From a gameplay perspective, it's a ton of fun. It takes the core stealth gameplay of the MGS series and combines it with XCOM type base building and open world sandbox gameplay. There is a clear focus on making the game fun and accessible, and it succeeds in doing that. I would recommend this game to anyone, including those who don't normally enjoy the rest of the MGS story or linear gameplay.

That being said, the story telling suffers A LOT by using the Peace Walker "play on the go" portable formula. Every mission is purposely isolated so you can be able to free roam and go back to motherbase in between missions. There are even "to be continued" messages at the end of some missions that have multiple parts, which completely breaks immersion by having you in the middle of an intense scene one moment and then back inside the helicopter the next. Many missions in the game have very little importance storywise and in the second chapter of the game half of the missions are just the same exact missions you played previously on a higher difficulty with certain conditions. There was supposed to be a third chapter to the game that didn't get the chance to be released, and you can feel that the game suffers in the second half - relying on you to grind through side ops or replay old missions before unlocking new ones to arbitrarily extend the length of an already long game.

The game feels so radically different from all the other MGS games (outside of Peace Walker) in the way it's presented. Whether that's a good or bad thing is up to you.

The game is really boring and repetitive. It's a free hack and slash game that feels like a simplified God of War. You have a light attack and heavy attack to combo with as well as a handful of spells that have long cooldowns. The online aspect of the game comes into play with the blessing/curse system. Other players are visible walking around as souls, much like the online aspect of Demon's Souls/Dark Souls. You can interact with these players by using what are called "Crusade spells." These spells range from giving timed bonuses to stats or xp to the player or simply griefing them by sending monsters into their world for no personal benefit.

The game is ultimately single player. Dull combat and a dull story makes for a dull game. It's free though, so there's no harm in trying the game.

The game is already a classic, I was just worried about the port considering there has been another not-so-good port released recently (I'm looking at you, FFXIII.) It turns out there wasn't anything to worry about, as both the game itself and the port are much better than FFXIII.

Keyboard and Mouse support, button remapping, graphics/resolution options, and all the other makings of a good port. The only downsides appear to be that there is no mouse support in the in-game menus. It's not really a huge deal and the mouse is fully functional when it matters in the game. The other issue my friend and I have both shared is crashing after returning from headquarters for the first time. I'm not sure if it's just coincidence or something causes the crash, but it was incredibly annoying to go back and do things over again because of the lack of an auto-save feature. Remember to save often.

A rhythm based roguelike might seem like a ridiculous idea, but this game is actually tons of fun. The amazing soundtrack will make retrying the brutally hard difficulty of later stages not feel like a chore and the gameplay brings a more interactive hands-on addition to roguelikes.

It's a 4X game. If you've played Age of Wonders, Fallen Enchantress, Warlock, or other games of the genre you've already played this game. It doesn't really bring anything new to the table, and while that isn't inherently bad -- the things it does are executed better in other games of the same genre.

Very poor AI, a basic and repetetive quest system, and only 3 units and heroes per faction makes the game seem rushed and bare-bones.

Really overlooked game. If you can get over the fact that the game is pretty dated, it's a game that you shouldn't miss out on playing at least once.

Probably the largest disappointment of a game I've ever bought (pre-ordered immediately, even). The engine is clunky and terribly optimized, movement mechanics and major parts of NS have been removed, and the balance is questionable at best.

One of my favorite RPG's of all time. It's got the feel of the old infinity engine classics without the graphics being terribly dated.
