I'm a massive Portal fan and recently played Portal Stories: Mel to completion. While that mod was released 9 years ago, I believe it took the concept of a Portal game and tinkered with it to create a new and interesting story. Ever since then I've loved Portal more than ever.

When I saw that a new Portal 2 mod was coming out in early 2024 I couldn't wait to get my hands on it and play it to completion (at least the main story mode). After playing through Portal: Revolution I was blown away at the fact that a small team of creative developers was able to do so much using the Portal IP.

Spoilers past this point, I urge you to try out the game before reading more. You have been warned.

Story
While I find the story of Portal: Revolution a little cheesy with a companion becoming the main antagonist and all, I still found it fun and engaging. The two core characters you meet along your journey are both unique and interesting in their own ways. While I found Stirling to be a bit annoying at times and eventually even infuriating to listen to, I still believe his character as a simple core just trying to get the facility back up and running again is explored decently. He was a loyalist and worked during GLaDOS' reign over the facility, after she was dismantled he felt lost and didn't know what to do. He talks to the player during the story about how his friends went missing, self destructed or were lost like he was. While most players may feel his end goal will end up being malicious to them, the idea that a core would want to go back to their old life, working under GLaDOS and receiving orders to help the facility run smoothly (especially since Stirling seems like he had a decent job as a core) isn't too far fetched.

The other core you meet in the game is Emilia Conly. She is a former Aperture employee whose brain was scanned and eventually given to a core after she passed away. She is by far my favourite character and I thought Sarah Jacklin did a wonderful job voicing her. She shares many interests and goals of the player and provides a new outlook on what it's like behind the scenes at Aperture. She eventually helps you beat the final boss (Stirling and his big old teleportation machine) and (after the credits) gives you a kind but ominous message, describing what happened after you destroyed the machine. This also sets up for a potential add on or sequel in the future.

Overall, the plot of the story and the way you traverse through it is fine, it isn't anything outstanding but I still found myself invested heavily into what's happening. There are numerous references and call backs to Portal and even Half-Life which, as an avid fan of both series, I quite enjoyed seeing.

Gameplay
The gameplay follows the same formulae Valve used for Portal 2, often introducing new mechanics for the player to figure out on their own and going through several tests using the mechanics in new and different ways. I felt like the level designers did a great job with introducing the player to the new mechanics and walking them through different ways of using them. All test tracks have markings on the floors and walls in significant places to signify what you need to do, this can help guide newer or confused players to the right solution. My only complaint is there weren't more levels. My favourite chapter was Chapter 7, The "linked" laser cubes provide a whole new level of depth to how chambers can be designed and it was a treat figuring out the right way to solve each level. It's a shame that a lot of the mechanics didn't reappear in the later levels, I would've loved more usage of the gel cleansing fluid to create dynamic levels where you (for example) intentionally gel a cube and use momentum built on it's bounces to send it flying through a gel cleanser so it lands on the other side of a gap safe and sound.

Overall though, the level design was creative and expressive, it explored all different mechanics to different degrees of success and I again, just wish I could play more levels exploring the new mechanics.

Environments and Scenery
The environments in this game are beautiful. I genuinely couldn't stop taking screenshots. I love that almost every chapter is a different area, it gives your brain a little dopamine hit and makes you feel like you're actually progressing. The primary concern I have with a lot of Portal maps and mods is that it would end up being the same test chamber areas, creating a mind numbing experience where you just solve puzzles with nothing interesting to look at or take in but after playing Portal: Revolution, I was relieved to see all the different environments and breathtaking scenery (especially since this game is built on a modified source engine, it's very impressive that the developers were able to make such a scenic experience).

Conclusion
To Conclude, Portal: Revolution is a wonderful, free Portal 2 mod that I highly recommend to anyone who is a fan of puzzle games and/or the Portal IP. It was a treat to play another Portal based experience that was so beautifully hand crafted and I look forward to completing the game again on a second playthrough.

so you're in a chamber and there is a cube, the cube says "i was made by cave johnson" to then you say no you weren't. you were made by the remains of robots and a squid monster, and then you proceed to throw it into a pit of acid and it burns.
