Short, sweet, and engaging. There's plenty of substance and decisions to make, but you can still beat it in one session. Hard to make mistakes, but plenty of ways to optimize it, too. I appreciate that you can still keep playing after the ending, with a few more Prestige unlocks to aim for if you'd want to do that.

Early Access Review
Beat the game and got most current available skills to the current cap of 50. It's been satisfying so far, even if it still has a way to go before it's a complete experience. There's a great foundation that just needs -more- substance.

Even in EA, it feels like there's always something you could be doing to make your life easier. Individual tasks are quick and usually fun to pursue, so it's a matter of deciding what you want to prioritize. I tend to rush these games, but I still felt like it was rewarding enough to go through every tier of gear somewhat properly. Being early-midgame locked makes me appreciate content I'd probably never have bothered with otherwise.

Once I'd finished the core gameplay, I spent a bit of time learning the base building. They got a good system going, and I'm excited to see it improve. There's plenty of decorative clutter, though it needs more regular furniture options. The snapping works great and I appreciate the noclip/freecam build spell to make things easier. It definitely needs a build from storage option for that, though.

Combat's simple yet satisfying. The AI is usually somewhat cheesable if you're struggling to reach the DPS needed to deal with them. On the way to progress from stone to bronze gear, I did feel better served by my basic bow and positioning where they couldn't fight back than I did by my melee gear. It was a fun break although it certainly didn't feel like the 'intended' approach. The gap between tier 3 and 4 felt a lot shorter and less rewarding than the gap between 2 and 3.

I'm curious how they'll develop the combat triangle over time, it will require delicate balancing to make that system engaging in a game like this. I hope they have the chops to pull it off without it feeling arbitrary.

The main issue I have with the game is going to be patched soon. There's currently an annoying amount of raids targeting you. There'll be a nerf how often this occurs, but I'd like some form of ways to counter these entirely. Whether that's some Construction reward, or slaying a relevant world boss to prevent spawns for a period of time, I don't know. It's just gotten to a point of frustration.

I would like a world setting to keep inventory after dying. However, I don't think it's bad that it's currently not offered. You can place lodestones all over the map to teleport wherever you need to be, so you can mostly negate the downsides of having to run back once you've set up a few locations. It's mainly annoying to lose your main weapon, or to find out you didn't have any food or antipoisons in storage so you have to make some first if you want to get to your gravestone safely. Few things feel unfair to a degree where dying is anything but user error, although poison damage can be brutal and isn't necessarily engaging to deal with for how common it can be.

Renewing my review after Boys in Blue. Game's gotten a lot better, main issues are content (3 updates by september afaik) and systems that need reworking, but the core of it is a really fun and good experience now imho.
