The KGB (Committee for State Security) was the Soviet Union’s main security and intelligence agency from 1954 to 1991. It handled counterintelligence, foreign espionage, internal security, and surveillance, both domestically and abroad, especially during the Cold War. The KGB suppressed dissent and monitored political threats. After the Soviet Union's collapse, it was replaced by agencies like the FSB in Russia. Its influence still lingers in modern Russian politics, with former KGB officers, including Vladimir Putin, holding key positions.
