I can recommend this bundle, at full price, purely for the first game it contains: 999; 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors. It's, simply put, an excellent piece of story-telling that makes use of not just its setting and characters, but also its very medium. The room escape games in between are pretty good as well, though they fall into a trap of a major theme of the game always being the answer.

This port is in some ways better than the original DS game, and worse in others. Technically, it's a bit of a hack-job, with settings menus only accessible in odd ways, but it includes a much-needed jump feature to go to any point in the game you've already seen. The writing also suffers a bit in this port, though not to such a degree that it affects the story. This port does have voice-acting, though. Overall, I recommend this port over the original, but you really can't go wrong with either.

Things get a bit more complicated with the second game: VLR; Virtue's Last Reward. First, the good. The puzzle design is much improved. No longer are the solutions identical. You actually have to think your way out of the boxes you're put in.

If you'd like to avoid some vague story spoilers, just know that I ultimately can recommend VLR, though not as highly as 999.

Right, the story. 999 is largely played not unlike a straight mystery. However, throughout the game there are hints of something supernatural/sci-fi. VLR steers into this direction, hard. This isn't bad, per sé - I certainly had fun with it - but it takes something away from the relatively down-to-earth plot of 999. Play VLR only if you like or don't mind the supernatural elements from 999.
