I'll be honest, I didn't acquire this game through the usual channels. But after losing three hours in one session without realising, I couldn't do anything but pay full price for it.

Reasons I love this game:

- Rimworld + Factorio + Total War. Need I say more?
- Runs like a dream, even with large numbers of citizens.
- You control the pace - can be a cosy game, or a real challenge
- A 300 MB download for a full game in 2024. What the ♥♥♥♥? It doesn't even look bad.
- ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, this game looks good!
- A solo dev made this. What the ♥♥♥♥? This makes me feel bad about myself.
- Realism: the real enemy is neither food nor logistics, but racism

I could go on, but you get the idea.

This is a beautiful game, filled with complexity, variety, and excitement. It's like 5v5 chess.

But the community is so toxic towards new players (well, towards everyone, but particularly new players) that this game is destined to suffer a slow and painful death. It's already started, and the player numbers will continue to slowly dwindle over the next decade until Valve finally decide to snuff this game out like a dying candle.

The guy smurfing on your team in a pub thinks you have a bad draft? 3 minutes in: "gg lost on draft"

You make a mistake? "ahahaha ♥♥♥♥♥ noob team"

You want to try to play a new hero? "♥♥♥♥♥ noob why you choose hero you even cant play"

The existing player base makes no room for new players in this game, and yet the community still wonders to itself "huh, why is DotA dying? Must be Valve's fault." No. It's your fault. Even CS:GO CS2 is nowhere near as bad. In CS, people use voice chat, people say 'nice try' after a failed clutch, there's less flaming, less anger. This game is 10x more toxic than CS, and it will be the death of it.

I enjoyed it. It wasn't as heart-wrenching as I'd expected, but it was certainly an interesting exploration of how important the way you choose to view both your own life and the lives of others around you is. The blinking gimmick worked surprisingly well and added a cool level of depth to a game which is otherwise just a slightly interactive movie.

tl;dr - this game will be very, very good. But we must still wait for this. Hopefully not too long.

Derail Valley is a type of game that I really admire: a purely mechanics-driven game. Very little is scripted: doing things makes other things happen, and through doing the right things, you can achieve your goal - in this case, getting stuff from A to B in a huge and beautiful (if slightly creepy) world. The game does not hold your hand, but this doesn't mean it's difficult to pick up.

One of the best mechanics of this game is the physics system (unsurprisingly). It's this system that underpins the whole game: locomotives really _feel_ heavy, when you shunt cargo containers at 20 km/h you actually wince from the impact, and derailment is always a terrifying, looming prospect (wait, did that speed limit sign say 30 or 50? Either way, I'm going 70 right now so I shou- &*@£$&*"£*

This game does come with a few caveats, however:

1. It's not finished. While what exists plays well, and there are remarkably few bugs, the world itself and amount of content leaves a little to be desired in its current state. However, there exists a 'community unlocks' scheme, which has achieved all of its goals - and some of the items on the list are very exciting, including AI train drivers, a signalling system, and even road traffic. (edit: though, judging by how long a single major update takes, this may never come...)

2. You will have to be patient - the dev team is dedicated, but also small, so don't expect a new major update every week. (edit: this turned out to be an understatement.)

3. It's not a fast game. If you try to rush things without thinking, you will not get much enjoyment out of this. It's not a slow game either, but if you're looking for adrenaline-fuelled gameplay, maybe look elsewhere. (edit: actually, there's plenty of adrenaline, you just have to make sure you're going fast enough :))

4. Progression in this game is not fast. You will have to play for around 15 hours before you can unlock the first locomotive after the shunter, the steam locomotive. This sort of makes sense, given that there are only three trains in the game, but may be a turn off for some people.

Overall, though, this game has a ton of potential and is very fun even in its current, limited state. Highly recommended, and if you're not going to buy now, certainly add this to your wishlist. It can only get better.

Feel free to disregard this because of my low playtime, but this game just feels like it lacks any depth in its current state. Sure, you can change out parts on your car, you can discover a few generated structures, and the level of customisation in general isn't bad, but past that -- what is there to do? Nothing, except to drive. With the same scenery. For miles.

The UI is also horrible. Maybe that's part of the style of the game (if you can call 'not caring' a style), but either way it makes for a pretty bad introduction to the whole thing.

So, unless that kind of stuff is what you love, I suggest maybe waiting to purchase this game when it isn't a half-finished sandbox.
