I'll start just saying that this game is INSANELY good and worth it

Either to play for yourself or friends, it has many fun moments, good voice acting Hibari's voice is the worst though sorry, great character design, entertaining gameplay with amazing combo mechanics, god tier music, very cool art/CG and there's just so much.

While it's not in reality a long game if you don't plan to 100% all of it then you might not find as much worth in it, but it's still very good to entertain you and up to 3 other friends (in local at least), I've been using Parsec to play with other friends and it has been working great, I myself bought this game with the idea to 100% this game no matter if it was going to be solo or multiplayer.

When I started playing these games I did not think I'd play such a "big" game, I expected the typical beat 'em up run one way until the end, defeat some boss, game over. The shock when I figured out we had a whole map to explore freely it was actually one of the best things, surrounded by Megan's McDuffe magnificent synth and singing, honestly the music is so good and so fitting, it'd be a loss to at least not give a chance to listen to some of the music even if you're not interested in the game.
There are so many references around the game either in the enviorenment or in the conversations or characters you'll meet that's also nostalgic for some, and fun to see references from "culture" of the recent times as well, there's a lot of attention to design and writing at the very least for these parts.

My only real issue with this game is that even in nightmare difficulty it's still very easy, I think there's only one particular boss that gave me a headache, you will still die though don't get me wrong, but if you're like me you'll powercreep easily without the secret items.

The other issues is that there are a huge amount of weird bugs and issues regarding some maps, character movement, the strange 30fps lock issue as well and the game has been out for a month, at the time of this review, the latter can be dealt with if you enter the Open Beta Branch for this game so it can run 60fps.
While I can forgive some of the movement glitches and running out of the map or getting locked out (most of the time...), the game has been quite stable for me without a single crash or freeze throughout my entire journey, however, there are other weird stuff I noticed:

+ There's no actual way to set the music in hideout, it resets every now and then to the default one which kills a bit the purpose of buying the discs, but it's a minor inconvenience

+ Switching characters or retry can take the accessories off your character which you have to pay attention to put them again. (this is probably due to things being "set" per the character and not per "player")

+ Entering a hideout does NOT heal your Strikers, neither does the Sauna, which kinda should but yeah minor inconvenience (kinda...)

+ "Retry" button can sometimes not really track any progress but still take money away (Since last map entered)

+ While the UI is now improved and we're allowed to use items without going through the menu, the first game had a "multiplayer" pause which would show at least two phones at the same time and players could set whatever they wanted, the issue with this was that if a player removed the pause then both would return to the game instantly, it was probably changed due to that and 4 player implementation, but it was a cool idea in the first game that sadly didn't carry on here and can make things a bit of a slog if you play multiplayer, then again, minor inconvenience and not really game breaking.

+ Characters don't actually have many (if any?) unique voicelines in different combinations, each character will take an archetype of either "Kyoko" or "Misako" and then play their same voicelines but on a different voice acting, this is fine because there won't be any fear of missing dialogue due to choosing different characters but it is also a bit disappointing since the characters are so interesting to me. (Cutscenes do not include other voices than Kyoko or Misako (Or than the characters supposed to interact at this time of course). Keep in mind, for solo you can choose who your "Companion voice" is from pause menu > settings (This is applied per character if you do play multiple characters) which is a great setting, in multiplayer however, the voices will depend purely from "Player 1" (host) and "Player 2" (Based on which controller connected in order, and not which player joined the game...), whoever is considered Player 3 and Player 4 will have no interaction whatsoever during dialogues.

+ Spanish text translation is a bit off (but this is clearly the normal for videogames no matter what if they don't have a native speaking working on it, I guess) but it still works nonetheless for those who may need it to understand the game better.

The reason why some of these issues throw me off is mostly because it's stuff that in the first game didn't seem to happen at all and they were introduced in the sequel somehow, while I don't know nor really care much about the specifics, they were all things that caught me off guard, there are still a lot of improvements and a lot of enjoyment to get but be aware that in some situations you'll just encounter silly issues.

I haven't tried online at all but I've read complaints about it being limited for 2 players...? Which is kinda strange and it isn't the only game that does that if it's true, since I remember Streets of Rage IV do the exact same thing, making 4 player multiplayer local-exclusive (which is terrible and I don't know (nor care) from a developer point of view but from my view there's no way that should be exclusive lol).

While I think there's a lot of other things that could be added to make everything feel smoother, it's an outstanding game with a lot to give and I heavily encourage playing it, if you're not really sure about wanting to deal with a few issues or you don't think you'll play it as much it'd be perfect to wait for a sale as well. Hopefully in the future some of these issues will be addressed for people who might want to give this game a try so they may have a more enjoyable experience, or at the very least, a smoother one, it'd be a terrible that people were missing on this game over minor things.

Honestly as I'm sitting here thinking what to say or what to add I just think that I write too much, and while I still listen to the OST after I just got the 100% completionist achievement, I can only think that I'm sad there's nothing else to be done other than just replay, but you know how it is sometimes... just ain't the same.

tl;dr BUY THIS GAME it's fckin great and the whole OST is a BANGER I love it all.
and PLEASE ADD A STEAM POINTS SHOP :boohoo:

Early Access Review
If I were you, I'd buy this game right away instead of reading any of this or other reviews in this, it isn't worth to judge based on what you will read here, there are multiple reasons, but if you are so inclined, please look around and see what you can find, but you HAVE to give this game a shot.

I've played Risk of Rain 1 for too long, as a party game with local coop up to 4 players, as an online game, as a singleplayer game, as soon as Risk of Rain 2 came out, I got almost as many hours instantly, you could see this on my profile... probably.

This game is awesome to pass the time or just have a good laugh with friends, you're sent to an unknown, hostile planet, and you have to scavenge and fight your way through anything you see, this rogue-like game is all about survival.

Difficulty increases as time passes by, you can see this on the top right screen, there's a slider that will tell you how long have you been here, and what difficulty are you in, there's a point in which this game is just laughing at you because of how insane things get if you survive long enough.

In the current state of the game, even if some might say it lacks content, it has a lot of replayability, you can play solo for a long while, and play multiplayer even more, at this point if I got burnt at some point I haven't noticed because I still play it, just maybe not as often, and even with the sales here we recently just got our first content update and it's a great moment for new players to come into the game, and absorb players who were waiting for new content, right now the game might not really be in the "most difficult" phase, and it lacks a final stage and final boss, but that's fine for now, it's still enjoyable and you're still granted a way to end your runs in case you want to finish it without having to die for it.

This game has a very interesting level design, this can also be seen in the first game, most maps are nice to the eye, the environment is just great, even though when you play for long you might not be able to enjoy this since you'll be busy trying to survive, but you'll get some brief pauses for it, the early game will let you enjoy this just fine.
Also the music, the music is amazing you just can't miss it, Chris Christodoulou who made the music for the first game and DEADBOLT is an excellent composer, if you're interested on the music you should check his bandcamp or look up OST from the previous games mentioned, right now the music is an early access version so it's unfinished and we're getting more tracks with further updates, a lot of people who maybe weren't fond of the game loved the music, and it's 100% understandable.

If you haven't played Risk of Rain 1, the first game had like 12 characters, with the starting Commando, a basic character (intentionally designed to be basic of course), and you make your way through the planet unlocking other items or characters for future runs.

Right now Risk of Rain 2 can only provide with 7 characters, and from this moment until the release in Spring 2020 we'll have a total of 10 characters, even if I think the number is fine, some people might not be able to find something that really fits their playstyle, which in Risk of Rain 1 wasn't really difficult, at this very moment I only play Mercenary and at least 200hs are just playing as Mercenary, while I've played Artificer, Commando and Huntress a lot, nothing has really convinced me of something more fun, of course a lot of people will find different ways to have fun and different playstyles, but some people isn't just really sure what do they like the most, so you have to give it a try.

In any case as soon as you come down to this planet as any character you will either die instantly or snowball your way into becoming a god of war, unstoppable, fearless, and probably...soulless.

You really should give it a try and get some friends together, in case that's a bit difficult, join us in the Risk of Rain 2 Official Discord Server (you can also join us from the main menu), the community is nice for the most part and you can find a lot of help, ask questions, and sometimes, when they are around, even talk with the developers who really know how to communicate (unlike other game devs...).

Hope you have fun and either if you decide to buy this game or not, you should totally check Risk of Rain 1, have a good one!

(If you haven't played the first game then don't worry, you can still enjoy the full experience of Pathologic 2, since it's a reimagination of the original game, but playing the first game is recommended)
Be aware that this game also has a free demo, which I recommend trying before purchase since some PCs can have issues running it at the moment, the game is still being developed and further optimization can come in later updates.
Final note: If you consider yourself more of a "casual" but you really want to get into this game, do consider giving it a try after all and take your time learning the lines, if you really like it you'll be able to enjoy it, but do take your time, the game IS INTENDED to be difficult, don't let that get to you, it's just part of the experience, no Dark Souls, Darkest Dungeon, Lobotomy Corp or I Wanna Be The Guy game experience will save you here.)

If you want an easy story to follow, a linear game, a world where you can explore and interact at will, or you just want to relax, you probably don't want to be here at this very moment.
This game doesn't have an easy mode, and you will have to take responsibility for your actions... or not, depends on who you are.

Pathologic 2 it's an interesting story, you will despair through it, like it or not, if you launch this game, you're in for a challenge, depending on the kind of person you are.

If you came here to explore the world don't worry, you'll see plenty of amazing scenery all around, but you won't be going where you want to, not anytime soon, because you're now a surgeon who came to his home town looking for his father, who sent you a letter asking you to come back.
A town you left years ago and now you don't remember much, and things have changed a lot.

You're about to face an ordeal, you were summoned back to this old town because of the Sand Plague, an enemy that you can't defeat, just like your father couldn't.

The main objective is to find a cure, observe it, analyze it, study it, operate do anything necessary to stop the plague, or at least, to prevent your loved ones from being infected.

But you can't save everyone, you can't do everything, if you think you can launch this game right away and prove it, don't worry I know you won't be able to.

The game has an immersive story, and things won't just happen by themselves, you'll find yourself in a big town with a lot of things to do, many tasks to be done, people to meet, places to go, things to find, and many, many curious and confusing events, if you like surprises then this is for you, you won't even believe how many things there are in this game once you start playing.

The world goes on with or without you, you have 12 days to complete your mission, and just like it happens in our daily lives, time waits for no one, it's up to you to decide how you handle your activities through each day, think ahead of time while you experience the story, as it will help you a lot.
Don't worry if you do miss an event or any task in particular, this game will keep going until the very end, and I'm sure you won't have enough, you WILL play it again, even more than you might think.

As time goes on, so does people, as usually seen in difficult times, the town will change, events will take place, the people might do something crazy when they don't see a solution to their problems, the prices might go up, the places you used to visit tomorrow might be most dangerous, people are still living and working even if you're not looking over them, and they will go through things, even very difficult ones, and you would be of great help, if you want to help, so you might ease their burden (Or become a burden for them... Depending on you.), however be aware that even if you are looking over them or not, or even if you help, it might not be enough, sometimes things are out of our control or reach, and we can't let regret take over us, some things aren't bound to happen, be sure to watch over the ones you appreciate the most whenever possible, but don't forget about yourself too, what would we do without you?

Finally, there's you, you are also living and moving and working and doing everything you can (Are you?) to complete your objectives, and so you will get tired, you will get hungry, you will get thirsty, you will struggle, you might get infected, the night comes, there's a lot of things to do and maybe you didn't have time to check upon others, but it would be very, very bad if something were to happen to you, this game is mainly about survival, it will test your mind to see how far can you go being selfless, or selfish (Maybe a bit of both?), how good are you at handling resources, can you really survive in this town after all?
Did you make the right choice? Maybe if you make a bit of sacrifice it would be benefitial to others too, and it will be paid back eventually, that'd be very benefitial... But we don't do good things expecting favors from others, do we? (If you do so, I might as well say that you're a fool.) Do whatever you think is right as long as you survive, and do not regret, or you will spend a long amount of time in here.

I can say so since I have 31hs and I'm stuck in Day 7, trying to make things happen, and I recently found that I can't do it, it's too late, and I don't have other choices besides keep going, or start all over again.
So here we are again, no one's asking us

Finally I'll go through some of the basic mechanics of this game in case the wall of text above wasn't clear enough.

In this game we have an in-game clock, time is related to events and activities, and the days will pass, there are events that can be finished in 1 day, and others that will take longer, you won't be able to tell which is which. (Time is paused during certain interactions, menus, and talking with NPCs)

Every important NPC can die in this game, don't take them for granted, it's up to you to take care of them since that's your duty as a doctor, but won't really be forced to if you don't want to... Hope you don't regret it if you let anything happen to them.

The character we play as has needs like everyone else, we got a health bar, a hunger bar, an exhaustion bar, an stamina/thirst bar and an immunity/infection bar, is up to you when and how you eat/sleep/hydrate/mend your wounds, don't forget.

Your actions can (and most probably will) have consequences, but in times of need there are many things you could find in houses, perhaps an abandoned house... Unless you're willing to steal from your fellow townsfolk? Maybe a house in an infected district would do.
Make the wrong choices and people won't trust you anymore, and I'm sure you wouldn't like that, so watch your reputation, don't abuse the trust people put on you, which is often, hard to obtain.

The game also has a fair amount of "mini-games" regarding your profession as a surgeon, these are fun and very well made, easy to understand but they do require a bit of memory, don't worry, the game will explain the rules very clearly.

If you made up your mind to play this game after reading all the way to this point, then I'm sure you'll enjoy it a lot, but do understand this isn't your usual game, you're not a hero, you're not a superhuman, you're just a doctor, and one of the best we have, but you're just like any other person, you will struggle, you will get a bit lost at times, maybe even confused, but don't let it get to you, if this game happens to be too much for you sometimes give it some time, and I'd even suggest that you start over again with now more experience and information about what to do and when.

My final words are:
Don't die... if you do, we will remember.

But don't be afraid to, it happens to the best of us.
