Mixed reviews should be a thing.

While ultimately a pretty decent game, Subnautica: Below Zero completely fails to both understand and capture the initial appeal of the first game, for which a letting go of the original sound designer and the leaving of the original writer are to blame.

Below Zero tries to fill the strong sense of isolation on an uncaring alien planet, which was part of what made the original game feel so harrowing, with as much noise as possible. The writing itself varies between decently entertaining or engaging, and borderline attrocious. The world and creature designs too vary between pretty interesting ideas and things that make early concept art blush. Everything in the world is atleast partially lit too, and that to an excessive degree. It is like they tried to get the core of what makes the original Subnautica so memorable backwards.


If you liked the first game, get this one on a sale.

Sense of isolation, uncertainty and respect of the unknown, absolutely captivating music and atmosphere, clever writing in both story and dia-/monologue, general uniqueness..



..a jewel in it's own right.

If the ocean or the unknown interests you or even if you just like sci-fi and think this title looks interesting, buy it in a heartbeat. Yes, it is that good.

Great Viking themed survival fun, alone or with other people.


The world is pretty and the progression meaty.

It is not nostalgia speaking when I say that the old and original artstyle was much more befitting for the game. Some animation changes feel worse, too.

That being said, Purple Lamp Studios did mostly a good job here. The expanded upon conversational animations feel sweet and they captured the contextual humor well with them.


Overall it is a small miracle that Battle for Bikini Bottom (despite it's success in 2003 and onward) even got a remaster at all.



Battle of Bikini Bottom in it's essence offers - in both original console version and this remaster - an amazing time.




Overall I'm damn pleased.

A game by Ace Combat fans, for Ace Combat fans, funded by Ace Combat fans.

So you wanna be a pirate, matey?

Good action-survival horror. Unfortunately quite a bit short.

Get it on a sale.

Halo on Steam.

Charming and adorable platformer.

A masterpiece.
