I whole heartedly recommend this game. This game oozes quality from its art style, animations, sound track/effects, and variety of mechanics. The characters you interact with are fun and varied, and once you get used to it the combat is tight and satisfying. However, its a bit grindy, and I think one of the reasons why it tends to be a bit grindy is because of the stacking castle upgrade cost penalty which forces you into higher level zones, perhaps before you want to be in them. Let me explain.

Basically every time you upgrade your keep, the cost of the next upgrade is increased by a fixed amount. However the player is encouraged to spread their upgrade points shallowly because putting the first point in a new trait unlocks adjacent traits you can also put points into. This kind of leads to you putting early points into a lot of things that maybe you don't want or need yet, and neglecting things you do. And when you realize "I need more vitality" or "I need more strength", its now harder to quickly stack points into there because your stacking penalty is higher.

I think if they apply a flat 25% reduction to the stacking castle upgrade cost, the early grind would be more manageable. They just need to tweak the power curve a little more.

If you don't mind a game with some grind, then this is a fantastic choice.

Probably one of the greatest games I've ever played.

Its been a really long time since I've been sucked into a game this hard.

The polish of this game is incredible.

I've been having trouble actually enjoying games lately. Even AAA games I can barely sit down for an hour before I get bored.

I bought this on a whim, blinked, and 6 hours were gone.

No question. Its worth the money if this is your kind of thing.

Its like combat mode Factorio.

I played a lot of the original risk of rain. Its insane what how similar they made a 3D game feel to a 2D game.

The game looks nice and looks like it has a lot of promise, but it lacks depth. The skill tree is basically just for looks, it feels like completely linear progression no matter what. Grinding out money so you can feed yourself gets very repetitive and boring, like they specifically designed it to pad the game time.

Theres not enough in it to keep the game fresh. It feels like you're doing the exact same thing over and over, no matter what point in the game you're at.

It's ok for killing time, but I look back and regret the time I spent playing this game... And thats never a good sign.

I hope the people who made this never stop making games.
