A really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ unique game, easily recommend.

To give a description of it, it's like Hearthstone's dungeon run if each run had wayyyyy more steps, mixed with the Binding of Isaac.

So, before I begin I want to preface that I grew up on the arcade version of toki, not the sega genesis or the commodore 64 copy. This review will be for this game as a whole, and hopefully not clouded by nostalgia.

Pros:
Absolutely gorgeous art style (though art is subjective)
Plays similarly (albeit small differences) between this version and the arcade version
Fun to play (also subjective)

Cons:
The game doesn't cap fps, and there is no option to. I had to manually cap my fps through 3rd party software as my computer is too beefy. For this to run normally, you have to cap it at 60fps, or the game will dramatically run faster (not smoother) making it nearly unplayable.

Only limited lives and "credits". Seeing as how this is a $20 title, I expected to be able to play through the entirety of it without worry of credits or lives. It made sense to have credits and lives in the arcade version, as it's an arcade game and needs to make money. But the fact that lives and "credits" remain in this game is just beyond me. My ideal fix to this is to remove "credits" entirely, and just have lives. In the game you get a set amount of lives based on the difficulty you set it to, easy being 9 lives, and "hardest" being 2 lives. Once you run out of lives, the game should give you the max amount of lives according to your set difficulty and kick you to the start of the level rather than your whole "run". Usually when you die you respawn at a checkpoint, but if you die without any more lives in the arcade, it'd consume a credit. If we could abandon credits, and have a save file, that'd be great.

I received this game from the Humble Bundle Monthly early unlock, and I think this is a solid game.
I was hesitant to play the game, as it appears to be a Minecraft clone (and I dislike Minecraft). But I decided to try it out with a friend.
The settings were a bit janky because it started in 640x480, and was unable to set to 1920x1080. Luckily, a quick restart allowed the res to change to 1920x1080 (144hz). Once I set it to 1920x1080, the UI didn't scale properly, resulting in a 640x480 UI, stretched to 1920x1090. I believe to fix that I had to switch it between fullscreen and fullscreen borderless (I should mention I play in fullscreen borderless). Once the settings were all figured out, my friend and I headed into the game.
It was pretty easy to start the game, as the starting quests and tutorials give a pretty good basic understanding to the game and what you need to do. I also really liked the fact you can change the settings so it doesn't force you into 3rd person in combat, though I ended up doing so anyways.
Gameplay-wise, there were very few bugs my friend and I encountered. The biggest issue was random crashing. I haven't looked for a fix, as it didn't happen enough to bother me. I looked up a fix as I was writing this, and the devs have replied to other's complaints on crashing relatively fast (within a few days at max), which is always a good sign of a good developer. My friend on the other hand got stuck in doors a lot, which I assume is because of some sort of lag or just the way the game handles doors across different pcs (I was host, though my Internet is good). I don't think you'll find that issue playing solo.
To progress in the game was very fun, as you need a wide variety of materials to upgrade clothes, weapons, "crafting tables", etc. and to get those materials, you most likely need to travel to a new island to obtain a specific material. For most materials, they give you a little bit on one island, but a bountiful amount in the following few islands, which wants players to progress so they have an easier time gathering material, but not forcing them to do so (in other words, you set the speed of your gameplay).
Combat was surprisingly fun in the end. However the first few islands when you're just getting into the game is a bit iffy due to lack of skills. I played as a Mage, and really liked my skills mid to late game. Early game it is hard to get skills, as you need to either craft them, or buy them on specific islands.
One thing that hindered my experience early game, was that my friend and I didn't know how to craft better weapons until island 5 or so. This was mostly because each class has a different "crafting table", and those different tables dictate what weapons and armor you craft. We assumed the upgraded weapons would be in the upgraded versions of the workbench, but weren't.
I think to fix this, the game could introduce each table to the corresponding classes in a quest, which would entice players to learn about it, as they get a reward as opposed to just a tutorial.
For my friend and I, we took 12 hours to find and kill the final boss on the small world setting. We did not explore every island, which I'm intending to do. There is also quests and stuff to do after the final boss, but again, I plan on going back to do those. I'd imagine on normal or large mode, that time would expand significantly. I think the small world is good for introducing the game, but for continuing it you should definitely play on normal or large mode, as you keep your character through each universe you make (or you could create a new character each time) and your character's level on the new universe would make for a very short playthrough.
The mid-game was a bit overwhelming, as I needed to find a ton of different material which you need to find on different islands, but wasn't half bad trying to find those material. It wasn't really grindy, but it wasn't just a freebie. It was a nice blend of the two.
All in all, I think this game is really good, and will definitely be playing more of it.

I play magic a lot, like, a LOT (in real life), and to me, this game has it's pros and cons just like any other game.

Pros:
Great for teaching new players (I've got 3 of my friends into magic by using this)
Good for standard play
You don't have to pay to get booster packs
So far every new set has been added with their own campaign missions (except for eternal masters, which is understandable)

Cons:
Only sets are Origins+ (no eternal formats)
Has minor fixes besides one that pops up sometime's while I'm playing campaign where I am unable to play anything, and the bot is either unable to play anything, or doesn't want to.
Getting the cards you want/need are difficult because it is all random and you can't buy individual cards
6 cards a booster pack (???)

Obviously a free version of magic can't compare with MTGO, but for a free version, it does it's job and more. Overall, I believe that this game is a great way to spend some extra magic urge without paying for anything and a great way to recruit friends.
