Best game I've tried this year. Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass excels despite its user interface. The story and gameplay mechanics are both compelling and interwoven. Jimmy has a job system which allows for meaningful customization depending on party composition and player preference. Other characters can equip items to complement their skill loadout or to modify how their skills function. Want an accessory that'll turn your 50% ally heal into a 300% damage attack? All that and more await in the nooks and crannies of this game. Exploration ain't a chore; encounters can be skipped if you're of sufficient level, and one of Jimmy's forms has a guaranteed retreat ability. Another form tells you how many unopened toy boxes there are in an area.

Kasey designed many conveniences. That said, the game packs a decent challenge. Enemy groups can form tough combos, and the bosses themselves vary from straightforward to puzzling and even punishing. I enjoyed almost every boss fight (lookin' at you, Imaginary Numbers) and had no need to grind; for those who feel different, there's an at-will difficulty adjuster. Another convenience.

The soundtrack is memorable and wonderfully composed; you can find the music files in the game folder without buying the DLC. The graphics are serviceable and get the point across. My main complaint is the aforementioned user interface. Inventory management is a slight chore. Clubhouse furniture management is a bigger chore. There's no battle log, and messages can blink past. The game doesn't describe most status effects, so pay attention. In fact, take notes! I used a notepad to track details like unopened chests, puzzle solutions, optional areas, enemy stats, furniture combos, and so forth. That's not a slight against the game so much as my memory; there's plenty to keep track of here.

Oh, and... one more thing: You'll never love anyone as much as Jonathon Bear loves you.

Grimiff is pretty much the coolest creepy guy in a dark alley you could hope to encounter.
