I know very little about pre 2.0 Stellaris, but the game currently is a lot of fun. It's being constantly worked on, and has an active/great modding community. Be careful about reviews that put this game down as a negative because they liked how things were, what it is now is what matters. Also playing with friends is great. Just get past the initial hurdle of learning this game and you'll love it.

For 20 dollars this game is a great deal as you can spend a lot of time on it. Only real downside are some queuing issues and other side bugs, but they don't ruin the core of this game at all.

Minecraft meets a really good pvp system. Takes a bit of learning of the classes and strategy but the game feels really solid once you understand what's happening. This game has a bunch of potential, and is definitely worth the current $17 it is now. The creators also seem into improving it and keeping an open mind.
