A game changer for VR. An amazing game and true display of the possibility of the platform. Now if only there were more of this caliber...

DotA really is a great game at the core. It is by far the most complex and most balanced game in the genre. Hundreds of heroes with unique and often complex abilities keep the game fresh. Add hundreds of more items that have all kinds of game bending active effects, and well, let's just say I've been playing since the Warcraft III days and it really never gets old. There's constant room for improvement, the competition is andrenaline inducing, it's fun to watch, it's fun to play.

The big caveat and the reason for most of these negative reviews is that the game suffers from the same issues most MOBAs do, in that it's a team game that requires you to spend around 30 minutes to up to over an hour with strangers who's performance will have a heavy impact on your game experience. If you're playing alone, frustration is inevitable unless you've got very thick skin. Playing with friends, frustration is still likely (hah) but you'll probably have a better time and the feeling of working together to beat your enemies really is phenomenal. If DotA was a sport, it'd be volleyball. One player can only do so much. You cannot win alone, you cannot magically make your teammates play better. If you can't deal with that psychologically you should try a different genre. Or just play with friends!

The new player experience is absolutely shameful, and will definitely be the "death" of this game in the long-run. There is very little in-game direction and lots of smurfs. So many mechanics are simply left unstated, and are completely unintuitive. That doesn't mean they're bad mechanics! They make the game interesting. They're just not explained AT ALL in game. New players...I don't know what to tell you other than...don't give up! I've tried to help multiple friends get started with this game and it really is just overwhelming. Most don't make it. I feel lucky because when I started playing 10+ years ago the whole community were just noobs and there was a LOT of room to ♥♥♥♥ around and make mistakes (not that there wasn't flaming...). Now the community collectively has been playing for many years and so the expectations of knowledge are way higher. If you've played a little or watched a little and you're interested, I recommend going to Youtube or googling some information about how to play, it will change the game dramatically for you. Even still, this game will be unintelligible for like, 100+ hours unless you're some brain genius. But on the other side you have a game that will entertain you for...life? Maybe the last multiplayer game you ever play competitively.

Anyways, that got long-winded. All in all, DotA really is a phenomenal game, despite people being ♥♥♥♥♥♥, and the non-existent player experience. If you decide to take the plunge, good luck out there. I'm rooting for you!

This is the first game in a long time where I've been pleasantly surprised over and over again. Things keep happening that make me burst out in a huge grin just because it's so fantastically creative. The writing alone makes it worth 10 bux, but on top of that, the gameplay is very fun, and the soundtrack is great as well. Don't sleep on this game!
