This game sure might be a GOTY... in 10 months or so.

Pros:

- The sound design in this game is phenomenal, especially during windy days and a storm. Rain falling on top of the roof or a broken car, the rustle of leaves on the trees during a wind, great lightning sound and its delay. The game sound lovely when walking through extreme weather.

- The graphics look good, though I prefer it looking like the originals and the low settings hit that sweet spot. So there's an option for those who want that sweet nostalgia hit.

- The gameplay loop is the same as previous games, works as it should. Playing a loot goblin works, going artifact hunting works, zones are fun to explore and I really don't mind some puzzles that let you get to a really good loot, I like those.

- The environment is gritty, depressing and pessimistic, as it should be.

- The story so far is really engaging, though I don't like the personality of our main character. I'd have preferred a silent protagonist.

Cons:

- The Zone feels incredibly empty most of the times. Nothing is happening in the distance, it's only alive around your vicinity. A group of stalkers will spawn next to you, then a pack of dogs and you'll witness a fight where the human AI just struggles to deal with them, dies to them or after shooting for about 2 minutes it will forget about the target and move on. There's probably a reason why binoculars aren't in the game, when nothing that's isn't scripted happens in the distance. It's most visible when the emission ends and suddenly a squad of military or enemy stalkers spawns in the wilderness, already prepared to make your life hell. It's immersion ruining. Where did they come from? Why are they on the outside so fast? Did they not seek shelter during an emission? The Zone is not alive without you, nothing happens without your involvement.

- Performance is incredibly bad. It struggles to process settlements. Somehow, the one at Garbage runs way worse than Rostock. Not only that, but the game seemingly likes to crash at random with no consistency It'll either run fine for hours or you'll have a period of 3 different crashes in a matter of an hour. Regardless of how good your pc is too, apparently. I've seen reports of high end PCs crashing the game. Looks like it's a roll dice whether the game will crash on your system or not.

- The open world gives you way too much bandages and food. If you fully explore 3 different areas, you'll get about 15-20 of every kind of food and about 30 bandages. They are way too plentiful, I already have about 100 bandages and I'm in early game. Finding broken guns to repair them later doesn't seem like it's worth the time and effort, since if you explore the current map, chances are you'll come across a fully repaired gun that you'd want.

- Bugs, bugs, so many bugs. The AI is really bad, though it's an upgrade from the previous titles. Still, only after my 3rd or so encounter with a pack of mutants did I realize that when I'm on a higher elevation, they'll try to take cover behind something. The previous psi-dog that I fought tried to hide behind a very thin pole and I mistook that for the AI just not knowing what to do. But then in the arena fight, the psi-dog didn't move at all for the majority of the fight. Another time I jumped on a truck while some bloodsuckers were after me, then a pack of friendly stalkers spawned next to me and the mutant AI froze too. It let itself get killed by stalkers. Of course there's also npcs half buried into the ground, the lone tire launching you forward, the enemy AI freezing after the cutscene and easily getting killed, the apparently infinite respawn of the military in one of the early game locations, some AI being hostile while others are not (the military is hostile to me, but a few guys apparently won't bother), etc.

- Stealth is garbage in this game. Enemies will see and hear you through building 30 meters away, a night doesn't seem to impact your chances at all. Plus that dreadful anomaly that works on stealth, what a horrible idea.

- Early grenades don't do much unless you plan on spamming them or using them to make someone fall on the ground and quickly kill them. They are extremely underpowered and they really look and sound weak. Just sell them.

- No PDA messages from other stalkers, no updates on the zone, no bestiary, no stalker leaderboard. Again, the game doesn't feel alive, it feels more like a playground that needs you to get interesting, the Zone doesn't exist independently of you and it sucks so bad.

- Seems like there's no night vision anywhere in the game... really?

As it is right now, I can't recommend the game. There are too many issues to ignore and you'll most likely not get a stellar, bug-free experience with a steady performance.

>trapped in a dark, Victorian city

>one of the first notes is noted with $ currency, not the glorious pound

Immersion ruined, negative review. I wanted a grand British experience, all is lost now.
