Early Access Review
It might get better as time goes on but in it's early access stage as of now it gets boring very fast due to the limited item pool. There's a rampant amount of cheaters in game running modified clients to allow "infinite reroll" to scum the RNG. Massive balance issues as well keeping it very flavor of the week as the devs try to keep up. Not worth a purchase in it's current state.

Got it through a monthly humble bundle. Extremely inactive servers. Do not waste your money on this game!

Of the two hours I have played: 36 minutes have been spent in actual matches. The rest has been in queue. 12 matches, with an approximate average wait time of ten minutes to find a match.

Unless the distribution model changes (free to play) there will never be a chance of a large active player-base at this point, and dropping $20 just to stare at the words "searching" doesn't seem worth while.

There is no offline or single player mode (there is ONE training map for tutorial purposes but it features no moving targets). No bots. Only online match making - on company owned servers.

It's a old school feeling rpg fps that'll suck you in and leave you wishing you had more hours in the day.

Despite seemingly archaic graphics this games charm will win you over quickly. It's an unforgiving trek into a robotic odyssey like no other out there. Enlist a army of robots to help you defeat the purple menace, find procedurally generated weapon and armor parts, build your own base with defenses and radar, hack the planet and choose your destiny.

phr00t has consistently developed games in the *0** series that have all been an absolute blast to play. This is no exception to that. The game has longevity for multiple endings and play-styles (be a thief, or a melee expert, or a pilot, a warlord, the list goes on) so it's well worth the price tag.

Early Access Review
This early access release is actually worse than the alpha releases that came out before steam availability.

What you currently see, the title screen, 3 barely playable heroes in a few stages with only a couple of finished enemy sprites has been in development since early 2013. This is all a full 2 years+ of dev time shows. Add to it the fact that they had spent 3 years prior to work on the engine itself. Speaking of the engine -

"Our self-developed engine ensures better performance. Small reminder: ONI-engine packed 800+ pixel animations into 1Megabyte, about half the size of a photo taken with your phone."

That was scrapped, the entire game is now based in unity. Originally the animation and engine looked great the artists had ton tons of sprites and animation of high quality. Late 2014 Oni dissolved it's team. While the Founding dev nsisted it was due to "fame and discipline" the press at chuapp (a Chinese news blog) was able to contact former team members who stated (loosely translated)

Originally posted by devteam:
"two reasons: Project outlook is bleak and unbearable leader character."

Leaving only it's founding developer to direct, program, (possibly animate as well since the sprites have gotten worse) and market the game. The development remained stagnant for months. Currently the founder has hired a minimal team and had this to say about development

Originally posted by founder:
"Well we don't have the manpower or time or willing to add anything else into the game which is not related to the game itself." (Extra content, proper DRM, etc) "We have barely enough people to finish the game."

AVOID AT ALL COSTS. This game is not worth your money. It is not feature rich, it is hardly playable, and it shows no promise of ever getting better. This game has managed to get worse in gameplay/features and animation since original pre-steam release..

Honestly wouldn't reccomend this unless you're a hardcore Civilization fan. It's great for being a CIV game, but it's a complete downgrade from CIV5.

A cruel and unforgiving platformer this game strives to drive you absolutely mad. This is not for the easily enraged. One of my favorite indie titles.

Pixel boy and the ever expanding dungeon seems to be a unintentional spiritual succesor to inside a star filled sky. Both with how the powerups are handled and the over all gameplay of shmup (shoot-em-up) vs rougelike. Currently however this game is quite short, in less than an hour I've managed to play through and expereince as much as I feel I can from it in it's current state (future updates are promised with more content).

I do suggest purchasing this game for it's great gameplay style, groovy chill soundtrack and attempt to refresh an old genre but only if you absolutely love rougelike games.
