Sony just wants to pad their numbers to look good while they've been losing money and are now flexing some muscle in an attempt to save their dying company.
The game has worked perfectly fine from the start without it and will if they pull back, but knowing Sony and its fanbase of movie-watchers I don't think they will.

It was fun while it lasted. A shame it has to end this way.
