The game freezes after the two logo screens (Sand Sailor and Thunderful) and will sit blank indefinitely. Any input causes the "Program is not responding" to appear, and closes the game. I tried every possible fix listed by the developers and other users who are also experiencing the issue and nothing worked. I was going to wait for the next update, but they delayed it which would leave it outside Steam's 14 day refund policy.

I submitted a bug report both through steam and on the forums the day i bought this (Oct 4) and ten days later there hasn't been so much as a "received" message to my report. As such I am refunding the game and giving a negative review. If a free weekend comes up i may try it again, but i will not be purchasing this game without proof the issue has been fixed and devs arent just another one off abusing the early access tag.

I have been playing ASE since my cousing bought it on the 360 back in high school. We put hundreds of hours into split screening it when Island was the only map and Redwoods didnt exist yet. We played it on the XB1, and i bought it on PC to keep playing it after we went our seperate ways. So trust me when i say i was among the loudest of hype train conductors for ASA, and when i tell you to buy ASE instead of ASA.

Wildcard took 3 steps forward and two large steps back while making ASA, and the scales have unfortunately tipped more in the favor of ASE despite ASE's own flaws. Despite no longer having developer support, many modders jumping ship completely, and its long present issues, ASE is the better choice right now, and i will explain:
ASA is GORGEOUS. The problems arise when a brand new 4090 in a beast of a build literally cannot run the game on ultra, and most systems are chugging in the caves at only 1x spawn rates. Ive been playing ASE on an RX580 for nearly a decade, and now have a 6900XT and even if i overhauled my entire build to maximize the efficiency of that Devil card, it wouldnt be able to run ASA on medium settings. So looking great is entirely dismissable when such a minute percentage of players can experience that noticable upgrade in textures. Ultimately, you will run ASA on low, even minimal, and the only difference to ASE will be a few close up textures, and long distance textures/rendering.

Gameplay. ASA tried to improve in many areas, making many mods like Structures+ and ARK Additions base game inclusions. The issue is that they kept making mistakes. Most of the "new" dinos were not technically made by wildcard, but copied from various mods in ASE, though admittedly most have confirmed to have given permission or even sold the models to Wildcard. The problem is nearly all these new dinos are in a paywalled DLC that costs just as much as ASE does when not on sale ($30), BUT if you dont buy the DLC, then these dinos are still wandering around your ARKs with a giant bubble over them telling you "Please purchase DLC to tame this dino". Worse still is theyve also added an AIRSHIP to Abberation, the map literally DESIGNED from SQUARE ONE to not allow flyers in any way.
And you've likely heard the pyromane memes, the TLDR is that for $5 you were given a SUPER OP dino that destroyed PvP balance and once sales dipped, it was nerfed to be less useful than its base game counterpart the Shadowmane.

Wildcard has also seen fit to meddle with player choices by removing several features from the menus, including the OPTION to allow flyer speed levelling, and have made many pvp and/or pve centric features non-toggleable. Add on that many sandbox options such as force allowing flyers into caves, and buildings inside POIs, are also gone, and certain items have also been left out of the remake, such as cryo pods, which i cannot stress enough some boss terminals are extremely difficult to guide 20 boss fighters to even in small groups, and even with ASA's improved AI and pathfinding. Oh, all those options also are no longer able to be tweaked directly in the .ini file and they dont give them to you in singleplayer either, so by the way i hope you enjoyed those single digit levels on The Island because they're here to stay unless someone can make a mod to bypass the dev's """patch""" to """level spawn manipulation"""

And ultimately, the most prominent issue in ASA is the complete lack of care from Wildcard. Day 1 bugs are still present, the game has not been made more stable by any metric, with many creators outright refusing quite publicly to make ASA content BECAUSE the game truly does crash THAT MUCH.
How bad is the game? ♥♥♥ is selling gifts for $60 and global keys for $80. There arent even more than 10 people selling copies of this game because nobody wants it.

Do yourself a favor, buy ASE and hope that Wildcard doesnt pull a Bethesda and nuke the mods and ruin the game's core code over a year after ending developer support. Or pull ASE from shops like Oldrim to force people to buy the re-re-re-re-re-re-re-release.

Saw the recent mixed reviews and idk whats going on but the game is exactly what it sells itself as: a survival crafter simulator set in the "endless" ocean with random islands for scavenging. Does it get repetitive, even boring after a few playthroughs? Yes. Is it pretty basic in its scope and mechanics? Yes. Is it a little... meh for a 2022 release with its graphics? Perhaps.

But the game is EXTREMELY stable and runs buttery smooth 100% of the time, even on my old RX 580 card. The gameplay loop is satisfying, and the side content is there for those who look for it. Sure, the islands are pretty same-y and most of this game is surface level, but the game is exactly what it wants to be: a pure form survival-crafter simulator. For $20 as a FULL PRICE you are getting a solid minimum of 10 hours of fun imho. Get it on sale for $10 and you cannot be mad about this being in your library. Hell, in honesty to me this is a better buy than RAFT, which only got as big as it did thanks to its creator sponsorship deals. Stranded Deep didnt buy out any creators or streamers, and let the game sell itself, which i respect.

IDEK if i paid for the game or got it as a free thing in early access, but the game was like a bad gmod ripoff of STALKER- except it did have some potential. Watched it for a while to see no updates, no dev responses and as of january 15, 2023, the devs intentionally shut down the servers and the last note was that it was just another outage and "we're working on it"

steam needs to improve the early access and beta ToS to stop developers from doing these quick cash grabs and ripping people off; We are all getting extremely sick and tired of it.

I must've died at least 50 times in my first 10 hours, but i cant put the game down. The loop is just so damn satisfying and i mean hell, game has been out for over 5 years i think and devs are still making huge FREE updates regularly and support modding.

Def worth the full price of admission, the custom sandbox options allow you to make it anything from a ruthless hardcore survival sim to a casual run and gun zombie grinder. Runs fantastic, never crashed even once during my playtime thus far.

Now THIS is how you do a remake my friends; the story, characters and themes are completely unchanged; anything that was changed was done to make it better, such as the no instant death from touching water.
Keeping the OG voicing was a huge positive imo, it brings back sooo much nostalgia and love from the old days, and the graphics are just wonderful. They're not groundbreaking but they really do turn this game into what we can imagine the original devs of Pandemic wanted to do here, and the way the art style perfects the OG satirical style is just a huge cherry on top.

Not just that, but no forced requirements or transactions either. No paying for anything, the ENTIRE GAME is available to you from the box, and its not even full priced. It's half the price of a modern game and its by far, at least 200x better than anything released in the last 5 years. Well worth the $30 if you were a fan of the OG games, and if you werent then likely you arent from our time and you're going to miss a LOT of the references, jokes and gags during the scanning and commentary/narration segments. The modernized cutscenes arent over the top and you can see the cracks, such as tank treads not moving, but man is this such a great piece of gaming history.

i am extremely hyped for these guys to remake DAH 2 and potentially even continue the story, easily the best remake of a game i have EVER played or seen with my own eyes.

Def buy it on sale, well worth the $30 otherwise. This isnt a 6 hour PS2 title this game will keep you coming back over and over for the gags, story and free roaming fun that modern games just have no freaking clue how to pull off anymore.

This game is fun for about 5 or 6 hours, then its cracks begin to show.
The best comparison anyone can use here is the Mad Max game, because this is literally Mad Max game but improved in MOST ways. The devs took everything that was great about RAGE 1 and through it out the window. The great characters, immersive and intriguing world, the mystery of being a relic of the past? All gone. Its a generic good guy fights really bad guy to save the world, most NPCs are uninteresting and uninspired, hell half of them are a poor man's copy of good characters from the last game. The weapons are both new and garbage, the only good addition being the railgun which fills the sniper role. You also get an assault rifle literally in the first 10 minutes so i dont understand why they give you the pistol at all, and theres no progression in weapons so the AR can be made your endgame weapon with 3 upgrades to the AP ammo.
Driving is IMMENSELY better now, but you only get two vehicles, and while you can "collect" vehicles, literally none of them have anything to offer. Half of them are just skins over existing vehicles, like all four bikes use the exact same model. The engine sounds are bland and boring, like i want to be driving a beefy supercharged V8 here not my mum's grocery wagon.
The convoys were ripped straight from Mad Max and it shows, try using anything but the OP rangermobile and youll just die, use rangermobile and its a cakewalk. Your super smart car will auto aim at weakspots for you, which is just plain insulting, and the world is big and open but lifeless. All enemies are just reskins of each other, the towns are bland and boring and the world fails to pull you in like in the first game.
However there is still some good. The game as just a generic shooter excels. The weapons arent anything special but the movement is very fluid and the super powers you get make the combat extremely fun and engaging. The story sucks camel D, but it can surprise you from time to time, and the driving, while not as rewarding in the first game driving that monster V10, is actually serviceable.
Oh yea, and racing is no longer part of the game. Its 100% optional, i think you have to do it exactly one time, takes like 4-5 minutes tops, and thats it. Bit of a shame bc you can tell they put zero effort into the world around racing apart from the one NPC and the first race, but expected given the reaction to racing in the first game.
Some of the side quests can be pretty challenging before you get decked out in all this gear and get the better weapons, that sand worm gave me a good run until i came back with all the guns and abilities and shrekt it.

Final Score: 5/10, pretty average experience that murders the name of the first game to come off as ultimately an uninspired mainstream experience.
But hey i got it 60% off, and thats what i'd recommend you do. Its not the worst buy for $20-30

First up: Voice acting. The VAs did a great job here but its the editing that butchers it. All the line sound very sped up and like they have a filter on them, whenever the italian actors are speaking you can hear the audio become warbly and wig out. The only actor to not do this is Karl, because he is the ONLY voice to not be sped up in cutscenes. idfk what happened here but listening to the cutscenes is hard with how awful the audio is when anyone-but-karl is talking.
Its fun and enjoyable start to finish (mostly), especially with the new wave defense mode. As per usual, the difficulty is nicely balanced, the game is pleasant to look at and Karl is our favorite sneaky sniper badass.
But, this game has so many flaws. The maps are terrible. Most of these maps are IMMENSE in size, a full completion of these missions can run you easily over an hour, let alone if you hunt collectibles, which require multiple playthroughs as most of them are RNG drops during searches. The maps were clearly designed by people who hadn't actually played the previous games, theres usually 2-3 generators acrossthe ENTIRE maps, and theyre in the worst locations possible. Sniper hides are now completely gone and enemy snipers wander around in a cloth coat and actually have a detection meter for you, but anytime they stop and aim, half your screen is a massive blinding scope reflection from 200m away. these Snipers cant hit ♥♥♥♥ either, and on marksmen only two 2 blocks of damage, thats 3 shots to kill.
Enemies are really stupid, like REALLY stupid this time around. Detection can be broken bc of the terrain meshes, ive had so many alert statuses just because a body clips through the floor or somehow gets seen from across the map THROUGH half the map, and the sound masking can be delayed. because of how open these maps are, traps and evironmental hazards take a huge backseat for our sniper here. Using weapons unlocks perks for those weapons, IE more zoom, damage or less recoil. This makes campaign missions an absolute cakewalk and wave defense barely serviceable, because some genius decided the red alert should give all enemies a 50% damage reduction meaning you have to shoot support jaegers 3-4 times with a .30-06 to kill them. Stealth is frustratingly slow and unrewarding, as most maps against are poorly designed and just force you into open areas with no sound masking, or it takes 40 minutes longer than going loud, and stealthing doesnt actually get you anything in terms of in game rewards. I should mention, theres now suppressed ammo for all rifles and you get modern suppressors when using that ammo. I guess thats supposed to make us feel better when theres no generators or environmental masking, except it makes the entire campaign a cakewalk when you have that ammo. One of the DLC rifles is even integrally suppressed and should just be considered cheating. Welrod is useless now that we have .45 ACP fully suppressed.
Theres also like 4 actual vehicle enemies in the entire campaign and the biggest threat was the Panzerturm in mission 3 which blocked you from using one path out of 7.
Story is complete ass, it was written by a 6 year old but hey, SE was never a story driven game so whatever. The shooting is still solid enough apart from red alert.
The biggest sin though is the DLC. a half assed kill hitler mission for $10. Charging $10 to shoot hitler in the testicles should be a crime against humanity. The best weapons are, predictably, paid DLC. Except half the weapons from previous games, most notably the m1 garand, are paid DLC. wtf.

Final Score: 5/10, get it for 50% off or more and its a decent buy.

Look, the concept, world and scenery is amazing. The game is beautiful, and theres a lot to love here, hell theres an elvis in this game that had me laughing for 15 minutes.
But...
The character customization was super underwhelming, the creation of breeds doesnt really do anything, as they all look extremely similar and some options like the dart frog-esque arm are locked in. Weapon customization may as well not be a thing because there is a clear meta in the gun parts that leaves you little option. Basically, DPS is the only thing that matters. Guns themselves are an absolute joke and trivialize most of what i saw in 5 hours; you become a turret that can sprint from spot to spot while enemies dumbly follow you at a snail's pace and few if enemies have anything but a basic melee attack, and any special attack comes with huge warnings and is child's play to dodge, and I saw no ranged attackers at all. Even worse was that no enemy, even boss types, had any way to counter ranged spam. In short, machine guns make this game a cake walk.

World is so empty but so beautiful, and the biggest sin by far is the lack of voicing. Characters make these jibber jabber noises and the narrator translates, but he never sticks to one way or style, so sometimes its third person past tense, other times its second person present tense, etc. This MURDERS the immersion and makes dialogue very boring and since its ONE guy narrating DOZENS of hours of dialogue, you will grow to hate this poor man despite his incredible storytelling voice. Sidequests have no depth being shallow enough to win a bethesda award, and like i said the world is just so darn empty, the only NPCs i ever saw were enemies at specific, scripted locations, with no faction system so everyone is just naturally hostiel because guess what, all the world NPCs are magically the faction you didn't pick in the over TWO HOUR tutorial segment.

Melee combat is okay, its serviceable but nothing special. Combos are often a waste of time apart from the dedicated boss types as generic mobs have neither the health nor the threat to bother combo'ing. Vendors rarely have anything for sale, let alone anything GOOD for sale, i mean every time i checked a vendor they had a few items and it was stuff i was finding 20 minutes ago.

The tutorial HOLY ♥♥♥♥♥ this tutorial, it is literally like 2.5 entire hours, and in the last 45 minutes you get stopped every minute or two for exposition, or rather for the narrator to either translate the annoying jabbering of NPCs, or to explain something pointless over a near static image, sometimes things we would be much better off not knowing as they don't matter or just dont affect you as a character. Morality system is just garbage, the entire game is only good or evil, theres no grey areas or third options and the choices are clearly defined, i mean the options literally have a LIGHT and DARK sprite over them to tell you which to pick, and thats the only RPG element since you can only talk to quest and vendor NPCs who dont have any dialogue options other than "continue".

Game has a solid foundation with great core ideas and the devs clearly put their hearts and souls into this, but theyre an inexperienced first time studio so to speak, and the game suffers greatly for it, with janky writing, an empty world, a completely boring cast of characters with no personality on account of not being voiced, and of course, the most cut and dry "good guy v bad guy" story since superman first appeared on screen. Hopefully theyll continue updating it with fixes, (Update: all theyve done in YEARS was a few bugfixes) but as it stands i give it a 5/10 (Updating to a 2/10. This game is effectively a $60 PC equivalent to an art book from a comicon artist) pretty average, sometimes below average game that only excels in being really pretty to look at at running extremely well (I used an RX 580 at the time).

Hope the devs come back in the near future to absolutely slam dunk a reboot or sequel-boot, or even a new IP, but this game aint worth it. Like i said, its effectively an art book with a few jokes that you get to press a few buttons while looking at it.

This game has absolutely no right to be this darn fun and i adore it, well worth $30 and the power of the AI in this game will either give you nightmares or leave you a king of RTS defense. You can beat the game without even using over half the things available to you.

just be careful, this game is highly addictive and may cause you to stop doing anything but play it for 10 hours straight.
