HOLLOW KNIGHT: The Review

Wow, where to begin? From the rich and unique design choices within this game: the biomes , the characters the deep and entangled story. Hollow Knight has it all.
To be honest when I started off playing Hollow Knight alot was kinda offputting to me. Not only do i come from the F.P.S. side of gaming I also rarely pick up let alone finish single-player games. yet something kept me going on this adventure, something at the time I didn't know what it is.

Ofcourse the way Hollow Knight looks is extremely unique, the game being hand-drawn in an 2D engine is more than interesting and something extremely satisfying with how smooth they got this too look, but the further I went through the "tutorial" level above the town before the broken-bridge. the more interested i became what I was gonna see next, and I think there has been no game besides this very game that kept my interest THIS peeked.

Picking up the combat shortly after the tutorial was fun but challenging , it was very clear from the get go that this combat-system was easy to pick up and hard to master. For some reason I felt satisfaction in every little bug-enemy i killed, it felt like a proper fight. I can't lie the first few times the normal minions even got the best of me! But that didn't let me to close the game, what i normally would do to most singleplayers. I launched back in and this time I defeated that minion that killed me. This made me feel some way of growth in my skill within the game, Making my path down to the first boss where I got my ass handed over and over.

And now the interesting part of this game came to life for me, see I am not familiar with metroidvania's. heck the closest i came to this genre was picking up Ori and the will of the wisps for about 10 minutes before it became too frustrating and quit on it for an refund. But like I mentioned: this game got something different out of me: something i never expected.

I decided on respawn to maybe change my route , look for something different were i came across the path system. ofcourse the "intro-boss" is almost forced upon you because you need the crest of the city at some point but I discovered through killing more minions , getting better with my nail-tech and through there earning in-game currency i could upgrade my gear and items.

Soon I overtopped the first boss and the ball slowly started to roll while i took my own unique adventure through Hollow Knight. And that is exactly what I am trying to say, this game does not have a wrong playstyle: Do you want to fight bare naked against the first boss and end him off ASAP: go ahead! Do you think this poses an challenge? Why don't you stick around and get a bit stronger and come back to him! He will always be there.

Now once you get the ball rolling and you see what this game has to offer, the areas the story and the friends and foes u meet on the way. Its extremely clear what makes this game so addictive. What pulls you in so deep: what that is? I couldn't spoiler it, it would ruin all the fun for you: the reader never heard about Hollow Knight!

For that you have to dive into this game yourself , and if you are asking me if the "price is worth the game" well like many many reviews on this game I will tell you once again: An AAA game charging you 70/80 euro's maybe on sale 40? with a worse story , worse gameplay , worse replayability. I am 100% sure team cherry could ask the bare minimum, enough to keep their studio alive and continue onto their new Hollow Knight project.

I wait with optimism to the next chapter in this amazing games life. And I will be as happy to play that game as I was with this one, Team Cherry never fails to impress.

Even if they push the game back another year out of the many they have, I will be eager to pick it up as soon as its out.

Try the game , knight. there is an adventure waiting for you.

A Honest review to SoT:

Yes, it is fun. Yes, you will have fun for the first 20 hours exploring and learning the game. But after 30/40 hours you sadly realise its the same stuff over and over again.

Even the "Pirate Legend" stuff you are supposed to grind for is a joke because when you finally hit it and you can go to the "Legendary Pirate Hide-Out" you end up even dissapointed more to realise the Athena voyages are just mashed together voyages from all other companies.

Honestly don't let anyone with 100+ hours tell you there is something to do and explore , THERE. IS. NOT.
You WILL get bored after a decent time , even with: friends , open crews and discord made crews.

But hey if you like mentally punishing yourself waste 3+ hours of your time by getting sunk and doing all the stuff over again. 10/10.

If you like to keep your sanity, search for a different game to grind.

- A honest pirate.
