Beautiful game, Beatbuddy's animations are stellar, and the music is amazing.

Unfortunately, Beatbuddy's gameplay is not as great as its aesthetics. It felt like a chore to play. The puzzles were tedious and weren't mentally challenging at all; that's basically the majority of the game (from what I played). The controls on a gamepad are passable, but the movement is floaty and I never felt like I was in total control. The music aspect, while a fun concept, ultimately hindered movement (especially while in control of the submarine), and felt more like a gimmick more than anything else. Timing button presses to move to the beat was rewarding, but often times you went too fast for the camera to catch up, resulting in Beatbuddy hugging the edges of the screen constantly and being unable to see the dangers that lie ahead.

3 hours in, I managed to softlock the game by simply dying. I restarted at a checkpoint, and the bass drum plant that I needed to break a wall to progress wasn't working, and there was no way to backtrack. Even after restarting at the checkpoint several times, the bass drum launcher was still disabled. That was the final nail in the coffin.

It was just boring. I was waiting for some exciting gameplay, but it never clicked for me.
