A Generational Masterpiece

Baldur´s Gate 3 is one of those games that makes you question, how something this good can still be made? In an industry that is so focused on extracting every single cent from you whilst at the same time trying to give you the worst gaming experience possible. It trully is a miracle that a game like this can just ♥♥♥♥ all over established studios and show them how its done.

"You can´t expect this level of polish"

Was a phrase uttered by other developers when this game came out. It established a new golden standard. The level of detail this game brings into the RPG genre, which in recent years has been absolutelly gutted and simplified is simply unreal. If you ever played a Telltale game and thought to yourself - "Gee, i wish i could have more than two choices that dont end up at the exact same place anyway" Then this game finally delivers on this fantasy of a trully reactive world.

Character creator is impactful and every little specialization adds additional dialogue and sometimes a whole different approach to an encounter. Similiar to games like new vegas, but here it is even better. As the game utilizes more RPG and RP aspects. The world is extremely reactive to your inputs, like it is actually crazy. Your water spells can extinguish fires, you can freeze the wet surface your water leaves behind, which will get melted if it comes into contact with fire again.

Seems like a fun little simulation, but where this system shines is in the gameplay applications

Trully inovative gameplay

Say you are a wizard that has access to a lightning bolt spell. This specific spell does more damage to wet enemies. But oh no, you dont have access to a create water spell, so i guess you are screwed. But whats that, you have a glass of water in your inventory, you can throw said water at someone, which will drench him in water and then you can shock him.

This little interaction is possible with many more liquids, powders or anything that you can think off. Due to the unique systems and simulations this game offers, you can really have a blast if you think a little out off the box, which this game greatly rewards.

The Story

The story is a really captivating tale that doesn´t fall into the bad RPG trope of a dire time mechanic. What i mean by this is the disconnect between the main quest (that is usually a very urgent matter of world ending proportions) and the side quests (which can sometimes be some silly little adventures). Here the story is crafted in such a way, where those little detours make sense, you are inclined to move along with the story and it raises enough of a mystery for you to be invested in completing it. But it also allows you to make sensible detours and help the poeple around you.

There trully is a lot of quests to do, I´ve finished this game like 7-8 times now and i have still missed a few questlines. Not that they are not worth it, but because i have yet to explore every nuck and cranny this world has to offer. The quest resolution also steps around the tired tropes off bethesda RPG writting, where you have only the bad guy ending and good guy ending. Each quest has at the very least like 3-4 different resolutions with additional little variations depending on the dialogue or even gameplay choices.

You will really be immersed and belive that your choices have actual weight.

Characters

Characters in BG3 are the top echelon of RPG character writting. Almost every character is interesting, even the ones that are unlikable at the start turn out to be very captivating. From the main cast, they are all just perfect... Except maybe for Wyll, who for me is a little boring, but hey some people like him so whatever.

Yes you can have sex with a bear, who also has tragic backstory i guess. Infact you can have sex with a ton off stuff in this game, half of which could be atleast considered human. This game really gives you the ultimate gamer fantasy of having a stable and loving relationship. Did i mention you have have sex with animals.

10/10 game.... Not because you can have sex with animals, thats not what adds to the rating, all the other stuff is good.

A comprehensive critique of Starfield

Starfield is one of those games, that sells you an idea that it damn well knows it cant ever deliver. It has the foundation of something great, however you will quickly come to realize that is all it has. Apart from the very basics of gameplay, everything else feels like a step down from what came before from Bethesda.

Exploration

Exploration has never been more dull, 1000s of planets with hardly any content between them. Exploration works basically like this: you go into a star system, if its one of the main systems, there will usually be a small quest. If its not, it will just be a randomly generated map with a random dungeon, of which, the variety of these dungeons are limited to a Cave, Research station, Barracs or anything in between. I´ve personally done a few of these and can tell you that after like a 4th dungeon, there is no reason to do any more. They look really similiar to the point i actually think some of em repeated. And the reward you get for completing them is some a randomized underwhelming loot.

In previous Bethesda games you could be expecting a new cool unique gun or a cool armor set, but not here. You get those through the quests and exploration is just a little bonus where you find common materials.

Quest design

Quests themselves leave a lot to be desired. People are proping up the UC Vanguard questline in particular, but its really not that great. You geat a binnary choice, that is super basic to the point of straight up asking you, are you a good guy or do you support war crimes? Your reward for making this choice? Completely the same with a little bonus in one ending... thats right, you will get radiant quests as a reward if you choose one of these endings...

If you played any other recent RPGs or even an older bethesda RPG you will notice that choices in this game are way more limiting. Usually quests have only 1-2 ways of completing them, with the other way being just shooting everything up. Which could be enjoyable, but you quickly run into the problem of invincible characters. Yes, in 2023 bethesda still coudlnt implement a quest design that would allow you to kill even minor characters in a one off quest (Yes, even if the character shows up for one second in a quest, if they have a name and the quest doesnt directly ask you to kill them, you will not be able to kill them.) A feature that has already been implemented in 2011 with a game they themselves published (Fallout: New Vegas)

Player choice is severly limited, there are no fun, creative ways to go about a quest, because it just wont allow you to stray from the pre build path. I´ll if you are interested here is an example of a quest that really broke the whole illusion for me (contains minor spoiler for a side plot)

During a quest for the UC SycDef/Crimson Fleet you are tasked with stealling credentals of a banker on a cruise ship, here you meet your man inside, Rokov, who is the ships captain, you also have a side mission from Naeva, the anoying pirate second in command, to steal some award that is worth a lot of money

sounds easy enough a classic dual objective quest on a massive party ship. So how do you go about it? Well... you either shoot the guy in the face and swipe it off of him, or you go back and forward for around 10 minutes between 3 NPCs and winning speech checks. Have fun...

The guards wont even strip you off your weapons, or care that you have combat armor on, or care that you are tresspassing or care that you draw your weapon, no they dont care at all. You can just run around, fish outta water on a ship, where everyone is in a suit and you are in a space suit...

I tried to steal my way through this quest as i was playing a rogue character. And there is a hitch. You cant pickpocket NPCs that are sitting, and guess what, our guy is sitting the whole time. So i turn my sights on the award instead. I ask around and they point me to a lady that is in charge of keeping the award. i ask her where it is, jokingly impying its in her cabin, she tells me its in a safe in a security area.

Now what do you think happens next? Well you can steal her room key, i did, and went into her room, finding nothing but garbage randomized loot, so a waste of time. No what you have to do is pass a Speech check asking her to give you the key to the award (which she a few senteces ago bragged about not having had it stolen for 7 years) You basically tell her, that you dont have all day here and to just give it to you (yes those are the actual things you tell her) and she relents and gives it to you. She didnt have the pass in her inventory, so i couldnt even steal it. and then you go to the safe, steal it while a security guard gives you the mean eye and leave...

This quest in structure is earily similiar to the Gomorrah casino quest in Fallout New Vegas and IYKYK. If you look at these quests they are basically the same with a dual objective, the difference being you can actually utilize your character in multiple way to complete the casino quest. Not in starfield you can either do it the right way or shoot everyone, that is the depth of player choice

Dialogue

Dialogue is another noticable step down, you can sometimes have heartfelt conversations with characters, only to be interupted by literall reddit response. Your dialogue choices are limited, like they were in Fallout 4. Except this time, there is no voiced protagonist. So enjoy, you again can engage in conversations the FUN WAY: by only agreeing, saying no (postponing YES answer), asking a question, or being sarcastic (which unlike fallout 4, is usually some Reddit tier zinger)

Companions

Companion variety is something many people are talking about, not that the 4 main companions are bad, they are actually well written and offer you some good quests, however if you ever want to engage in piracy (a significant gameplay feature) you better not have these companions. They are all good people who will not tolerate any bad actions from you (except for stealling, you can still steal) Which again wouldnt really be that big of a deal if you had some other companions that have a more gray moral compass. One would expect that the crimson fleet could provide you with a set of evil companions and they do! One, which is also missable for most players. The anoying useless pirate mathis, that has no good stats and is overall a bum. Yes, thats the only guy you get...

Which is strange since there are like 3 other pirates that have cool personalities that have no other role in the story apart from being in 2 missions. Why couldnt bethesda make those companions as well? (Rokov, that german guy)

In conclusion

This game would have been great in 2016. In a world where No mans sky showed you what is posible to with exploration, Star Citizen showed you that it is indeed possible to have fun and seamless flying and exploration. It is honestly an insult to the players to ask for 70-100 bucks to play this over priced, over promised skyrim, that even lacks the quality of said game

No more NPC routines, everyone just walks to and from elevators to despawn and respawn (they dont even bother closing the door so you see em despawn) The main quest is by far the worst out of all bethesda games, it literally makes all your choices meaningless. Its just boring and uninspired.

The whole starfield universe is the most boring Sci-fi universe there is... No aliens, tech looks like ♥♥♥♥, the lore is just unoriginal. It is perhaps realistic but that does not make the thing good.

The whole game is just a massive disapointment and if you are looking for a game, that will challenge you with morally gray choices, interesting world to explore, memorable characters, cool weapons and gameplay systems. Then just buy the new Cyberpunk DLC and come back to this game in like 2-3 years when modders actually make the game fun.
