"Sir, this place is dead. Whatever happened here, I think we missed it." - Sgt. Apone (Aliens - 1986)

A great game but the playerbase is unfortunately pretty vacant.

It's worth playing with a couple of friends if you're a fan of the movie Aliens, but once you've played through the campaign once, and went for a few rounds on the survival mode that is unlocked upon the campaign's completion, it doesn't offer much else currently.

Highlights: Blasting xenos. Satisfying gameplay. Immersive sound design. Various classes along with a decent selection of weapons with a variety of upgrades. A serviceable story (Better appreciated by those that are familiar with the lore/movies/novels).

Flaws: No VoIP (Use Discord). No text chat. AI co-op partners are terrible. No Crossplay. Awful matchmaking feature that throws in AI partners after 20 seconds of no one joining. (Especially bad now that the playerbase is so low).

It's worth noting that there is a roadmap of planned gameplay updates at no extra cost, so hopefully that breathes new life back into the game. Fingers crossed.

Phasmophobia was groundbreaking when it launched. A fresh, tense, and immersive co-op horror experience. During the lockdown years, it was a standout title where I met some interesting people and had unforgettable memories, and I’ll always appreciate it for that.

That said, I’m disappointed with the current state of the game. My issue isn’t with the core gameplay loop; investigating and identifying ghosts is fine. The problem is the lack of meaningful variety, especially considering how long the game has been in development. Since the 2023 Ascension update, progression feels unrewarding. To level up and unlock better gear, you need to correctly identify ghosts, which encourages learning their quirks. However, unlocking better gear since then is a slow, repetitive grind, relying on the same tired methods that sorely need a revamp. While the game gets significantly easier with the good gear, you're now faced with using it to keep doing more of the same.

This brings me to the much-needed, elusive Horror 2.0 update, which promises a complete rework of ghost and game mechanics. Originally slated for a 2024/2025 release, it has now been pushed to 2026. Overall content releases have been pretty sparse, with the exception of uninspired seasonal events and the odd bug fix. Considering the game has sold over 20 million copies, which is an incredible feat for an indie title, it's embarrassing that we’re still expected to wait so long for meaningful updates. Development shifted to a console port, which is a worthwhile expansion, but it came at the expense of the early supporters who helped make the game's success possible. Additionally, they've focused on revamping old 'asset store' maps, which, while necessary, feels more like busywork than real progress. Hopefully, the customisable character models expected later this year will be enough to keep players interested until the next major update, whenever that happens.

Phasmophobia helped define a genre, but many of the games it inspired have now surpassed it in content and execution. I don’t regret the time I spent with it, as it got me through tough times, but I can’t recommend it in its current form. It's a stark reminder that early access is always a gamble and even massive success doesn’t guarantee meaningful progress.

Chances are, I’ll revisit the game sometime in the future when something significant happens.

The game itself is great. Arguably the most ambitious game they have created to date.

However, I cannot currently recommend it for multiple reasons.

I decided to wait for the Steam release, due to reports of the game being riddled with bugs and other issues. Although the wait really didn't make much difference.

Regardless of the fact I can typically run it on a mixture of high/ultra settings @70-90FPS (1080Ti / i7 8700k), I still encounter the ERR_GFX_STATE crash, and the proposed workaround does absolutely nothing to remedy it.

Another known issue I encounter is a weird smudging effect with objects in the distance, and with hair/beards. After a bit of searching online, I've deduced this could well be an issue with the Anti-aliasing (TAA in particular). It's not as noticable on higher resolutions, but it's still something that should be addressed.

While the game is now "serviceable", it still runs like ♥♥♥♥ for a lot of others, even after several patches with R* insisting the game is fixed.

Is this really the acceptable standard for AAA titles on PC? Surely not.

To add insult to injury, a week after it released on Steam, the game is now on sale @ -20% for the standard edition & -25% for the Special and Ultimate editions.

Apparently this is how R* treats the Steam user base. If it wasn't for the fact I'm over the 2hr mark, I'd consider getting a refund, and waiting for some optimisation and a more appropriate price tag.

Like I said, it's a great game, but I would hold off until they resolve the current issues, and perhaps wait for a big sale.

Nice visual, UI and general QoL upgrades.

Watching enemy buildings collapse is really satisfying!

Steppe Lancers are seriously OP!

The most fun I've had on an online survival game. A great game to play with friends.

Running into toxic players is inevitable, as it comes with the territory, but if you are familiar with this type of game, you shouldn't let it ruin your experience. Take the time to learn the base building and survival basics, and take it from there.

If you're new to this kind of game, it would be advisable spending some time on a PVE server, before diving into the deep end.

Also, as noted in the recommended system requirements, An SSD is highly recommended, otherwise you could be waiting a while to get into a server.

Hollow Knight was my Game of the Year in 2017, and for good reason.

While the Metroidvania genre has become crowded, Hollow Knight sets a gold standard with its stunning hand-drawn world, rich atmosphere, and phenomenal soundtrack. The game's melancholic, derelict tone is balanced by moments of charm and playfulness, creating an unforgettable experience.

Combat is fluid and satisfying, with tight controls and challenging yet fair boss fights that reward patience and skill—much like Dark Souls. Exploration feels meaningful, constantly encouraging you to push forward, uncover secrets, and meet a cast of memorable characters. The upgrades and abilities you discover add depth to both traversal and combat, making progression feel natural and rewarding.

If you're a fan of deep, immersive worlds and tight gameplay, Hollow Knight is an absolute must-play.

One of the best roguelites out there and one of my favourite games of all time, The Binding of Isaac blends dark storytelling with Zelda-style dungeon crawling, body horror, RNG, and chaotic bullet-hell action.

Each run is unique, with procedurally generated floors, a massive variety of enemies, bosses, and secrets, plus risk/reward mechanics that keep things unpredictable. The vast pool of items and power-ups creates wild synergies—some making you unstoppable, others sabotaging your run entirely.

The depth, replayability, and sheer unpredictability make it an addictive experience.
If this sounds like your kind of chaos, don’t hesitate—it's a must-play!
