While the story is somewhat entertaining, the gameplay is really quite boring. There's literally nothing to do but race around, and while it is a racing game, the trailers hinted at other forms of gameplay and much more exciting cinematics. It's not a bad game, but its not a good game either. The story is pretty minimal compared to most games, and trying to tie this story into a continually running server-based platform makes for some really annoying drive times.

Also we were promised the whole country, as though that would be to scale. Nope. Everything has been scaled down so that most of the cities are a third of their actual sizes. I threw down a lot of money for this game because I thought I would be getting a lot out of it. Really, because of the setup we actually got, I say this game is worth no more than $30. If the animations and the LOD look right up your alley, you might be inspired to pay $40. But never is it ever worth the full AAA studio pricing.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So now that we have Wild Run, I guess the only thing I can say is WHY didn't I get it with my season pass? Considering it adds modes like DRAG racing, DRIFTING, etc. that most racing games have from the start, I think it should have been a free update. I won't be wasting my money on Wild Run though. The gameplay as a whole is still really boring.

Overview
Watch_Dogs is built on the same open-world engine and controls that are used in the Assassin's Creed franchise, making it a very quick game to get used to if you've ever played AC. The story is better than a lot of games, even if its main character is somewhat emotionally dry.

So What is Watch_Dogs?
Watch_Dogs is a story about Aiden Pierce, a criminal hacker turned vigilante after his niece was killed by assassins of unknown origin. As you explore Chicago and try to find out who ordered the hit that ended the life of Aiden's niece, you'll be using scripts loaded onto your phone to exploit weaknesses in the ctOS, the operating system that controls all functions of the city. You begin with limited resources and restricted access to the ctOS, with no ability to run exploits more than a mile or two from the motel where your server uplink is stationed.

As you follow new leads, you'll find allies in Claire and T-Bone, as well as gaining occasional assistance from DedSec, a hacking organization that strives to bring the ctOS offline permanently because Blume is using it to spy on and control the general population of the city. With their occasional help, and a growing library of exploits, you will gain access to the entirety of the ctOS of Chicago as you track down the people responsible for the death of Aiden's niece.

Gameplay
The engine feels identical to the Assassin's Creed games, which should come as no surprise considering it came from the same studio coalition. The controls are also the same as they are for the Assassin's Creed games released around the same time. That's where the parallel ends, though. As Aiden, you'll be able to use any vehicle on the streets of the city to complete your task. In addition, you have a public reputation, which can affect your ability to complete jobs without too much difficulty. If your reputation gets too low, people will begin notifying the police of your location when they see you nearby, and the police aren't taking Aiden prisoner ([spolier]Though Aiden does turn himself in at one point[/spoiler]). However, if you can escape their search radius, they back off immediately. On the whole, even with the hardest difficulty setting, I still felt too overpowerd. The challenge wasn't really there for me on most missions.

Also, around the city are a lot of Fixer Missions which you can do at anytime. They consist of car deliveries, police diversions, target assassinations, and a few other challenges that all really make it seem like Aiden is no better than any normal fixer (Fixer is basically a re-term on mercenary), While they add something to the gameplay for a while, you'll probably become bored quickly and go instead to one of the online objectives if you tire of the story.

Online Gameplay
In online, you try to gain access to other people's phones without being identified by their ctOS uplink. There are other modes available, but most people tend to prefer the hacking mode. I must say that when this game came out, every mode was full up with people. Now, the only people left to hack are people who suck at looking in hiding spots. My personal favorite to hide from them at is the roof of an L train station. That said, the fact is that only a few people are online at a time. Online Decryption is difficult to find a game for, and the rest of the modes are all players of easy difficulty. Online is no longer worth your time.

Summary
While the gameplay in the story mode is pretty enjoyable, multiplayer isn't really worth your time anymore.

Story
The story follows lead after lead and even forces Aiden to send his only family away from him for good, but Aiden remains largely unphased by these events. His only true passion is for finding who ordered the hit that killed his niece. With everything Aiden does, he shows no emotion because he's a very calculating person: shallow emotions + well though out actions. A lot of people have given Ubisoft grief for making him so shallow, but there are people like that, and it's time one of them was made a protagonist with a story that makes sense for them.

The story itself is quite exciting, even if Aiden isn't. In the end, it's a medium-length story that is enjoyable to most people.

Graphics
While not as good as everyone was expecting from E3, they're not bad at all. Even my laptop with a Radeon HD 8770m 1GB GPU (a very crappy graphics card) is capable of running the game at minimum settings and 720p. Raise the settings up higher, and you do get a bit less than you were expecting, but with mid-grade hardware, you can get higher than 30 fps.

Conclusion
This game was great when it came out. Now though, online has lost its charm. Buy this game when it is on sale, and you'll enjoy the story mode. Also, I suggest getting the Bad Blood expansion when you buy the game. Its story is as good, if not better than the main story, and you get to play as the the much more vivid character, T-Bone!

A very exciting and very challenging game, with incredible graphics and a storyline that was clearly the driving force behind the game's development. Byfar the best story I've seen from a game in a long time. I will admit, I had to see the ending several times to understand what had happened, but if you really pay attention to all of the little details, the audio logs, etc., you will probably have a better time understanding what's going on than me.

This isn't a game. It isn't a simulator either. It's somewhere in the middle, at that lukewarm that makes it terrible. It's too realistic and boring to be a game, and it's too limited and not enough open world to be a simulator. Also, it's nowhere near finished.

Controls:
The key bindings can't be changed, nor can the XBOX controller's bindings (and the XBOX controller's bindings don't make any sense). If you go from using your mouse to adjust the onscreen throttle to using the D key to reduce throttle or start applying brake, it engages the Emergency Brake without warning, forcing your train to come to a complete stop before you start up again. Then there's the 'simple' and 'expert' controls. And the 'simple' controls are more difficult to use than the 'expert' settings, which are the real setup. Another problem I had with simple controls is that the speed limiter doesn't work with simple controls.

Graphics:
The graphics in this game aren't that impressive, but my GTX 970 still struggles to push past 20 fps in many sections of track (for no obvious reason). In the rest of the sections, it barely hits the 60 fps limit of my monitor. Anti-aliasing sucks for the amount of objects the program has to differentiate between, raise the settings much, and your framerate is unplayable. Also, I want an FOV adjuster. The standard FOV is too small.

Gameplay:
The Academy wasn't though out much, becaue most, if not all of the mission for a single engine could be done in a single level. Some levels you don't even get to drive the train at all (most actually). Why not just combine the dozen objectives into a single tutorial? I was expecting free roam to allow me to swich between lines at my lesiure, but I can't find out because the Free Roam tab gives me a blank menu. In career mode, the objectives are difficult if you haven't learned the train you're using. Once you have, it's easy to get gold rating.

World Editor:
Yes, there is a world editor so you can create your own lines or edit the ones provided... if you can learn how to use it. It is the most complicated and useless tool I've ever seen unless you've spent 1,000 training on how to use it. And for some reason, you can edit the world during a mission. Why? What would you gain? Also, if you make changes that you don't want to save, you can't simply quit the editor and just not save it. You have to undo EVERY change you've made that you're not satisfied with and save, or it won't let you leave the world editor. It's a deathtrap program.

Miscellaneous:
All of the settings for graphics are on sliders, so you don't know whether you've slid the bar enough to make any difference to the output. Also, to change ANY setting, you can't be in the middle of driving a train because the only setting available to you then are HUD style and HUD opacity. Speaking of which, the HUD was probably designed in under a day; it looks like no effort was put into it. Also, a simulator should have the ability to accelerate time, or slow it down. This doesn't. And the DLC is F***ING EXPENSIVE!!!!! $20 for a single engine!?!?!? I'll pass. HANDS DOWN.

In conclusion:
I bought this game when it was on sale for $8.50, and that's about all that it's worth. It's unfinished, boring, doesn't know whether it wants to be a sim or a game, and very poorly optimized.

Every time I play this game, the review I post gets better. It is very smooth at high settings on a single gtx 970, the graphics are beautiful, and if you experience a game crash, that should fix itself once you veritfy the integrity of your local files. Still some minor bugs in the graphical region, as well as people jumping 4 feet in order to clear the base of a lamppost, but mostly, the game is good and I can finally say without hesitation that I would recommend it.

P.S: You don't need a GTX 680 to run this game. It can run on pretty much any laptop with discrete graphics at a playable (not beautifuly smooth) framerate, as long as the settings are reduced. It won't be 1080p, but I got playable framerate at 720p with an AMD 8770m GPU.

Valve has done it with this game. It's one of the best out there. Not just for the money, but best period. You will enjoy this game.
