*I HIGHLIGHT BOTH WHAT I THOUGHT WAS GOOD AND BAD IN THIS REVIEW DONT THINK IM JUST DUNKING ON IT FOR NO REASON*

i didnt think i would be ready to leave this game iv been waiting 3 years for after 7 hours,
there is a lot of good here, but the bad is fundamental imo. i think this game would be a 100% recommend at a lower price

the combo system is too easy
i havent felt very challenged trying to go for combos in this game, my highest combo is only a 3.4m because getting to that number felt really underwhelming and meaningless, your trick timing doesnt need to be precise, you dont lose anything by doing long moves and interrupting the animation, and spamming tricks is slower but there isnt really any punishment for it. i think manuals are a great mechanic for this game, but it also has pretty much no drawbacks, just that after a certain amount of time you cant hold it. these mechanics need a little spice, especially when things like crew battles depend on it so much. and i dont like the way the score multiplier works, leaning into corners and doing wallrides for combo multipliers seems fine because it forces you to do a lot of stuff across the map, but in combination with a limited trick list, it just starts to feel like cheese when you are going for high scores. you pretty much just spam x y b on rails with some jump tricks inbetween until you leaned into every corner and hit every billboard. the combo system feels void of skill and meaning as soon as you fully learn how it works. I love, and still play thugpro for those juicy combos, 14m means a lot more there than it does here. this was clearly designed for a more casual player (which is fine) but it isnt fulfilling to me

some maps are too large and linear
some maps (like the mall) add few exceptions for original lines, and it feels very limiting, the best jsr maps were the ones that were compact and full of different options. i feel like i havent been happy with a map past the mall to be honest. a lot of maps are abundant in some places, and void in others, its as if someone marked a spot to be finished later but just never did. the segmentation of maps feels awkward and limiting to traverse, it feels cool when you just unlocked a new section, but it usually doesnt flow well afterwards

aside from what i didnt like,
the animations are great, like seriously amazing
outfits/recolors are cool
ost is nice
artstyle is executed very well
the story is fine, pretty repetitive after a bit, but it isnt difficult
some characters could be more interesting/memorable but i overall like their designs
combat is eh, needed more time in the oven
different sports to choose from while tricking across all of them feels consistent to one another, whether that be for better or for worse
day 1 dlc is not favorable, but it doesnt cost much

in conclusion,
this game has just enough depth for the casual, but not enough for some others, and i think thats alright. i expected more of this game, but maybe thats just on me

(this is a review for the 3rd episode and the 3rd episode only)

another game i wish i could rate neutral :P
13 dollars isnt a whole lot for this and i feel a bit bad for being critical, but im a student without a job, so 13 dollars isnt the same for me; take this review at your own discretion because you could end up liking butterflies for the price!

i found butterflies to be an overall... interesting experience, one with much potential though.

this game obviously had a lot of passion put into it, i respect that. however, there are just too many flaws to pass pass up for me. i feel like it takes a lot of inspiration from the very obvious JSR, but doesnt exactly return much (aside from the feeling of different physics and engine)

overall lack of direction
no tutorial, a very rushed intro, and a bunch of tiresome graffiti minigames. not even a binds menu to see what i can do. i hardly feel connected or introduced to this world, i just couldnt get invested enough to keep playing.

questionable movement
the movement takes a little bit of getting used to, overall i think it could be a lot faster, the speed at which you sprint (holding R2) should be default honestly. the map i was playing was pretty large, and because i wasnt even introduced to the sprinting mechanic, i was just getting frustrated trying to move around. you need to go faster by default on rails (or at least gain momentum going up hills and such). i think the wallrunning is great, i always wished i could just wallrun everywhere in JSR.

misc
i just dont like the idea of an episodic structure as a consumer, it makes sense as a developer (you get new purchases to support yourself when you add new content) but as a consumer it concerns me that im paying 13 dollars for an experience that will eventually be abandoned, making me purchase the next episodes for improved gameplay (which will presumably be the same price or more). this episodic structure also makes it REALLY confusing to buy the game in the first place, i had to go to the discord and ask how to buy this game (in which the person who helped me wasnt 100% sure of how to do it in the first place). for context, you cant buy dlc without owning the base game its attached to. turns out that the launcher (tagged as the base game) is attached to a bundle with episode 3, which also happens to be the most expensive episode. i wanted to buy episode 1, but with this structure i would have to spend around 18 dollars as opposed to 5.

the ost is pretty good, i honestly didnt run into a single bad song in my playtime.

the flow of the map was just kinda weird, some areas were abundant, some areas were empty, and maybe this is just a skill issue where im not thinking creatively enough, but i just couldnt establish a very good line/combo that spanned a larger portion of the map. and the map did visually fit the style, but i think it looks a bit dull :(

overall, episode 3 felt like a beta/demo, im just not sure if its worth the price to have something i feel is missing things i need in order to have fun, especially because it could be abandoned for the next episode at any time.

once again, this game has a lot of potential, if you wish to support the dev now and see what comes next, please do! there is so so so much potential here.

i know im late, but first and foremost, bulkhead mislead everyone with this release. they announced that promod changed to killrun and discontinued the multiplier a single week before launch. a lot of fumbles have come out of bulkhead so far

played for about four hours after not playing for a few months, got the |=][/\/@|_ I3()$$ achievement (get 10 pro times per map pack in the main mode) i think i can speak pretty certainly on the maps. the last map pack really feels like they didnt care and just had to meet a quota, they relied so much on powerups and throw way more enemies at you than needed, it stopped being a movement game at times. they also abandoned jumper after 2 map packs which is quite unfortunate.

movement is good ofc, experienced cod4 players will have fun here. they made some more tutorial stuff for beginners too

i like the unlockable modkits, but i dont like how i have to buy ANOTHER game of theirs to get the undc rifle, and the unlockables pertaining to the aim trainer are kinda dumb, i feel like something jumper related there would be cool (those levels do have pro times but they r hidden)

lastly, i dont really understand why they canned mp, im pretty sure they weren't the ones hosting servers. i wouldve been less disappointed if the mp released as it was in the beta

TL:DR
if u want a speedrunning game with cod4 movement, look no further; but from my previous experience with the early access versions of the game, it could have been so much more. the game is largely fine as is.

THE BIG COMPARISON:
better than vanilla sxl, blown out of the water by modded sxl.

tons of physics bugs, no embracement of user created content (so they can push dlc), ugly animations, etc. i understand that creature needs funding, but specifically the dlc stuff is really what turned me away, there are no official avenues for user content. if i were to purchase every map available, it would cost 4 dollars short of the full game's price. buying this game is more of an investment in hopes that they fix what they need to and add more free stuff.
