Devil Slot Machine Review

Mechanics
In Devil Marble the playing field is a pachinko board. Monsters are the equivalent of balls falling down, while the pins are the towers defending the pit. Your character is locked to the bottom of the screen and can only move left and right.
Shooting is automatic, but each character has its own projectile. They also scale with different things. For example, the first character scales with the number of towers placed, while another one scales with towers upgraded.
Your main currency in Devil Marble is your health. When a monster reaches the bottom, you lose 1 hp, when you reach 0 the game ends and you have lost. It’s vital not to let any monsters get by you because you use this same HP as payment for buying new towers in the build phase.
The game is split into two phases. The build phase is where you use your HP to buy, upgrade, and improve your board by placing towers. The defense phase (not an official term) is when the enemies start dropping and your towers and characters become active and stop them.
All towers have an ability. These abilities are the main synergies that you will use to create an impeccable defense.
When charged towers release their own attacks. These vary depending on the elemental type of the tower. Fire towers release fireballs, wind towers launch wind arcs, and thunder ones electrocute nearby enemies while ice/water hit everything in a small circle around them.

Variety
One of the most important ideas in modern gaming is replayability. You need something to keep players engaged. In Devil Marble you pick one of 4 different characters with different gameplay styles. You have 4 modes with their bosses, four difficulties per game mode, and 80 towers to choose from. These towers are sorted by the star count (1, 2, 3) or elemental attack they use (wind, fire, ice, etc) or by classes they belong to (ninja towers, angel towers, fairy towers, etc).

Translation
Special thing to note here. The game is made by Chinese developers so some translation errors are understandable, however, having the game have different names is, in my opinion, unacceptable. Another issue is that the game starts in Chinese. There is absolutely no need to have your first launch be in a language you potentially do not know. Luckily there is not much text or story to the game and all the effects and tower abilities are visually distinctive.
An example: the steam page mentions pinball but there is nothing similar to pinball in game. There might be a small relation to the shape of the board, but not nearly enough to make that comparison.

Visuals
The game looks great, every aspect you need to pay attention to is very distinct. All tower stars are highlighted, the pixel art looks amazing, elemental colors are visible, and everything just works great. The background is static so it doesn’t bother you during gameplay. Animations are good looking, but, and this is a strange one, take too long. I don’t know if that’s part of the loading process, but waiting 3-5s multiple times per level for the slow animations can become annoying rather quickly.

Audio
I enjoyed the music, really kept me interested. Sound effects were also top-notch. Bullets charging towers, enemies hitting them, every sound hits the spot just right.
Positives and Negatives
Positives-
  • Very fun and addictive
  • Variety of modes, characters, towers
  • Responsive controls
  • Bug-free (so far)

Negatives-
  • Translating errors
  • Slow and tedious animations
  • Difficulty can be too high for beginners
  • No option to keep desired towers between rounds

Conclusion
Devil Slot Machine is a great game for all fans of the roguelikes and tower defense genre. The pachinko board works and it will keep you engaged for hours. Find your best combination of towers and wreak havoc.
