize tech priests with basically everything available, and exploring is a balance between risk/reward. There are puzzles while exploring, which spice things up, and you can get great stuff from them...or get hurt.

Combat is harsh early on, then it becomes easier, then harsh again, then easy. It all depends on the techs you unlock and how well you manage cognition points (the resource for most combat actions). Once you understand what you're doing and how the enemy works, you shouldn't be facing too much challenge...unless you customize the game, that is: it has inbuilt customization options, like Slay the Spire (if you're familiar with it).

Now for the downsides...it could've done more, I feel. More detailed exploration which is akin to darkest Dungeon, or materializing some objectives. For example, there is a mission about escorting sacrificial 'lambs'...except they don't even appear in combat or in exploration (They do appear in the puzzles though, so there's that.). The combat could have more environmental interaction other than obstacles, LoS and necron computers, but the current focus is not bad.

Overall, easily one of the best 40k games out there and an amazing experience.

Base game is short and simple, almost incomplete. I suspect the devs always planned to make this a DLC factory.
