This game is a triumph in simplicity, with enough depth that you will start to strategize but being easy enough to pick up that you can just play and go if you'd like. Runs well on Deck unless you get the most visually effects-heavy weapons and a ton of enemies. Been playing since there was only two levels and it's still great. There's been some power-creep, but you can always adjust your difficulty with character selection and sealing some items from the pool.

Pros:
  • Fire Emblem meets Ogre Battle - Two great tastes that taste great together.
  • Good variety of classes and customization across your various squads, letting you choose your gameplay type.
  • Difficulty options to tailor the experience to whatever you'd like.

Cons:
  • Storytelling is a bit weak. Tropes aren't bad, per se, but there's some elements that the story really tries to tell the player are twists, but all the twists are pretty obvious as they come to you.
  • Not a huge con, but the art of the character portraits, maps, and sprites don't feel that cohesive. The sprites are mostly good (one exception), and the art is also mostly good, but the maps just seem like generic RP maker assets, and all together, it seems like the three styles were all pulled from different games.
  • There is one sprite that's hilariously bad late game: One of your characters, late game, effectively gets a class change that will make her battle sprite into giant lady. Not only does her art REALLY not match her sprite anymore, she suddenly has thighs bigger than her torso, giant boobs with pink boob plate, and she steps on people? What kind of weird-ass giant lady reddit fetish is this lmao. It's one of those things where you can't stop laughing at how bad it is. You gotta fix that, dev-bros.
  • Sooooo much RNG on items and special recruits. Did one of the best recruits in the game just pop up, but it's level 4 so you don't have enough money to get them? Sorry, may never come by again. That at least feels Ogre Battle-like though where in MotBQ, you could get the best sword in the game or a princess promotion items on level 1 if fate decided it, or just get healing trash for the rest of the game.

Overall, playing it and having fun with it, but there's some points where you just kinda grimace and get through. Recommending the game if you're really needing a Ogre Battle hit and have played the others to death.

I've got four of these and still am worried about what I'll do when I can't get another. Sometimes it's annoying about the batteries, but it's still a great controller. Bring them back, Valve!

Game performance isn't super optimized, with some stuttering and frame drops even on VR ready PCs. For fans of the original KUF games on XBox, the game's general appearance seems to work against it; we're returning to the cynical world of Bersia where war is hell, but everything is super bright and vibrant, and your fantasy-armored troops get to stand next to your PCs and villains that all look like they fell out of any random KMMO from the last five years.

For fans of the series, it feels like the KUF gameplay is being held hostage behind a reskinned version of TERA. Pass, replay Crusaders, and hope that Blueside comes out of this with enough money to make a single-player KUF again, but not enough money to think the MMO was a great idea.
