I wonder what circumstances could lead to a negative review for this

OG SH2 player here. Bloober didn't just make a great game. Despite all odds, they made an absolute banger of a remake that expertly captures the essence of Silent Hill 2 with very few compromises. Puzzles are so well done, I played on Hard difficulty and there were some ball-busters but nothing to ever push me to a guide. The story is just as powerful as the original if not better. The characters are still great and the voice acting is mostly fantastic. Combat is just okay, its fun but the lack of depth can really be felt over the game's surprisingly long runtime. However combat was never the primary focus of SH2, rather a vehicle to move the story forward and in any respect, its still a massive improvement over the original. Offsetting this are new phases to boss fights, a couple all-new boss fights, and countless surprises and straight-up objective improvements to the experience.

Loved this game but despite the multiple endings I have no drive to play it again any time soon. There just isn't the same level of replayabilty as something like the newer Resident Evil games. I can understand someone finding $70 a bit too high, as of now its $54 on greenmangaming if you're looking for a sale.

Tough call here. There's a significant amount of jank to just about everything in this game. However, it can still be enjoyable at times and has some interesting ideas. I feel that the devs have bit off more than they can chew, but with some patches and more polish, there's the makings of a great game here. I wouldn't call it outright bad though. Just barely gets a positive rating, definitely wait for a sale.

I'm lucky enough to have only had one crash so far, once I turned all the settings down to high I've been crashed free. (Ryzen 7 7800X3D, RTX 4070) Oddly enough enabling DLSS makes performance much worse on anything but the Performance setting. This game also sneakily defaults your render resolution to 50% as if that is acceptable, so be sure to change that.

Extremely fun game. Missions are surprisingly diverse, with varied objectives and smart level design. It takes a while to get going; the first several missions are essentially tutorial. But from Chapter 1's final mission onward it can get very challenging. Story is told almost entirely through voicemails and radio chatter with the occasional in-game cinematic, but the atmosphere, characters, and dialogue are all top quality. Sooo much customization with a wide assortment of enjoyable weapons, missiles, body parts etc. PVP is fun but there seriously needs to be proper matchmaking. As of right now its entirely room based, which feels a bit outdated.

If you want a satisfying mech action game with challenging and creative bosses + levels, look no further. And make sure you keep playing after you beat it the first time...
