Apparently it's about impossible to play online with buddies, if they're not on the same network as you. Been the case for years it seems.

They keep releasing big updates, about every half year / year, and keep expanding the universe every time.
Some of the missions do seem a bit repetitive, but you can skip between gathering starships, building your frigate fleet, building x amount of bases, or just managing your settlement, so easy to take a break from the missions that seem too similar. All in all, do recommend.

It's slowly but surely getting to where the board games are at, hardly spot any bugs anymore, but the gui could still be made a bit better to showcase what has happened, or is going to happen. Can't wait for all the expansions to be released, if that's the intended goal at least.
