Simply put THE best endless runner game to date. Looks great, controls better, and sounds fantastic. Stuff to collect and decently challenging for the completionists, and there's also the lure of replaying levels to beat your friends' scores on the leaderboards.

On some levels the background visuals don't blend well with the foreground which can (at least for me) cause some eye strain after extended play.

A great title with a sensible price tag.

This game looks a hippie acid trip, but under the simple looking design is a RTS with more depth than meets the eye. Colonise asteroids with seedlings, grow pretty trees with exploding laser flowers and conquer all, while listening to the zen ambient music.

Pros:
+ Pretty, minimalist art style
+ Lovely soundtrack
+ Play your own pace in relaxed mode or hectic RTS style
+ Challenging, especially once Skirmishes and Dark Matter mode are unlocked after the campaign is complete

Cons:
- HD update replaced the original UI with a tablet friendly one that quite frankly works worse for a mouse+keys player
- HD in the game title is quite misleading, nothing has been done with the visuals. The title change was made because this version is a unified version of the game, identical across all release platforms.

Updated review 02/01-15:

A very enjoyable racing game. There's normal races, hot pursuit, 1v1 duels, and time trials. Wide variety of sexy licenced vehicles to drive. Looks great for its age with optional HD textures.

The car handling feels great if you like drifting, the vehicles feel heavy and going sideways through the turns at high speeds just feels good. All the cars behave very different as well, from the Bentleys that feel like you're driving a tank, to the super responsive Pagani, each suited for different races and game modes.

Features Autolog, an early iteration of the social features we take for granted in today's games. Its a bit fiddly and requires an EA account, of course not linked to Steam, but with some friends added it gives the singleplayer modes a competitive edge thanks to the Speedwall.

To get the most out of this game you need to find people to race online, but except during Steam sales there's not many playing. See http://steamcharts.com/app/47870#3m for details. At least the servers are still running which is more than can be said for Gran Turismo 5, for example.

If you're not bothered with multiplayer, there's still fun to be had here but playing through the 'campaign' won't hold you for that many hours.

If you use Windows 8.1 be warned, you might run into nasty frame drops.

Early impressions: Enjoyable co-op zombie smashing with the perspective and mechanics we're used to from MOBAs. From what I've seen so far the game modes are different than the lane control tug of war style maps used in LoL and DOTA 2. Glad to see the crafting system made it over from the original. For the grand cost of nothing this is definitely worth a try!

This game is an instant legend for the ages, and also one of the ugliest looking titles I've played in a long time. You forget all that within a few short seconds of actually playing the thing. I haven't played a brawler this wildly entertaining since Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Video Game, controlled using just left+right mouse buttons, or a controller. I don't think I can capture in words how awesome the "**** yeah" moments are that I get every second of the way. The controls are simple and responsive, the feeling of impact that every attack has on these stick figures is just ridiculous (in the best possible way), and the ass kicking kung fu themes that play while you get your murder face on just seals the deal.

I can not recommend this game enough, which is frustrating because I know how meh it looks just looking at screenshots or even watching lets plays. If you ever enjoyed playing a brawler or beat em up style game, you will have one heck of a time playing, re-playing and perfecting your one finger martial arts on this game.

Hack/Fireball/Loot-em-up done the way Diablo II did and developed by some of the same people. The spells are flashy, the gibs plentiful, and the combat and character control is tight and responsive, with proper specialization skill trees to mess your characters up in, and none of that Diablo III skill-dumbing down. The game has an appealing (to me) comic art style with rich colours and has a soundtrack by Matt Uelmen, the man behind the wonderful Diablo 1+2 soundtracks.

Play singleplayer (without always on DRM), online or even LAN. Lots of workshop mods to tinker with (online, too), ranging from UI tweaks and loot table adjustments to massive total conversion type mods. There's difficulty modes for all skill levels and the good old hardcore permadeath, for the truly masochistic.

Torchlight II is a must have for all of you with fond memories of dungeon crawling and loot hunting in the older Diablo games.

The online netcode/engine on this game has serious issues, your match will lag horribly and do frequent rollbacks or other times make you do a full combo thinking you are hitting stuff only to find out your opponent blocked something underway and punished you. Its good online IF you fight opponents with a good pc and stable connection. You would think this is the norm now, but it's not.

Great game, and good online if you have friends you know play with decent pc/connection. If you're just going in blind on this game though, you're going to have a bad time unfortunately.

I wrote a full review for this game back in feb 2012, it can be found here: http://ragebar.blogspot.no/2012/02/review-trackmania-2-canyon.html#more

Some of the issues (such as payment and installation hassles) I had with it then are fixed and overall I'm quite pleased with the state of the game right now.

Another nice trailer for the game here:

Updated review, since changes to the Steam client have improved online performance significantly:

What's what:

The most recent iteration of classic 2D fighting in the Street Fighter universe. 44 characters to play on or off line, and many mechanical intricacies to master, many not covered by the fairly basic tutorials. Steep learning curve, highly satisfying to master.

What's Good:

  • Large roster of well balanced characters, and fully mastering just one can be a serious commitment. Most players will never run out of new things to tackle and learn.
  • Robust net code for online play, which is always going to have some microseconds of delay compared to offline versus, but for the most part plays fluidly and works great for practice and casual matches.
  • Classic 2D fighting mechanics evolved from SF II that also offers a lot of depth. Characters can use powerful and flashy ultra combos as a powerful comeback tool. Make your attacks safe or extend a combo using Focus Attack cancels. Combos with tight execution require training, but are satisfying to master.
  • Good amount of game modes, from the barebones arcade versus CPU and the feature rich practice mode and character combo trials, to online ranked or casual lobbies and (little used) team battle and 8 player tournaments.

What's Bad:

  • Searching matches based on skill online doesn't work, causing frustration for new players and professionals alike. Its entirely possible for someone just having installed the game to be matched against an EVO competitor.
  • USFIV is showing its age visually. SFIV was never visually advanced, to make sure it ran constant 60 fps on consoles 6 years ago and hasn't seen any visual upgrades since then. Characters and especially stage backgrounds look quite ugly by today's standards.
  • Unreasonably strict combo system. This one's debatable and many will put this as one of the game's strong points. Most combos are links, meaning they have to be input after an attack animation has ended completely, as opposed to chains, where normal punches and kicks can be cancelled into other attacks. The frame window to hit these combos can be extremely narrow, often down to 1 or 2 frames precision (Using 60 frames in one second as measuring), meaning even professional players with 5000 hours and more clocked will still sometimes or often miss combo timings. I'm all for being rewarded for vigilant practice, but combo windows being this rigid is a bit too much, and can be very offputting for newer players to cope with.

Summary:

While USFIV has strong competition from other fighting games these days, it is still a very good fighting game. It lacks in tutorials and teaching how to combo and understand the finer technical points however, so new players are going to have to educate themselves outside of the game through wikis and watching a lot of high level play on YouTube or Twitch. It still enjoys a healthy player base, and despite other games competing for attention in the genre and SF V being in production, I still feel comfortable recommending Ultra Street Fighter IV for players looking to get into a fighting game, or pondering getting the PC version of it.
