Total War: Shogun 2 is a turn-based strategy game developed by Creative Assembly and published by Sega released on Windows in 2011 following macOS and Linux in 2015 and 2017. Set in the 16th century Sengoku period of Japanese feudal history, the country split into warring clans that Ten legendary warlords strive for supremacy to rise above all others and emerge as the new Shogun.

Shogun 2 starts with you taking a role of Daimyo, the clanleader. You will have to use military engagements, economics, and diplomacy to increase the power of your own clan, conquer the hostile clans, establish the control over Kyoto and, ultimately become the Shogun.
It features naval and siege battles via land and sea, which became the watermark for the Total war series. Shogun 2 redefined the Total War franchise setting its core values and gameplay. The goal of the game is Expansion and acquisition as you'll need to capture and hold territories in addition to Kyoto to attain victory.

There are two phases of gameplay - During the turn-based strategy mode, you’ll have to engage in diplomacy, manage your clan, your territories and make decisions, and fight in real-time battle mode, in which you’ll lead your armies to victory or humiliating defeat. The game portrays Generals and Agents with unique traits and abilities that the player able to improve as they gain experience. The armies and units organize and move around the campaign map by the player to carry out battles with other clans. The game refines troop variety with infantry, archers, and cavalry as the basic backbone of your army that includes Ashigaru, Samurai, etc. and on development you can unlock Ninjas, Ronins and Monks. You can also adopt Christianity to unlock gunpowder and its weapons like cannon, carracks but results in dishonor and social and religious unrest in your provinces.

Shogun 2 has Special agents feature, for example – you can unlock ‘Ninja’, ‘Metsuke’ or ‘Geisha’ as your secret Assassins or Spies to carry out Assassinations or sabotage an enemy castle’s gates and important production structures to gain the upper hand. It also features ‘Monks ’ that can be used to convert the enemy population. Weather also plays big role in this game, it affects battles as fog greatly reduces visibility, while heavy rain diminishes the effectiveness of missile troops, such as archers or gunners, thus requiring the players to adapt their strategies.

Diplomacy is the key in Shogun 2 during the first few turns. With alliances come serious responsibilities. Attacking an ally is very dishonorable, and while it may gain you the captured cities and its production capabilities, it reduces your Honour, a significant factor contributing to your peoples' happiness and the way other clans perceive you.

Shogun 2 is beautiful and well detailed. The Rotatable campaign map is fully comprehensive, like peasants doing their daily chores and cherry blossoms falling from the trees during spring & autumn. Every Character has a historic Japanese painting type image card that looks gorgeous, and the user interface adorns beautiful Japanese calligraphy.
Shogun 2's armies look fabulous. Each unit-type features incredible levels of detail, even warriors in the same unit often have unique faces and armor and mustaches. In addition to season-specific effects, spectacular individual touches, and splendid texture-work, especially in the rain. The graphics during battles are equally impressive, and the gameplay is excellent with old Japanese type sound effects and a constructive score.

Even after eight years, Total war Shogun 2 still stands as a compelling game that changed the future of Total War series forever. It is the most polished and incredible attention to detail, along with intelligent AI. Truly Shogun 2 is admirable with a more focused experience on the basics, and its grand atmosphere never leaves you hanging. It's truly worthy of being acclaim as the best among the Total War series. I can’t recommend it enough!
