Little Square Things is a subversion of the classic box-pushing Sokoban. Now we've seen quite a lot of it, including Stephen's Sausage Roll, A Good Snowman is Hard to Build, Monster's Expedition and more - but LST makes things fresh in its own way by letting you directly play as the box(es). Each level consists in you controlling one or, in most cases, several boxes at once and leading them to a green tile in order to complete it. There are around 130 levels which range from dead easy to way too hard for me, so it's pretty safe to say that everyone can find something to like.

Let's talk positives:
- It might seem like Sokoban, but there are lots of different gameplay mechanics. Some levels see you sacrificing blocks in order to cross water, others have blocks that have ice sliding physics or even blocks that have a mind of their own! It's quite impressive, especially considering the fact that there are 130 levels with 3 stars to collect in each. Later worlds have levels that seem completely bonkers at first glance, but the feeling of progressing through the game while understanding its layers of gameplay mechanics and getting better at it is very gratifying.
- Talking about stars, each level has three. One is for completion, another is for completion under a certain amount of moves, and the third is for collection star fragments. The third one is the most unique as it asks players to replay levels with a different goal in mind. You won't have to get your boxes to the green tiles, so you might sacrifice three of your four in order to create an ice bridge and get to some stranded fragment. It's honestly a lot of fun, and it feels refreshing after trying to bear par for a while.
- The game is free! It's quite incredible since, as I said, there's a lot of quality AND content.

As for negatives... can't say there are any I can think of! It's not a perfect game, but it does everything it sets out to masterfully. It's also got a lot of quality of life stuff like controlling speed or undoing moves, which honestly makes playing Sokoban-types way more fun.

In short, Little Square Things is a hidden gem that's shouldn't be missed by fans of puzzle games. It starts out easy, introduces loads of mechanics and gameplay twists and ends up devilishly difficult by the time you reach the latter worlds. It might not be as unique as Stephen's Sausage Roll or Monster's Expedition, but it does what it wants to very well and the game feels very tight as a result. There's a lot of content to go around for completionists and even if you just want to check it out, you can go ahead - it's free!

Toverblade is a turn-based roguelite tactical RPG that's played with cards. If that seems complicated, it's really not! You choose a class for your character - Warrior, Archer or Mage - then gear them up before creating a deck of cards such as "Move 1 spot", "Slash", "Block". Each card has a damage type, a range and an energy cost. This means that you'll have to carefully manage your position on a tactical grid as well as your attack range each turn in order to defeat enemies. It's actually quite simple and minimalistic, which means the screenshots are enough to get the point!

The roguelite aspect of the game comes from the fact that defeated enemies give you cards that you can equip at the start of a run, as well as new gear that influences your stats. Using cards also gives you experience, which slowly increases your main stat - melee, range, magic - as well! This means you're always progressing and getting stronger, a roguelite staple.

The main draw of Toverblade is certaintly the Sokpop touch: it's twitchy, cute and mysterious all at once. It manages to be both minimalistic and deceptively complex, and while some accessibility options would be great, it's a neat little strategy game that you can pick up whenever you feel like it.

Space Captain McCallery - Episode 2 is a lot like the first episode. It's yet another Renegade Sector game and that means you know what to expect: a short but fun adventure through an alien world with some humor, a bit of scenario and fun but ultimately serviceable gameplay.

While playing Episode 1, I felt like it was a pity that the game didn't do more with what it had. A single weapon, no movement options except for the dash and very basic platforming did the trick, sure, but it could be more. That's exactly what I expected Episode 2 to do, and to my surprise, it didn't really deliver. You've still got the interesting Energy system, which simulates hunger and is replenished by eating strange fruits you find in the overworld. It's also depleted to craft new ammunition for your gun. You still only get the one gun, which is a pity - even something like an unlockable charged shot would help spice up the combat a lot!

Now for the new stuff! Purple Moss makes an appearance. It's a new kind of fruit that is perishable as soon as you use a checkpoint. While it doesn't really change the gameplay loop too much, it feels like a step in the right direction, and providing the player with more options is always good.
The dash makes a return and it's used a bit more this time. You've got some more light platforming, and bosses frequently require you to dash around to avoid damage, which makes the combat feel faster and more dynamic. Common enemies are still a pain because they're numerous and fighting them is useless, but the bosses are all good if a bit easy. The final boss has a twist I really enjoyed!

In conclusion, Episode 2 is definitely a step in the right direction... if you liked Episode 1. It's more of the same, but exploring an alien world still felt very fun, and I enjoy how short the game is. I hope Episode 3 adds more stuff to distinguish itself - new guns and movement options would help tremendously.

A short and interesting romp through an alien world! I finished it in 30 minutes, but times may vary between players - I kind of blasted through it.

Pros are the energy system, which serves as both a hunger meter that has to be replenished through the use of food you can pick up in the world AND that can be traded for ammo, and the lovely feeling of adventure. The last part of the game is particularly cool - it's an ancient temple with keys to find and some light platforming. I had a lot of fun with it!

Cons are the fact that killing monsters serves no purpose, which means that you can and should just run past them, and the lack of progression. Once you find the gun, that's about it, nothing is going to change gameplay-wise. However, the energy system creates a loop that is interesting enough for the short length of the game, so it's not that bad.

TL;DR: Space Captain McCallery - Episode 1 is a nice Renegade Sector game, and a niftly little indie platformer. It's on the short side and it doesn't do much, but it does it well! I would definitely advice trying it out for how cheap it is, as well as having a look at the rest of Renegade Sector's catalogue.

Dread X Collection: The Hunt is the fourth curated collection of horror games published by Dread XP. It's one of the shorter one with "only" 7 games, but this is justified by the fact that each game got more time and polish put into it.

And this definitely shows! All seven of them were, at the very least, good and interesting experiences. Uktena 64 (hunting simulator gone wrong) and Axis Mundi (first person Fatal Frame) were my favorite of the bunch, but they all had something special. Black Relic has a killer graphic style, Rose of Meat is super unique and developed by Golden Light creator Mr. Pink, Seraphixial does the classic FPS weapon progression right in a weird world, The House of Unrest is a great spin on The Exorcist with a badass gun-wielding priest and The Fruit feels like an Amnesia game.

The Hunt also features yet another hub world, but it doesn't really deliver. Which is a shame: the snowy isolated research base is an excellent The Thing-inspired setting that drips atmosphere! Yet, there is a lot of boring backtracking to do, exploration is not really motivating and it all feels like wasted potential that could have been exploited better. Even then, there is a mode to completely ignore the hub world and just play the games, which is really appreciated.

It's not my favorite collection, but it's the only one in which all of the games were good, which is very impressive since they were all quite different. Definitely recommend trying this one out if you're a fan of first person shooters, there's really no way to be disappointed, especially considering how cheap the collection is.

TLDR: pear potion 🍐 is a lovely metroidvania game in which you are a cute witch who shoots stuff at other stuff with her wand. As the description states, it contains a lot of NPCs to chat with. It's short-ish and should last about 2 hours, with a lot of completely optional secrets to find. It's great and a steal for that price!

The main draws of the games are :
- The writing. It's very funny! Tons of characters to speak to, and they're all very fun and cute - but not as cute as the fruit guardians. You've got frogs, toads, slimes and cats which is all you should really need in a video game.
- The gameplay. Another review mentioned Hero Core, an old shooter game that is very similar to pear potion 🍐 and it's a good comparison! I find pear potion 🍐 more engaging thanks to a variety of shooting options which can all be upgraded, and the huge number of secrets. These can contain gold, more gold or even tips to find special secrets that I won't spoil here. The bosses are never too tough, although you might need to try some of them a few times. It's all good fun and it's a blast to play, especially since it's not too long!

The only things the game lacks are invincibility frames and some difficulty options that would be welcome in order to make the game more accessible. Other than that, pear potion 🍐 is a great little metroidvania that does not overstay its welcome and is a really fun way to spend a couple hours!

TLDR: :)

10mg :) is a collection of minigames inspired by classics such as Bubble Bobble, Snake or Tetris. It's really cheap, it's really quick and it's really fun! You'll get between ten and twenty minutes out of it, which is perfectly fine in my opinion. Also check out 10mg's other releases - short and flavorful games are rare in this industry, and they're publishing a lot of them.

The first Dread X Collection was an incredible initiative that aimed to push creators to create horror experiences. It was a success, even if not every game in the collection was good - every single one of them was still an attempt at something new and interesting. It was exactly what the indie horror gaming community needed!

If that sounds appealing to you, then you'll be glad to know that the Dread X Collection 2 is more of the same. Once again, some of the games are excellent proof of concepts that deserve to become full games ; some are interesting ideas that make for a really nice short game ; some are flawed but still try something new. A new "meta-game" was added to the lot in the form of a 13th game which serves as a hub world to all of the others. It's pleasant to explore and has a few puzzles while giving some context to the collection.

For such a low price, it's a given that you should buy the collection. You'll support an initiative that will boost creativity in the indie horror scene and as a bonus, you'll get some nice games. My personal favorites are The Thing in the Lake, Squirrel Stapler and Undiscovered: they each explore a different aspect of horror that is not often found and feels very refreshing.

This isn't my first time playing Lamm. I've been following the game for a long time, I've played its demos and I'm extremely happy to finally see it on Steam. However, my review will not be biased ; the game isn't perfect and potential buyers need to know the good sides, but also the bad sides of the game.

What is it ?
Lamm is a puzzle-platformer, or to be more accurate, a platformer with a cool and unique twist that I will explain later. It's divided in several worlds, themselves composed of six to eight levels each. You access them via a nice looking hub, but progress is linear and you can't go to another world if you feel stuck. Each and every world brings something new to the table, whether it be saws, water or the simple concept of darkness.

Despite its looks, Lamm is far from a Super Meat Boy x Limbo crossover. B&W has been used in games for a very long time and its choice here is pretty relevant, accentuating the importance of the colored orbs. These are, by the way, the coolest aspect of the game ; by default, your character cannot jump. He has to pick up a colored orb to gain the ability to make a certain number of jumps (Black = 0, White = 1, Yellow = 2...). This idea is used through the whole game in different and unique ways, which I quite frankly haven't seen in another game to this date.

Everything isn't perfect, obviously. The difficulty ramps up very nicely but might be a bit too much for some, especially in later levels. The hidden fireflies in each level are sometimes tough to find, let alone get since you also have to end the level to truly "keep" them. But they unlock the best levels in the game, ranging from "easy with a twist" to "mind-twisting hard" !

My opinion
I'm an experienced platformer player and I had a lot of fun with Lamm. The first levels are quite easy, but things quickly get a bit tougher and you have to think to get through levels without dying. It's never impossibly hard either, which I liked, but the last levels are a real challenge.
Even though I've read some negative feedback about the game's looks on Greenlight, it's something that doesn't really bother me. The game looks nice, every world felt fresh and I can't really ask for more. Considering its relatively cheap price, this was good. If I had to mark Lamm, it would be a solid 7.5/10 : Good, does its job well and doesn't overstay its welcome.

TL;DR
Pros :
  • Unique gameplay that feels fresh and familiar at the same time.
  • Replay value : collectables in every level, speedrun-friendly timer.
  • The difficulty curve is as steep as it is rewarding.
  • Acceptably long - around two to four hours, depending on your skills and motivation to 100%. Might be even longer if you want good times !
  • Very low price.

Cons :
  • The difficulty curve is as steep as it is rewarding.
  • Could do with less linearity to help players keep playing even if they get stuck.
