A cutesy and smaller scale Anno on the topside, with some Dungeon Keeper below the surface down in the mines. Pretty short though.

Talos 2 is inferior in every aspect to the first game and it's not even close. That makes it still alright but a disappointing alright.

It keeps introducing new gimmick mechanics that it tutoralizes you on with baby tier puzzles, and then immediately drops them for a new gimmick with new tutorialization, repeat this cycle about 9 times. A majority of the puzzles ends up being tutorials. It's rare for a puzzle to combine the new mechanics to form a new interesting challenge. A lot of these new gimmicks/tools are interesting but they just don't commit to them.

The hub maps are gigantic with no game speed-up, no auto-sprint and no auto-run so prepare to hold W + shift for about a quarter of the playtime. Moving around the hubs is truly meaningless padding just there to waste your time. Fast-travel is absent in any meaningful way.

Storywise it's baby philosophy orating at you about a false dichotomy between either total colonialist solar system (and beyond?) ecocide or slow societal suicide for about 25 hours.

And if all that wasn't enough it also uses some of the worst annoying graphical "advancements" Unreal 5 has to offer resulting in a blurry, smeary mess of Lumen, Nanite, SSAO & Temporal AA. This while Serious Engine was a more than capable engine making this shift to U5 even more baffling. Merely compare Talos 1 to 2 during actual gameplay i.e. motion, especially at framerates higher than 30 fps it can be nauseating at times to play Talos 2. The future of graphics has never looked worse in this devil's cocktail.

I did like that they didnt just reset the setting and advanced the story from the first game (didnt do anything interesting with it but hey at least they tried). I enjoyed a good chunk of the conversations with my robo pals, giving you that interaction with others that Gehenna just barely touched at.

Excellent game. The ultimate indictment of trying to use the DnD combat ruleset for videogames. Have been trying for 40 years and it has never worked in a satisfying manner. Even Larian can't salvage it with the little margin they got to change it. On top of that it's burdened and dragged down by the legacy of the overrated previous games. One can only imagine what a truly standout once-in-a-generation achievement it would have been without these limitations. Yet despite all this, it is still an excellent game!
