The phrase "literally unplayable" gets thrown around a lot, usually as a joke, but this DLC is, quite literally, unplayable. My group played several rounds tonight, and every single time we have gotten soft-locked at one of the new bosses. The boss battle music starts, there is a cutscene, there is a visual effect, but nothing spawns in and nothing happens. We just have to quit the run. I normally have a VERY high tolerance for unfinished games (I played Darktide when it came out too, and despite being in a similarly unfinished state I still had fun.) but I draw the line at a game not letting you progress past a certain point due to a bug. This is *LITERALLY* unplayable, and should not have been released in this state. Do not spend your money on this disaster of a DLC until Gearbox gets their act together and fixes it.

It's a short visual novel, and for an April fools game it is better than it has any right to be. I kinda want to see the team that made this do more stuff like it.

It's a fun game and I do like it, but I have some seriously mixed feelings about recommending it to anyone who doesn't have a high tolerance for ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

tl;dr: This game was not ready for launch. You should go into it expecting a lot of bugs, crashing, graphical issues, rough edges, and extreme aggravation with an unstable/glitchy anti-cheat.

Today is December 1st, 2022; it is one day after the official launch of the game, and I believe it needed a lot more time in development before the full release. The numerous promised features in game that are listed as "coming soon" are disappointing, but ultimately inconsequential to me--however what I find aggravating are the myriad of performance issues, as well as how prone this game is to some of the same crashes and bugs found in the beta. (And then there is the highly unstable and overly aggressive anti-cheat, but I'll get to that later...)

For example, if you want to speedrun closing the game, just click on a bunch of different options in a shop too quickly. ("Too quickly" being defined as "not leaving 1 or more second between choices".) This happens to everyone I've played with, to the point where it's become a running joke with a squadmate of mine who will do this to close the game because it's quicker than selecting "quit game" from the menu and then staring at the frozen menu screen for two minutes while the game does who-knows-what in the background until it finally closes. (And no, he's not running this on a toaster. He's got an expensive, brand new PC running a 3080ti with 128gb of ram and a very powerful CPU.) And even when they are behaving normally, menus often feel sluggish and slow.

There are very noticeable graphical issues with anti-aliasing, shadows, and god-rays--and for some reason larger structures in the background tend to "meld into reality" depending on the angle you look at them. (Not sure how to describe this; it's like opening a 3d model and then zooming in real close and turning it around until some sections fade from view--as if the model is bisected.)

Gameplay-wise, there are many tweaks that I believe should be made. For example, specials can just... spawn in spots that do not make sense. For instance: in a recent game I was checking a tiny side room with no other exits and no furnishings save for a small desk in the corner. Then, the moment I turned my back a Trapper spawned directly behind me while I was still in the room. Just teleported behind me and said "nothin personnel kid" while I wasn't looking. Not sure if this is a bug, but if you play long enough it happens often enough that it becomes pretty annoying.

Then there is the anti-cheat. Easy Anti Cheat is a perfect argument against nominative determinism, because it's anything but easy to deal with. EAC is unstable and overly aggressive; I've had it take issue with programs like Discord, Nvidia GeForce Launcher, and even Microsoft ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Paint.

But even if it doesn't decide to be picky about what software you're running, sometimes one of its files will get corrupted and then the game will refuse to launch. You'll get a cryptic error message (Usually "30004" or "30005") and you won't be provided with any helpful information in the crash log. If you click the "find solutions online" button from the crash dialogue, it will just dump you on to the main page of EAC's website and you'll have to navigate through menus it to figure out what's wrong--you can't search by the error code they give you!

If you google the code, you'll find that Fatshark has a "how to fix errors" page on their website that's more helpful--but for 30004 and 30005 they basically throw their hands up and go "EAC is corrupt, try restoring windows to a previous version." That, or, manually disabling all your startup processes and re-enabling them one by one to see if one is affecting EAC. But don't do this, that's not the problem with these errors. What's happening is that a file in the EAC folder is corrupt and won't write to itself.

So logically, you should just re-install EAC right? Well, I have news for you: you can't re-download it from EAC's website. You need to get it the setup.exe for EAC from Darktide's instillation files--and that file Fatshark provides you with does not work. You can double click on it to run the setup, but nothing will happen. No window will open, no new process will start, nothing. It's supposed to run an installation wizard type of window, but that doesn't happen.

If you delete EAC's files in hopes that it will notice something is missing and re-download the affected file, it won't. Instead, when you launch the game the launcher will say "Easy Anti Cheat is not installed." then close out. Do note, this is not a Fatshark problem--this is an Epic Games problem, since they are the ones who code and maintain Easy Anti Cheat. Emailing Fatshark won't help you here.

HOWEVER. After several hours praying to the machine spirit for guidance, the Omnissiah took pity on me and I found a solution for error 30004 and 30005. I cannot guarantee that this will work on your system, but here is what worked for me specifically:
  1. Navagate to EAC's installation folder. (NOT Darktide's) This is usually located at C:\Program Files (x86)\EasyAntiCheat_EOS
(NOTE: If you have older games that used EAC like Vermintide 2, you will have two folders in "Program Files (x86)"--Darktide uses the one that has "EOS" at the end. This stands for "Epic Online Services"; if you go into the system manager, the one Darktide uses it will be labeled with "Epic Online Services" in parenthesis.)
  2. You will see two files: "EasyAntiCheat_EOS.exe" and "EasyAntiCheat_EOS.sys". Rename the .sys file to something similar; like "EasyAntiCheat_Pieceofshit.sys"
  3. Launch the game. NOW it should remake that corrupted file and run normally. If it doesn't, you can change the .sys file's name back and pray to the machine god more because clearly there is something else wrong.

So yeah. Fun game, but it needed a lot more time in the oven.

This is easily one of the best RPGs I've ever played.
  • The writing is fantastic.
  • All the characters ooze personality and feel like real people.
  • The voice-acting is phenomenal. Easily the best I've ever heard in a game.
  • The setting is a perfect mixture of grim dystopia and retro-futurism; it reminds me of the work Viktor Antonov did for Half Life 2 and Dishonored.
  • The absolute mad men behind this game went out of their way to hand paint the environments and character textures, leading to a visually consistent art style unlike anything I've ever seen in a game. The whole world is rendered in this raw, gestural art style with bold, thick brush strokes and gritty environments. There's even a massive surrealist painting that makes up all of the nightmarish imagery for your various "thoughts." (Mechanically, these are similar to "perks" in other games like New Vegas.)
  • The character progression mechanics are a refreshing take on the genre, with the 24 "Skills" and "Thought Cabinet" feeling new, unique, and fun.
  • Kim.

10/10, would spin-kick a fascist in the face again.

I was on the fence about this game, but then I saw that it had a demo so I tried it out... and bought it immediately. It's a fun, well written game with good voice acting and great visuals. (Also, this is exactly why more games need to offer demos.)

Virgin Nintendo: If you even think about making fan games or rom-hacks you will face the unbridled wrath of their legal team.

Chad Sega: Hires modders to port games to modern systems, and then turns them loose to create an entirely new game.

Genesis still does what Nintendon't.

This game is very whimsical, and the story is very dreamlike; it has its own internal logic, and it doesn't spend time holding your hand to explain it to you. The cactus writes in a diary after you talk to him, and that's just the way things are. You also aren't some "chosen one" like many other JRPGs--instead, you're just this random drifter that shows up in other people's stories. (Until towards the end where you are someone very important.) I don't think anyone even said my character's name until many hours into the story; if this were any other game, you would be an NPC. I love this--it makes the world feel a lot more real and less tailor made towards a video game protagonist.

This game is also somehow very simple yet deceptively complex. It strips away a lot of the standard JRPG mechanics/systems that its peers at the time relied on (healing items, usable items, inventory management, etc.) but at the same time there are systems/mechanics just under the surface that are insanely complex. (Forging/Tempering specifically. There are entire 20+ page guides on GameFAQs just dedicated to specific facets of these systems--people have even made programs that help you simulate weapon/armor synthesis combinations for optimal results.) You can choose to sink hundreds of hours into forging the most amazing weapon in the game, but you can also choose to just ignore all that and beat the game. (On your first playthrough at least. Once you are on New Game+ and crank the difficulty up to Nightmare you should really start looking into item creation.)

I really liked this game, and I'm glad I finally got around to playing it after 20+ years.

This game does so many things right, and it's very clear that the developers put a lot of love into it.

I remember first playing this game back in the early 2000s on ZSNES with the fan translation patch. It's one of my favorite JRPGs, and I am so glad it got such a quality remake. It captures the original's set pieces, tone, and energy beat for beat; no unneeded changes to the story or aesthetic to make it more "edgy" or modern. The biggest change is to the combat, which feels great.

THIS is how you do a remake. I hope Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy VI will get this treatment some day.
