This game is honestly so much fun. At first it's super challenging, but the more you play and upgrade your characters, the easier it gets. There's a bunch of different characters who all have different abilities and proficiency. On top of that, during your run you can find different weapons/scrolls to kind of customize your play style. At the end of each stage you can find a goblet which gives you a choice between 3 upgrades. You have the option of upgrading an aspect of your character's Primary Skill, Secondary Skill, or Weapon Enhancement. Depending on which of these upgrades you choose, it drastically changes the course of the game. For example, with the turtle character, if you upgrade his secondary skill which is a single strong punch, it changes to this really quick multi-punch and you basically turn into a JoJo character xD

In addition to the skill upgrades, there are scrolls you can pick up which boost different things like weapon damage, crit chance, movement speed, elemental effects etc. There are some really strong scroll combinations. It's fun to experiment and see which things work well together.

There are lots of unique weapons that you can pick up that range from pistols, shotguns, smgs, snipers, rocket launchers, swords and even a brick that you just throw at enemies. There's really funny things like a little handheld dragon or lizard that shoots fire or bombs at your enemies. Each of these weapons are really unique, and have random modifiers on them each time, along with different damage types; Fire, Corrosion, and Shock. Each damage type is either very effective or less effective depending on what enemy you're going up against. They will have different colored healthbars depending on what they're weak to. Blue health (Shield) is weak to Shock. Yellow health (armor) is weak to corrosion. Red health is weak to fire. You can even combine multiple elements for bonus effects. Fire + Corrosion does explosive AoE damage which is really useful. Other combinations get you Miasma which is a strong poison effect, or Manipulation which temporarily converts enemies into allies.

There are 4 Acts of the game, each with their own subset of levels, and each act has 2 random final bosses that you can encounter. Each level has random and unique enemy encounters/loot and things called vaults which are bonus levels that give you even more loot. Sometimes a level can have unique modifiers for an extra challenge, such as turning defeated enemies into another enemy type, or a boss rush if you're playing on the higher difficulties.

This game has so many different ways to play and customize your run that you'll always find new ways to enjoy it. Lots of different things synergize and make you extremely strong. Despite that though, you need to be careful cause even if you are really powerful, the enemies can still do a lot of damage very quickly. It's still a pretty challenging game. It has up to 4 player co-op and its definitely a bit easier and more enjoyable with friends.

The devs are very frequently updating and adding new things to the game, so you'll definitely get a lot of playtime out of this. It's definitely worth it, even full price.

I'm gonna start off by saying that this game might not be for everyone. The brutal difficulty in the beginning is definitely going to drive a lot of people away. However if you are the kind of person who strives to improve no matter how many times you fail, then you will probably enjoy this game. I have played and beaten all the other Souls games but it took me almost 10 hours for this game to finally click with me enough to beat some of the early game bosses. You can't really go in expecting another Souls game though. It has some aspects that are similar but for the most part it's completely different. Once you get the hang of how the game works, it becomes much more enjoyable.

The story is actually comprehensible unlike the other Souls games. You play as a shinobi to the young Divine Heir, Kuro. Because of him you have the power of the Dragon's Heritage, or the ability to resurrect after death. People want to take Kuro away because of this power he can grant, and your journey is to rescue him, and to sever the binds of that power. In order to do that you have to fight your way through the land of Ashina to the top of the Ashina Castle. That's pretty much it. It's definitely a bit more complex than that lore wise, but I won't go into that because there are many videos on youtube that go in depth about it.

The combat is not like Souls. Sure you can parry and riposte a.k.a. "Death Blow" but I'd say it's closer to a rhythm game. You get into this sort of dance with enemies where you take turns parrying each other, trying to break an enemies "Posture" (which grants a death blow once broken) and occasionally dodging grab attacks, jumping over sweeps, or dashing in to 'Mikiri Counter.' Those 3 moves are "Perilous Attacks" and you better get familiar with them if you wanna survive. It takes a while to master but once you get the hang of it you will pretty much never die again to bosses.

There is also the new "prosthetic arm" mechanic where you can equip MANY different tools to switch up how you approach fights. (and a grappling hook!) You start off with just a handful of base tools, which are scattered around the starting areas, but all of them can be upgraded into other tools with unique effects to even further increase your options when taking on enemies. It's really fun seeing how different enemies react to all the different tools you have, but the only downside is that each of them cost "Spirit Emblems" which you only have a limited amount of.

Stealth is also a part of the game too. While it may not be as good as stealth in other games, it's still really useful, and not necessarily required at any point. If you are struggling with any area, try sneaking up on an enemy to death blow them and sort of even the odds. You can even do this to bosses once, and effectively cut their total HP in half, giving you a major boost if you're having trouble. Playing the ninja game LIKE a ninja will really help you succeed in many cases, just be sure you hide in grass instead of out in the open otherwise it won't be very effective. Utilizing items such as the Ceramic Shard to lure an enemy away from his friends while you're hiding is a really good idea as well. Everything you have can be used as a tool, stealth is definitely one of the most important tools in your arsenal.

The bosses are fantastic, especially the ones near the end of the game. Some manage to beat out the finest bosses in the Souls games! ...at least in my opinion. And along with the bosses, there are mini-bosses scattered throughout the game, most of which drop "prayer beads" which can upgrade your health after you get 4. Story bosses give you "memories" which increase your attack power a bit when used. So the more you explore and the more you fight, the stronger you become. You don't have to worry about upgrading specific stats or choosing the right armor. All you have to worry about is how much damage you do, and if you have the right tools to take on your enemies.

To wrap up this long review i'm just gonna say that as of right now this is by far my favorite FromSoft game. Everything about it just seems great to me, the only frustrating part I ever had to deal with were those early hours of learning the game. It seemed so impossible back then, just like every other souls game, and once it clicked it just became incredible to play. Every single boss is such a thrill to fight, most areas are difficult to get through but not too bad. I'm not quite sure what else to say other than this: Play the game. You are going to die over and over again at first, that's fine. I promise you though, if you can overcome the first few bosses, you can beat the entire game. Just don't give up. You won't regret it.

Although this game has aged quite a bit, it still never gets old. Every time I play I experience something new. In my personal opinion it is much more enjoyable than KF2; it's more balanced, it has more maps, no microtransactions, and a friendly community. I don't think I'll ever give up this masterpiece. If you like zombie games at all, I definitely recommend giving this game a try. Whether you only play an occasional match or keep going for hours on end, the gameplay never gets stale.

Early Access Review
10/10 - This game started off cute. At first, you have adorable little pictures of ghosts, pumpkins, and spiders pop out at you as you go from room to room. At first it wasn't too bad. However, the farther you get in the game, the less cute it gets. You start to find REAL monsters, called Specimens. Some of them aren't too difficult to get away from, but again, the farther into the game you get, the worse the monsters get as well. This game will tap into your fears. More and more you find yourself running because you are afraid of what's behind you. More and more will you beg for the cardboard cutouts. This game is going to test you and your mind. You will see things. You will be tricked. You definitely will be scared. Can you make it through 1000 rooms? Definitely give this game a try.
