I'm conflicted here because I do think there's a great game in the making here, but it's in no way ready for release or Early Access.

Gameplay loop
There's just not enough to do every day. In reality you can do one thing a day. You can either open the shop, go hunting/looting, or go buy a storage unit. Normally this would be fine but there's just not much to each gameplay element.

Opening the shop is just haggling with customers, and it's incredibly easy to extort them. Giving the customers a wallet, like/dislikes, and allowing you to recommend items would help a lot since you'd have to get to know the customer better, and the back and forth game would be more of a puzzle.

Buying the storage unit it just traveling to a planet and throwing money at a wall. There's no real gameplay, you're just spending a day to bid on random loot. Having more ways to find out what the loot could be, or ways to interact with other bidders and rig the bid would be fun.

Hunting for loot is just.. Not great. It's an extremely rudimentary first person shooter segment which doesn't feel very nice to play at all. It feels tacked on, like the devs played Recettear and thought "Yeah, we need combat.". The issue here boils down to feel (Shooting and killing enemies doesn't feel great). I was just going from room to room shooting a couple enemies and collecting a few items on the floor.

UI
The UI in Pawn Planet isn't great. It does the job once you understand what's going on, but there's quite a few issues with it.
  • No tooltip/hover text when mousing over an intractable (Repair, bed, ship, etc)
  • Repair menu doesn't tell you how long repair will take until AFTER you've committed
  • Customer stats are off in a corner of the screen, and don't feel impactful
  • I didn't notice where my health was in combat, or that it was going down until I died.
  • Opening a menu doesn't center the mouse or put themouse on the point of focus. This is an issue because the mouse cursor isn't locked during gameplay, so moving around leads to the mouse almost always being on the edges of the screen when opening a menu. Alternatively, locking the mouse when not shown would be fine.

Art
No notes, I love it. The art design is on point and it's clear a lot of thought and effort went into it.

Final notes
There's more, but I feel like that's the most important. This is a game that I hope becomes something great in the year to come, but unfortunately it currently feels like more of a late prototype. It very much feels like a game that's in the end phases of the greenlighting process at a studio, but with VERY pretty art.

One of the few games I actually finished this year. I strongly recommend it.

Fun game. It had a very rough launch, but the queue times have been fixed now.

All the people complaining about the queue honestly had unrealistic expectations. I'm not saying it's OK for MMOs to launch in this state, I'm just saying it's expected.

Should the servers have worked? Absolutely.
Should you be able to play a game you paid for? No doubt.
Should you expect a small company's first MMO to launch without server issues and queues? No shot in hell.

I've played many MMOs, and the sad truth is, this is very common. It doesn't matter what the reason for the server issues was, if you don't want to deal with queues and server issues, you should always wait at least a week before joining a new MMO.

Edit after 69 hours: Nice game.

EA review:

Incredibly polished gameplay, and incredibly unpolished menus.

Seriously, the menus are a mess. There's a huge delay between when you select something and when it happens (And if you select too many things too quickly, the game freaks out) and you'll randomly be put in queue sometimes. Thankfully, the game is so fun that I don't care haha.

This game is about as beta as beta gets; a buggy, unpolished mess that is a crazy amount of fun. I have no doubt that given a bit of patience from the community, this game could become something special.

I very strongly recommend giving this game a try and looking past the buggy and unfinished menus, focusing instead on the potential this game has.

Homophobic, transphobic conspiracy theorist. This guy clearly doesn't have the brain cells to comprehend why his psycho rants are equivalent to hate speech.

If you don't think there's anything wrong with his comments, try replacing his comments on lgbt with "Jews" or "Black people"

Get a hobby that doesn't involve hate speech, my guy, hate speech is so 1949.

As for the game, I played it a long time ago and found it dull. So dull that I didn't even remember it existed until recently.

This game looks and feels like a Gaia scene kids fever dream. It's just too much.

So far this game is a lot of fun. Strongly recommend it. I might update this review once I've put a few more hours into the game.
