Allright, for an idle game this is probably quite good. You don't have to clickspam to play it, there's some limited thinking involved in setting up your party formation, and it tries at least half heartedly to give the illusion of RPG by having you embark on small module feeling adventures with little snippets of story telling in them.

That said, this is a horrid use of the D&D name and a lazy attempt at a quick buck in the idle games genre from WotC.

The tacticery really doesn't matter. It is easy enough to figure out how to get a good line of dps with support behind them figured out, and once that is done the party abilities such as shields and healing matter precious little, you still need to idle and wait for those big dps upgrades to progress.

The adventures are also very poorly written. Not an abundance of typos, but it reeks of being written by an intern with zero experience in good writing. Predictably there is also zero RPG going on, you are just along for the ride. Which one can say is fine I guess as this is not an RPG, but a idle clicker masquerading as one.

The monetization also feels very stiff. After 4 hours I was given two chests, one 'silver' and one 'gold' with the first giving only some gold and 1 bad equipment piece, and the gold chest giving three gear pieces, one with higher rarity.

You can purchase gold chests with 'Gems' earned after bosses and upon completing adventures as well. I am at something like 300 gems out of 5000 gems needed to purchase a gold chest. There's a 10% chance to get an 'epic' item from a gold chest, and there are an extra tier of 'golden epic' items that can only be earned for real money. This game is blatantly designed to not let you have any kind of fun unless you pay for it.

So yeah. Not for me, and not for people wanting to play a good game. Its greedy, RPG enthusiasts will feel sorry for Minsc and others for seeing their names on this thing, and if this as an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ D&D game is supposed to draw attention to their proper RPG's, it fails spectacularily at that.

But as an idle clicker which arguably barely qualifies to be called a game, it isn't so bad I guess. As a bonus I did get a small smirk out of imagining a player at a table rolling D20's for days when an upgraded Minsc swings for 100 trillion damage at a time.

Despite CC, and despite being a pretty shallow RPG, Fallout 4 is a wonderful 'action survival shooter crafting and building' game, which while lacking in roleplaying choice and consequences, delivers in Fallout tragedy and goofiness.

Got this game about a month ago, as I've been waiting for a good discount on it. I have played it obsessively since then and can honestly say I've enjoyed myself every step of the way through a normal playthrough and currently pretty deep into my second character in 'survival difficulty'.

Lets start with the negatives and potential deal breakers for new players:

- Its not a very good Fallout RPG. If you compare this to the earlier games in the series expecting more of the same you will be disappointed. There are very few meaningful choices to make that impact the story outside of choosing which of the major factions you will have to wipe out to finish the story. I like the writing better than Fallout 3's, but it is still far behind the quality of 1/2 and New Vegas in my opinion.

- Skills and perks are dumbed down and fairly standard fare compared to the pros and cons perks of the first games, or the 'wild wasteland' perk from New Vegas.

- The recently added Creation Club. This thing is an abomination. Advertised as 'more like mini DLC than paid mods', this thing lets you purchase overpriced basic mods such as backpacks, new colors on your pip boy or a new power armor suit. Or the cringy Giddyup Buttercup Horse Armor. What is even more egregious is that the service downloads and installs all the mods for sale even if you don't care about using any of them. Even with the pitiful choice of mods for sale on CC so far, the install size of the game went up by over 2GB, and will only go up as more content is added to it. This is such pathetically poor design it is almost physically painful to even think about how stupid the people in charge of thumbing this feature up are in the head.

- Performance problems, in the busier downtown areas of the game. My PC isn't great so I'm okay with this, but it seems to be affecting the vast majority of other players as well. Sustaining stable 60 FPS in the busiest downtown places is but a pipe (gun) dream for most players, even on very expensive hardware. Similarily, playing with highest quality shadows and godrays on also has a completely unreasonable performance hit.

- As usual, as hefty injection of mods to fix bugs and improve various aspects of the game is required. You will want mods for letting you know what your character will say during dialog instead of just seeing options for what kind of mood you want to reply with. You will want mods for deconsolifying various aspects of the UI. You want mods for disabling companion fall damage so they dont fall off highrises becoming 'downed' and and requiring a stimpack within a short time limit (literally impossible to reach in time, if you have to go through an interior or take run a ways to take a lift or such to get down to them) before they return to wherever they were recruited from. You want mods for removing object limits in settlements. You want a sorting mod, so you can actually look at a piece of gear and compare things in a practical way.

Enough with the bad, here's what I like and love about Fallout 4:

- Mechanically, it is a FAR better action shooty game than FO3/NV.

- The most interesting game world to explore yet in the Fallout series. The Commonwealth is a big and exciting playground. You also learn more about Boston and its history in this game than you did of the places visited in the older games, props for that.

- Settlement building, while optional and ultimately a giant waste of time, are to me a very fun way to waste my time.

- While this is not a great Fallout RPG, it is most definitely a Fallout game. I've had a great time getting sucked into the many stories of tragedy and morbidity, of the delicious alternate history post apocalypse Fallout world, yet again.

- Weapon and Gear modification is a blast. Any excuse to rationalize my compulsive hoarding disorder in Bethesda games gets a thumbs up in my book.

Verdict:

I considered not recommending Fallout 4, because of the fairly big downers that are 1. Creation Club and 2. Not much RPG going on in this thing.

In the end I decided it would be unfair to the game, because I really love playing this game as a action shooter survival exploration buildy crafty game, thinking of it as a better Borderlands game. Fallout 4 does that exceptionally well, and because of that this review lands with a thumbs up from me.

I would definitely recommend picking this game up during a discount.

Street Fighter V
Released: Feb 2016
Developed and Published by: Capcom
Reviewer experience at time of review: 600 hours, almost all of it casually playing private lobbies, Gold as highest rank

Short Version: SFV launched far too early as a very barebones game which did permanent damage to its reputation and popularity. A good year later, much of the initial complaints have been adressed, and SFV is today a more complete experience. It has a big roster, all of which can be earned with ingame currency, it is easy to learn, not nearly as hard to master as most other fighting games, and has online netcode that mostly works well and feels like offline play when it does.

Stuff thats good:
  • Easy to understand and play, high damage combos can be learned by everyone, and then executed with consistency thanks to all combos having more generous frame link windows than earlier iterations. Good riddance, 1/2 frame links.
  • Characters are mostly well balanced. Sure, there are tier lists and there are matchups that will favour one fighter over the other, but it is nowhere near as crushingly unbeatable as some matchups were in USFIV.
  • While not without its particular issues, the online netcode tends to make most online matches play well.
  • Fully functional cross-platform online multiplayer with the PS4 version of the game means PC SFV will never be in danger of becoming a 'ghost town' online.
  • Though there are inconsistencies, visual and audio design is generally well done. The playable characters all look great with passable voice actors, battle audio effects are nice and crunchy, and (of course, personal taste) most of the music works very well for me.
  • A monetization scheme where all characters can be unlocked with ingame currency, if you spend enough time grinding it. Other misc costumes and titles etc also unlocked with the 'Fight Money' ingame currency.
  • Though it took very long to actually get implemented post launch, pretty amusing singleplayer story mode. Its not GOOD, but I appreciate that its there.
Stuff thats not so good:
  • Compared to USFIV and many other fighting games, there is less room for applying personal style to your gameplay. There are overall less options for ridiculous combos, and because 'FADC' (focus attack dash cancel) is not in this game you can't 'custom combo' at all, leading to what ultimately feels like a less advanced game than its earlier versions. The removal of extremely hard to execute 1 frame combos also contributes to this.
  • Grinding ingame currency is very time consuming and feels unrewarding for your time. While you can purchase all characters with enough time spent grinding, it is a serious time investment.
  • Many of the stages look bad. Awful poly count, low resolution textures and animated at 30 FPS which really clashes against the 60 FPS fighters in the foreground.
  • When the netcode isn't good, its pretty awful. SFV netcode features 'one sided roll back', which means one fighter might have a smooth and perfect looking game experience online, while his opponent may at the same time be tearing his hair out in frustration of 'teleporting' and erratic movements making the matches very hard to play.
  • The online match finder doesn't consider packet loss when measuring the connection quality of the opponent, just the connection speed. Meaning you search for '5 bar' (best connection quality) opponents, and often have the game match you with a dude playing on wifi in his basement connected to the router 2 floors up. The match finder is also far too lenient on what it considers a '5 bar' connection, occasionally matching you up with players on other continents and trying to make you think the connection is good.
  • PC players wanting a 100% content complete game are out of luck, because of Capcom's funding deals with Sony there are a number of PS4 exclusive cosmetic DLC.

Verdict:
After two seasons of DLC characters added to the game (with one more season coming), and various other additions to the game, SFV is to me starting to finally feel like a properly feature complete game. The core gameplay has since day one been very satisfying for someone like me who is really enthusiastic about fighting games, but lack the motivation to train for hours and hours just to be able to execute bread and butter combos.

It is at the moment in a pretty good spot, apart from certain characters having been nerfed a little too hard (Poor Ryu), but as crazy as it sounds I have faith that Capcom will turn that back around with the next major balance overhaul planned when SFV recieves its coming 'Arcade Edition' update, which will add numerous things for all characters.

If you're looking for a fighting game that isn't a mountain to overcome to just understand the basics of, something you can pick up and play in a reasonable amount of time, and enjoys a healthy online playerbase, then SFV comes easy to recommend, from me.

Collectible card game in the style of Magic: The Gathering, Hearthstone, Elder Scrolls: Legends and similar. Plays like a mix of HS and MtG, with fewer random effect cards, block declare phase on enemy turns and interrupt phases for quick spells.

Offers many play modes including online ranked and casual modes, timed events, and REAL draft modes (keep what you pick from packs), as well as plenty of single player campaigns, the draft style Forge mode, and a free to play option to farm for cards in the Gauntlet mode.

Stylish presentation. Bit weak on the music side, but otherwise high quality art, animation and UI design. Easily the most rewarding, true free to play card game on the market thanks to very generous heaps of packs thrown at the player and the resources gained for 'dusting' surplus cards giving you resources to craft just what you need for your decks.

Other negative points to mention about Eternal include matches often feeling like they are lost because of poor luck with draws, something shared with most other classic styled card games.

Eternal has also long outstayed its welcome in Early Access, with three full card expansions and several single player expansions under its belt, making the entry point for newer players feel a little daunting (hang in there, though! clever players can still hit very high ranks in online modes with the limited resources available.)

In summary, Eternal has so much going for it, I can easily say I feel it is the most promising CCG on the market currently, it is very enjoyable as it is and keeps getting better with every update.

Note that the volume of negative reviews this game has is because of the inclusion of RedShell, causing a lot of negative reviews out of paranoia. If you're concerned about your privacy, I advice you to read up on RedShell and what it is and does, and then decide if it is a deal breaker for you. I will not discuss whether or not RedShell is malware in the comments of this review.

In the words of Adam Smith of RPS: Glorious nonsense.

Sums it up pretty nicely but if you need more:

Bayonetta is the PC port of one of PlatinumGames' finest action biffathons.

Port report:
Outside of most of the AA options not working properly and some odd glitches in cinematics at 2k/4k resolutions, Bayonetta has never looked or played better. Its a good port that should run well on most hardware. Controller strongly recommended.

About the game:
Some of the finest tuned and satisfying spectacle fighting we've seen yet, and this game is getting a bit on in the years now. It is super responsive with LOTS of attack variations, ridiculously violent, lots of refreshingly super weird enemies to crush, and the action is so fast you don't even really have time to notice that Bayonetta's 'clothes' (cause they're not actually clothes you see) disappear off her body when she magics it up.

Lots of japanese weirdness, I'm loving it but I understand that it might be a turn off for others. Oh and much sexytimes, Bayonetta rarely goes more than a minute without lewd poses or going au naturelle. I personally feel like it is done on 'her terms' as a character but you know, if you have a problem with seeing some skin now and then, maybe not play this game.

One of the worst PC port jobs EVER, in any time paradox, of an acceptable Final Fantasy game that absolutely has its moments, in between various problems.

Pros:
  • The same excellent ATB (Active Time Battle) system from the previous game, this time fully featured right from the start of the game instead of slowly fleshing it out over the course of 15 hours like in the first XIII.
  • In battles, instead of a third party member you instead use tamed monsters that can level up and be infused with powers from other monsters. Very pokemon, must catch them all. Or just get a chocobo and use it exclusively, like me <3
  • Complete freedom in when and how to progress the main story, and what times and places to visit. Almost overwhelming nonlinearity if you're used to XIII.
  • Seeing how paradoxes affect the history, then resolving them and seeing how that changes the timeline and sometimes creating new paradoxes feels pretty cool.
  • At times, pretty dark stuff in the story. Feels were had, no spoilers.
  • Passable english voice acting. Hey, you all know how rare it is for it not be dog awful, let me put this as a positive! :)
  • Good amount of 'work' for completionists. Hunt all the things, tame them, map the places, unlock all the fragments. Definitely enough to keep you busy for a while, and then there's more challenging encounters to try as well.
  • Phenomenal art and sound direction. This is a gorgeous looking game despite being 6 years old already. Some of the music might not hit home depending on personal tastes but there was also some really captivating tracks.

Cons:
  • The WORST port job I've ever seen. This game makes Batman: Arkham Knight look like a decent port. If you try playing this game with the specs listed as recommended on the store page expect frequent dips to 15 fps or lower. Game runs on a single CPU core, while barely working your GPU. The only way you're going to see acceptable framerates on this game is with a very high clock speed CPU (4.5ghz or higher at least). I see frequent dips below 30 on my i7 core quad @3.4ghz with hyperthreading disabled and slight overclocking. Doesn't matter if I play at 720p or 4k resolution.
  • No volume sliders, at all. Really?
  • Overall weak game story that didn't grab me at all or really go anywhere, once the starting plotline was established. Complete lack of character development, lots of mystery solving through time.
  • Aggravating ending, without spoiling anything, that follows into DLC stuff afterwards in a way that makes NO sense at all.
  • There's a lot of great music in this game including many revisits from the first XIII, but also a number of really whack and completely misplaced tracks, going from slow jpop ballads to black metal choboco songs at the drop of a beat. Its jarring, at times.
  • Its easy to get 'lost'. In my 60 hour ish playthrough I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say I spent at least 5 hours running around aimlessly wondering what to do. Side quests are often extremely vague in how to solve them, and even the main quests can be difficult to follow at times.
  • While tamed monsters are fun to use in battles I still prefer how they did it in the first game. It does get stale having Serah and Noel fixed as two of three party members at all times. Tamed monsters have a 'feral link' charged ability that replaces Eidolons from the first game, but they are typically very underwhelming and mainly used to finish off untamed enemies to increase the chance of catching them. Lots of abilities are also unexplicably gone from the first game as learnable skills for Serah and Noel.
  • All fights are randomly spawning encounters instead of enemies wandering around in the game world. Enemies teleport right into your near proximity, giving you a chance to strike first for a haste buff and bonus stagger, but just as often combat starts instantly because the monster spawned literally in your face as you were walking somewhere, giving you zero chance to react. In some areas the encounter chances are absurdly high, rarely letting you take more than 5 steps between fights.

Pro and Con:
  • The Steam version includes some DLC without extra cost, which is nice. What is not so nice is that there is a good chunk of DLC on the console versions that is not available in the PC version at all. I HATE when publishers do this. Some of the missing DLC fills in some plot holes in the story, as well.

Despite the long list of issues I have with this game, I've still had an overall good time playing it. I really liked XIII, and XIII-2 gave me some of the continuation I've been craving. If you were a fan of XIII (Hey, we exist! Don't judge!), you are probably going to get some value out of this game as well.

I really like the dynamic and fluid style of battle in the XIII games and I enjoyed returning to it, a good while after I initially played XIII on my PS3. It is strangely satisfying to watch your characters and monsters get gradually stronger over the course of the game, as well as hunting monsters to tame and figuring out what to do with them.

Bad port, not a bad game. I do cautiously recommend, but perhaps get it for your console instead of Steam if at all possible. If you do play it on PC, I strongly recommend using your GPU drivers or 3rd party app to cap your framerate to 30 to avoid the wild fluctuations, it does ♥♥♥♥ but at least you won't get sick. I also recommend playing with a controller, if you have one. And if you haven't played XIII yet, definitely start there before you pick this one up.

Also important: If you don't turn off Steam Cloud Saving for this game you can expect extreme load times and having the game crash to desktop.

In closing I want to have it pointed out that a lot of the negative reviews on Steam for this game seems to be because of crash issues, which I'm sure could have resolved in the majority of the cases if they disabled the abovementioned cloud sync. I'm NOT making excuses for the horrid port quality here, but the game should at least run without crashing for most players.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed
Developed by: Sumo Digital
Published by: SEGA
Released: Nov 2012 (Consoles), Jan 2013 (Steam), Jan 2014 (IOS & Android), Oct 2016 (Backwards compat. for Xbox One)

In short:

Without a contest the finest Kart racing game released on PC.

  • Excellent port from the console versions, runs great, plays great with both keys or a controller.
  • Large selection of tracks themed around classic Sega games, full of alternate routes and 'interactive' track changes, all featuring sections where your vehicles transform into either flying machines or speed boats.
  • Plenty of single player content, very challenging on higher difficulties, but of course where the game shines is in multiplayer.
  • Supports local co-op up to four players, and also lets you play local co-op in online multiplayer. Excellent net code, I've never noticed typical lag in friend or public lobbies.

If you plan to go it alone be warned though, while there is an online playerbase still for the game it is pretty small. Still , well worth having in your Steam library for those rare cases of couch co-op opportunities, or if you can round up some online friends for races.

Mobius Final Fantasy
Developed & Published by: Square Enix Co., LTD
Released: June 2015 (Japan Mobile), August 2016 (International Mobile), February 2017 (International Steam)

Impressions after ~17hrs:

  • Initial launch problems causing many players to have saves on the Korean server, switching to international requires full progress wipe including loss of goods purchased with microtransactions
  • Despite some traces of phone-game interface elements ('tap screen' messages, many menues requiring swiping), top notch visuals, sound and music. Easily rivals the eyecandy factor of the PS3 FF XIII releases, blows my mind that this is a phone game in that regard.
  • Awful english voice actors. Just as you'd expect.
  • Cringy story. No spoilers, but what I've seen so far is extremely janky.
  • Engaging and addicting battle system, complete with cryptic status effects, and abilities of various elements which counter/resist others. If you're into final fantasy style battles, the hours just fly away on this game, its scary.
  • Lots of loved (or hated) familiar faces from earlier FF games to collect as jobs, abilities and/or story-things with.
  • So far, haven't felt overly restricted by not purchasing extra services in-game. There is a stamina per battle system, but you'll never see it drained in the first 6 hours of play, and it regenerates decently fast, enough for two or three sessions per day of about an hour each. You also get a constant slow tricke of premium currency, so you're never truly pay walled. I would recommend reading some tips on where to use Magicite and Summoning Tickets before you go shopping with them, however.

I went into this with the lowest of expectations, and so far I'm blown away by this game. To me this is easily the best phone game I've played, both as a phone game AND as a PC port. I you're in the market for some F2P mostly battle focused JRPG, there's far worse places to start than with Mobius Final Fantasy.

Superbly entertaining online co-op game for up to four players from the developers of Magicka. Also lets you play local co-op in online sessions with other people, something seen far too rarely.

Feel like complete bad asses with your friends when you perfectly execute challenging, procedurally generated missions.

Make mortal enemies of your friends when you stab them, grenade them, get them killed with your turrets or drive over them with your tank/bike/walking robot thingies, thanks to Helldivers' full friendly fire.

Stuff that's not so hot about the game include a vast amount of gear locked behind paid DLC, some of which is arguably necessary for tackling the highest difficulties.

Much like Magicka, this game's probably a rather lonely and sad experience if you want to play it singleplayer.

Also if you're a graphics afficionado who demands your €2000 PC get a full work out running your games, this is not the game for that. It wouldn't hurt to have some options for higher resolution textures and quality lighting and such. (You rarely have time to stop and really reflect upon this between the battles, though)

Couchy's thoughts on Civ VI:

Great base game that innovates on the classic Civilization formula in many areas. It is genuinely fun to 'learn to civ' again for the x'th time, but bugs, features that you'd expect strangely missing, an especially helpless AI for the opponent Leaders as well as blatant exploits gradually do their part in making the whole exercise increasingly pointless.

Great game. Needs a great deal of bugs and exploits fixed. As well as features missing from V put back into VI WITHOUT making it part of the next DLC, thank you very much. It also needs said improvements incoming sooner rather than later, as I feel I've completely wasted the last 15-20 hours I put into the game after bugs ruined the goal of victory I had been working towards since the start. Don't see myself picking this title up again until it is in a better condition. Huge let down, at this price point you expect a game to be released in a much better shape than this.

While the single player AI soon becomes annoying to deal with to the point you soon stop caring to even read what they say when they contact you, Civ VI in multiplayer has so far been a great experience. We had some occational disconnects during the first days after launch, but have not experienced any multiplayer specific game stopping bugs or desyncs.

Still gonna recommend the game though, its very fun despite all the flaws and shortcomings I whine about. Going to be a Civ game for the times if it gets the many fixes and improvements it needs.
