This is such a great horror game, with a lot of genuinely scary moments! It has a very suspenseful atmosphere, and a building sense of urgency as you work your way through the task of identifying the ghost and completing other objectives, especially as the ghost gets more and more pissed off.

You start with some basic tools (flashlights, EMF readers, Thermometers, Spiritboxes etc) but after a number of successful hunts and some leveling, you can purchase a range of more advanced tools, to make your job easier.

The game perfectly encapsulates the vibe from those ghost hunting shows, with the radio communication between the team, and the ability to communicate with the ghosts using voice recognition. I highly recommend using in-game voice comms as opposed to Discord, for the full experience.

It's great playing with your friends, and in my experience it's definitely worth mixing things up by playing with randoms, as with different teams comes an element of unpredictability resulting in a different playstyle/experience. So far I've met some cool people and it's been an absolute blast!

I look forward to continuing to play as the game develops and grows. I highly recommend the game to anyone interested in the co-op horror genre.

The game itself is great. Arguably the most ambitious game they have created to date.

However, I cannot currently recommend it for multiple reasons.

I decided to wait for the Steam release, due to reports of the game being riddled with bugs and other issues. Although the wait really didn't make much difference.

Regardless of the fact I can typically run it on a mixture of high/ultra settings @70-90FPS (1080Ti / i7 8700k), I still encounter the ERR_GFX_STATE crash, and the proposed workaround does absolutely nothing to remedy it.

Another known issue I encounter is a weird smudging effect with objects in the distance, and with hair/beards. After a bit of searching online, I've deduced this could well be an issue with the Anti-aliasing (TAA in particular). It's not as noticable on higher resolutions, but it's still something that should be addressed.

While the game is now "serviceable", it still runs like ♥♥♥♥ for a lot of others, even after several patches with R* insisting the game is fixed.

Is this really the acceptable standard for AAA titles on PC? Surely not.

To add insult to injury, a week after it released on Steam, the game is now on sale @ -20% for the standard edition & -25% for the Special and Ultimate editions.

Apparently this is how R* treats the Steam user base. If it wasn't for the fact I'm over the 2hr mark, I'd consider getting a refund, and waiting for some optimisation and a more appropriate price tag.

Like I said, it's a great game, but I would hold off until they resolve the current issues, and perhaps wait for a big sale.

Nice visual, UI and general QoL upgrades.

The most fun I've had on an online survival game. A great game to play with friends.

Running into toxic players is inevitable, as it comes with the territory, but if you are familiar with this type of game, you shouldn't let it ruin your experience. Take the time to learn the base building and survival basics, and take it from there.

If you're new to this kind of game, it would be advisable spending some time on a PVE server, before diving into the deep end.

Also, as noted in the recommended system requirements, An SSD is highly recommended, otherwise you could be waiting a while to get into a server.

2 Steps Forward / 8 Steps Back: The Game

Hollow Knight is my GOTY in 2017.

Sure, there is an oversaturation of Metroidvania's of late, but Team Cherry [developer] have raised the bar so high that all of those upcoming titles in the genre will be compared to this game.

Hollow Knight is a beautifully hand drawn masterpiece of a game with a massive, rich varied world that is dripping with ambience and is coated in a sombre derelict tone (that never outstays it's welcome). There are glints of light-hearted playfulness scattered throughout, and it has one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard in a game. Seriously!

The controls are tight and combat is fluid and satisfying. There is platforming, that never feels frustrating or without purpose. There is a massive varied catalog of enemies, including many boss battles that are challenging, but never seem unfair, and the rewarding feeling you get when you've learned the attack patterns and finally defeated a boss is comparable to Dark Souls.

The game gives you a huge sense of progression, urging you to push forward and keep exploring every nook and cranny it has to offer. In doing so you will encounter an abundance of colourful characters that serve to assist, enlighten and amuse you. Along with many upgrades, trinkets and collectables scattered throughout the world, granting you new abilities that aid you in meeting new challenges, adapting to new environments and finding new ways to traverse the world.

If this floats your boat, do yourself a favour and buy this game. You won't be disappointed!

This is without a doubt, one of the best games of the “Roguelite” genre. It combines a dark and disturbing story with gameplay akin to the top-down Legend of Zelda titles also including elements of body horror, RNG, dark and lowbrow humour, gambling, and occasional bullet-hell.

The bare bones of the gameplay involve exploring the floors of a random-generated dungeon, killing monsters in each room, collecting various items to aid in your travels and unique pick-ups that may alter your appearance and grant you new abilities. At the end of each floor you’ll face a boss, and upon defeating each boss, you can reap your reward and descend to the next floor. Lather, rinse, repeat.

The gameplay starts off fairly simple but the deeper you delve into it, the more complex it becomes with the addition of the enormous variety of pick-ups, unlockables, enemies/bosses, shops, treasure rooms, devil rooms, angel rooms, various risk/reward rooms, hidden rooms and many other secrets within the game. Every run is guaranteed to be a different experience and this only adds to the game’s near-endless replay value (I should also add that it is worth picking up the “Afterbirth” DLC as it adds so much more great content to the game).

One thing worth noting is the importance of item/pick-up synergies. You will find many pick-ups as you progress through the game; a lot of which have interesting results when combined. You could potentially become very over-powered, but it’s also worth noting that not every pick-up has positive effects. It’s possible you could find something that gives you negative traits, ruins a good pick-up synergy or inflicts a handicap upon you, potentially ruining your run. You’ll get better at judging which items to avoid and which make for great combinations. Oh and of course if the RNG gods are feeling generous.

If you like the sound of all that, then I highly recommend purchasing the game. You won’t be disappointed!
